A bell began to ring. Nearly evening now, so it carried on chiming for several long seconds. Twenty whole clashes of mallet on metal, ringing out to the edges of the little town and beyond in a deep, somber tone.

Some old-timers around the tavern looked up at the sound, apparently having nothing better to do over their drinks than to listen to the time. It hadn't even occurred to Ahna until now just how quiet this town really was. Alesworth, was it called? Just the last sort of place you'd expect anything at all to happen, and the last sort of place you'd expect someone of her own boss's repute to organize a crew. Unless a pot of gold was buried right beneath their feet, there wasn't anything here that could convince her was of Master Khangal's note.

Then a horn sounded in the distance in the fading echoes of the chimes: none she had ever heard before. Every head that could hear swiveled to the north where it had come, a once-quiet town turned to complete hush. It called in a sort of jagged, arrogant blast - whatever it signaled, if anything, certainly couldn't be good.

A long, thin shadow cast over her face. Ahna squinted and turned her eyes towards the ever-approaching sunset, barely spotting amid the harsh gleam a banner being hoisted aloft at the head of the village. In this glare she couldn't make out what was on it.

"Halai-aka!" Shouted a distant voice in the old tongue of Drakefell. "Attack!"

And then a roaring of dozens of men once agian drowned out the silence, followed by the thundering of running feet and a clatter of old weapons.

My character has literally no fighting ability whatsoever. this is fine

Eceline panicked at the sound of the bells. Was this some sort of trap? Suddenly very much aware of her bright skin, she began scanning the room for a way out, a place to hide, anything.

"I don't want to interrupt what you're doing, I'm sure I can find my own way around."

"Nonsense, I just finished up a sale, and I don't have anything better to do today..." Itzal cut off as the bells sounded, and glanced towards the oncoming army.

"You might want to stay close to me actually, this could get pretty messy."

Val's eyes widened, partly in fear and partly in excitement. As long as she could stay a safe distance away from the fighting, this would be an invaluable experience to help her understand the conflict between realms.

"I can try, though I make no promises," Itzal said, placing a hand on his sword. "We'll want to find a taller building, if I recognise the commanders, I can probably arange for our safety through the battle, but the extra height will be good for us in the meantime."

"Unsure yet. Boss said he'd meet us here."

"Okay," Crowe said.

He tapped his mug on the edge of the table, idly wondering if her boss was already in the tavern's crowd somewhere.

"My name's Crowe, by the-" he had started to say when he heard the war horn. He was standing in an instant, watching the battle.

"I think we should get moving"

"Right." Val forced herself to look away from the fighting and turn towards Itzal. "Lead the way."

Itzal let out a laugh, and lead Val to the town's belltower. It was probably one of the safer places, as it wouldn't be a high priority target, and unlike grain siloes it couldn't burn. Standing on the ledge he leaned forward trying to catch a glimps of the banner the army flew.

"Ahnalyn." She drew her shortblade, more for the familiar comfort of the hilt than anything. "Belltower."

Can I tell who's army it is?

The banner was deep crimson. No nation's emblem flew on it - instead, the vague form of a curved dagger in pitch black emblazoned the center.

Would I be correct in assuming that this is not one of the main forces and Itzal would have no idea who they are?

Running towards the belltower, Ahnalyn couldn't help but continuously glance back at the charging forces. "We aren't anywhere near the front... those surely can't be demons?"

"Whoever they are," he said catching up with her, "They don't seem very friendly."

He scanned the crowd. "Hey, do you see your boss anywhere?"

"Well Val, they aren't Ivians, and unfortunetly I don't think they're demons either."

*I'm assuming this is a third party, or at least a splinter group.

The stairs up the belltower absolutely killed her calves, but soon enough she'd reached the top. Several others seemed to have had the same idea, including a set of winded-looking elderly folk and... were those sprites? Two sprites, in Drakefell?

"Are you guys okay?" Ahna asked.

Itzal whirled around, his hand instinctively reaching to his sword, as his eyes quickly scanned for potential threats. The speaker was a fey woman, who was followed closely by a shade.

"We're fine thank you. Do you know who this army is, I've never seen them before?" Itzal asked forcing himself to relax.

"The belltower should be defensible. What weapons do you use?"

"I'm good with pretty much anything," he said. Crow pulled out his axe from where it had been slung across his back. He disliked pulling out weapons in large crowds of people. It usually caused a stir.

But at the moment everyone was already pretty scared so it was probably fine.

The bell tower was taller then he expected. From here he could easily see tropes bearing a red banner of some sort. He didn't recognize it.

"Nope. I... I think they're what I would call 'freelance.'"

"Wonderful."

Itzal placed his hand on the stones, feeling the tower. This was a place of knowledge, it was built, crafted to give information. With a rushing sensation Itzal became aware of the entrance, he didn't see it, but the tower itself spoke to him. He would know when the army attempted to enter.

Like where you're going with this - just be careful not to make it too much like Soulcasting

or ReForging

or Progression

or just Shadesmar in general

...

...Sanderson really does have a style.

"I should've brought my bow..." Ahna muttered.

Crowe walked over to some of the other people who had made their way to the tower.

"Has anyone here seen or heard of those people with the red banners?"

He didn't spend very much time on Midway, maybe they belonged to a local war lord.

"Nope." Ahna looked out - they'd almost reached the outskirts of the town. "Should we do something about them?"

"Nothing much that can be done. There aren't any walls or defensive structures, this is going to be an street by street battle, and it's going to be ugly. The best we can do is hole up and make it costly, I have a few weapons that can help us out. If we become a hard enough target, they'll move on and find someone else to deal with. Mercenaries don't have great loyalty, they might try and attack us a few times, but if we can hold out they'll move on to easier targets." Itzal said.
