The mischievous grin came to Lerac's face again. "So. What motivates you?"

Oh. And based on your reaction, I can assume the feeling was mutual. Well, good for the both of you. Bonum knows that boy could use some more love in his life. He told me about his time before coming to the Clinic, and well... it wasn't the best experience. It seems that since he lost Tristan and his home world, he lost some of himself as well.

“I don’t have to put up with this.” Sykel pushed past him. Idiot.

I shouldn’t be having this much fun with her, but I like mean characters. I just do.

"Put up with what? It's an honest question!" Lerac walked after her.

She turned to face him, looking extremely annoyed + -_-. “I’m only here—“ she spoke slowly, stressing each sound— “because my sister won’t be content until she gets herself killed. I’m here to haul what’s left of her back to Basilica.”

"Well, we'll be in here for a while, so you can't ignore me forever. And honestly, I don't know if she'll want to leave with you. You don't both seem like you're on the best of terms. And then there's the romance." He said the last word with a wide grin, glancing over at Haly. "Honestly. It took almost no effort to get them to admit their feelings to each other."

Sykel held up a hand and ticked off her fingers. “Several problems. One. I can ignore you as long as I want. Two, she swore herself to her role a long time ago, so it doesn’t matter WHAT terms we’re on, and three, who cares about romance anymore?”

"Wow, you're the forceful type. I can see why she doesn't like you. And, for who cares about romance... they do. Obviously. What, did you get your heart broken and now you're sworn off of romance for the rest of your life? I've known more than one person who said, that, but they always get over it eventually."

Sykel rolled her eyes. “No, I don’t have some heartbreaking backstory [hand motions and change of voice tone there] like everyone else seems to have.” She shook her head. “It’s a weakness. Evalyn’s weak. I can’t see how any of you could possibly be anything but weak, with those big hearts you all tote around.”

"So you're just... generally opposed to empathy? We people are social by nature. 'Those who don't care for others should be taking time to care for themselves.'" He said the last words in a different tone that implied that they were not his own. "And why do you call her Evalyn, when she calls herself Haly?"

“Why don’t you ask her?” She sighed. “Leiance was chosen as heir and granted the name Evelyn. It’s traditional. I assume she calls herself Haly because her parents used to call her ‘their little halcyon’. Apparently it’s a bird and a description word. Are we done here?”

"Not even remotely. Explain to me: Why do you think that caring about other people is weakness? My father, for one, is the most strong-willed person I know. He's also the most compassionate."

Sykel jerked her chin at TAAron. “He’s in mortal danger. Evalyn would jump off a cliff for him. I rest my case.”

"One might argue that that type of commitment takes much more of a strong will than cutting yourself off from anyone and everyone who tries to approach you." He looked at her intently. "Not caring doesn't make you strong, it makes you a coward."

She gave him her flat stare again. “How very touching. Maybe it hasn’t occurred to you that there are people who don’t care for your philosophy, Sir Professor.”

He stared right back for a few moments, then whipped out a plant with a slender green stem and a small yellow flower atop it. "Want some sour grass? It tastes great."

“I’m sure it does.” She stepped away and pulled a small dagger out of her sleeve to sharpen.

He tsked softly. "So cold and tough. Hardened by years of hardship, until she taught herself that it wasn't worth caring anymore. What a tragedy. You really should try this, though." With careful aim, he stuck the slender stem into her mouth.

She took it with a gesture of defeat. “Hardened? Maybe. You’re a better judge. Hardship? Definitely not. Tragedy? You need to get your story straight.” She took another bite of the grass.

"Sour, isn't it? Just like... your general disposition." His grin kept seeming to get wider. "So, what gave you your little philosophy?"

She palmed it. “Thanks.” Ignoring his question, she turned back to her knife.

"On a scale from 1 to 10, where 1 is terrible, 10 is also terrible, and 5 is really good, what is your favorite color of the alphabet?"

“Ru’n tha’shanon” she muttered. “None of the above.”

"Good answer. If you could go any place, fictional or otherwise, where would you go and why, and who would be the first person you talked to?"
