"I'll argue with you later," she decided.

"Upset?" Cjehu grinned. "I like watching my sis grow up."

TAAron laughed, a little more tension gone. "She probably could have done better than a traumatized scholar with major soul damage, but I'm not complaining."

"Now, see, that's how I know you're a good one. If you really do have all those problems, and she loves you anyway, you really must be amazing."

"Maybe she's just misguided." He sat up slightly in the bed. "I feel a little better now, I think."

"I'm not misguided," she insisted hotly. "You're misguided. I know you're great. Remember giving me Lerasium? Remember trying to keep me out of the tower because you didn't want me dead? Remember coming to find a sequin with me?"

Cjehu was greatly amused.

Cjehu was greatly amused.

"None of those are redeeming qualities. I just cared about you, even then." He narrowed his eyes at her. "I thought you said you were going to argue later."

"Yeah, I was, but then you got all 'I'm not a good person and I'm not worth it' and I just decided you're not allowed to think that way."

He turned to Cjehu, smiling. "She's insufferable, isn't she?"

"She's vehement as ever." He tilted his head mildly. "And she's usually right, so I'd probably listen if I were you."

"I don't know. It still doesn't make sense to me. Nice to meet you, by the way."

"Same to you." He surveyed TAAron critically. "You should be okay now, but you ought to rest for the night. C'mon, Haly, we should get changed."

She nodded and rose.

Almost involuntarily, TAAron began to cry out, "Don't---" He stopped himself. It's fine. You'll be fine.

She hesitated. "I... I have to. It'll only be an hour at most, and Mitis is here if you need anything..." she glanced at where a Mitis was sprawled across one of the beds. "Well, sort of."

She nodded, concern shining from her eyes. "Okay. I love you, too, TAAron."

She left with Cjehu.

She can come back an hour later, or if he's asleep, then in the morning

She brightened. "TAAron! You're up!" She swung down off the light and landed on a bed to his right. "Sleep well?"

"Nope! Not anymore! I gave up my title."

"Now we go kill Malum! And then go back to the clinic! And then we keep killing bad stuff!"

"I might tag along, if you don't mind," Mitis offered.

"Oh." He looked a little unsure about the assertion. "Haly, don't you worry that at some point something's going to happen? I mean, something permanent. Like, you'll die and we won't be able to do anything about it."
