The witch quirked an eyebrow. "Aren't you her mentor? Shouldn't you protect her?"

Arcaene looked around worriedly at the ever increasing dangers of the battlefield. This was getting so weird. And just because Arcaene had wanted to do a routine sacrifice.

The girl called out to her. "So, witch, what was your name again?"

Arcaene called back, as she flipped through pages in her book. "Yeah, we were past that point at the lava." Muttering a quick incantation a portal appeared behind Kealie's neck. A scaled hand shot out towards her throat.

There’s also a wall behind you. Like, right behind you.

Kealie flicked her morningknife (knife at the end of a chain) toward the witch.

The witch muttered another spell and the knife impacted a script circle inches away from Arcaene. It hit the wall of force, dispersing the impact across the circular dome. Arcaene raised her lantern and red flame ran along the barrier, strengthening it.

Arcaene chanted, to the flipping of pages and a large portal grew in front of Kealie. A large ooze crawled out, lurching towards Kealie.

She snapped her again back to her, then leaped to her left, onto the tiny patch of steady ground tat wouldn’t break and dump any small amount of weight into fiery lava.

The ooze, being quite foolish, took no such precautions when crossing the ground. He did not live long.
Arcaene bit off a swear and began another chant. Another rune circle began to appear above Kealie.

She jumped over the large chasm that had opened up in the ground and sent the blade of her morningknife at the barrier again. “Just quit chasing us!” She yelled.

It cracked off the barrier leaving small cracks. The lantern fire ran over the cracks reforging it anew.

The witch sighed. "I'm really going to need that aether stone." She sat down in the middle of the dome and began chanting, pages furiously flipping before her.

“What’s the aether stone?” Kealie called to Vance. “Why does she want it so badly?” She swung at the dome again.

“Oh… did I forget to tell you?”

Vance watched her fight.

”I’ll explain in a few.”

“I’m really not getting anywhere,” Kealie grunted. “Any tips? That shield is unbreakable.”

The witch's chant grew as wisps of smoking red flame began to rise in a circle around her. That was probably fine.

"Tip one: the shield can't last forever. Tip two: it requires a certain amount of focus to maintain."

Hyron kept their hands up, but mentally grew a vine, slowly and quietly, behind the guard, out of sight of anyone else.

"Just.. put the sword down. Let's talk about this." They said, slowly growing the vine behind the guard.

Miyako struggled to focus. Her Shadow was making that harder and harder. But for now, Miyako had control.

She reached and tried to speak to the voice in her mind. "Voice, could I talk to Yerik through you?"

"Certainly," replied the soldier, lowering the sword slightly.

I... could relay messages, perhaps.

"How in Gaea's name would I know?" retorted Annimus.

"I don't even quite know how I did it. I just felt a pulling from the horse and then something clicked and the pulling sensation was gone!"

Anikel humphed again as the trio arrived at the stables. "If you hurt one of mine, you'll pay in blood."

A reminder; what was Quendi's purpose on the exploration again?

So, did either of you two have any idea for the town or what's going to push them towards the others?

As I've been a bit inactive and I can't even remember the name of the town anymore.

They are currently in Pietmed. I don't have plans to meet up with other characters at the moment, although Anikel and Yerik are from the same nation.

"Ok, say this to Yerik: Tides, Acolyte. Keep fighting, your not dead yet. Look for a way out. Could you form a shield around yourself or something?"

A voice echoed in Yerik's head. Can you form a shield around your neck, between yourself and the blade?

Yerik blinked. Of course. Why hadn't he thought of that before?

He projected the shield carefully, making sure it didn't brush the knife and reveal to his captor what was going on.

Badly, replied the voice. Oh! You mean Yerik. He was able to shield himself from the knife, I think- but honestly, that's the least of your worries.

"We didn't mean to kill those we killed, we simply didn't know who they were or what they were. We just knew they were attacking us. And, the whole point of a deal is that it benefits both parties."

Miyako's Shadow could hold back no longer. Honestly, neither could Miyako. Laughing wildly, she launched herself in a powerful leap to the princess.

"But this does benefit you, child," the Queen explained patiently in the soldier's voice. "Since when was I ever first in attacking you? It is you who sought this conflict out. You have burdened yourselves with your own mistakes."

A soldier in red armor rocketed upwards from the floor as Miyako jumped. In the blink of an eye, he intercepted her graceful parabola and slammed her into the ceiling.

What are you doing? screamed the voice in Miyako's ear.
