"...Yes."

"This one's... honestly, I need to fix all these. I'm way out of order." Vance cleared his throat. "So the whole universe as we know it is split up into a number of distinct dimensions. You've got here, the Physical; you've got the Soul realm, where dead people go and such; and a few others in between, like the astral realm and elemental planes. But turns out it's not so simple as Dimension One, Dimension Two, Dimension Three: there's a whole bunch in between."

He stacked his hands on top of each other to demonstrate. "Between one and two you technically have an infinite amount of infinitely tiny planes: perfectly two-dimensional spaces with absolutely no concept of up or down. Billions can coexist on top of each other and never know about their neighbors because of that. Given that, it stands to reason that the same can occur for three-dimensional spaces, like the kind we live in here. They're layered on top of each other in a four-dimensional way, which we can't really comprehend, but can use anyways.

"All you have to do - in theory, anyways - is expand your magical senses to these parallel worlds and kind of tune into them, per say. You then effectively shift which layer you exist on." Vance dropped his hands. "Make sense?"

"Sure. So... How do we do it?"

Miyako stood stunned at Hyron's word and before she could question him he was already gone. Grumbling to herself, Miyako ran into the throne room. She called the water that was left from the attack on Geff and got to work on the soldiers.

Kealie and Eej wouldn’t really be able to sense whether something is alive, but I want to know if there’s anything in the room Kealie can’t change. That’s all.

"There is no difference," insisted the Queen confidently.

"I'm assuming surrender would mean giving up our autonomy?" Miyako said drily.

Sorry, I just enjoy the mystery. Um, I guess the dolls technically have cognitive function? They are not alive per say, but.....have life in a sense.

I’m gonna say she can’t change them then.

Kealie listened to Eej. “Those dolls are suspicious,” she whispered.

"Look around first a bit. Find someplace suspicious. You should be able to feel the lynchpin, but it'll be up to you to distinguish the magical frequency."

"It feels like there's a lot of... Noise around here."

"See if you can break it down at all."

"I don't know... I can barely tell the direction of magic that's a bit away from me. The most I can pick up if I really focus is just this faint general vibration, and I'm not even sure if that's my magic since I've never not had that feeling."

The next morning Whist felt much better, the sun was out. She stood outside the inn they had stayed in last night. The Building was on the outskirts of town and was set on the road that would take them into the countryside. Standing out in the crisp morning air, she pulled from the gentle rays. Even refreshed, it was hard to break old habits. Whist carefully finished loading a pack of supplies onto the pony she had rented. The journey to Caerlon city would only take 3 or 4 days, but it was good to be prepared.

"Lesson number nine: there's no such thing as a controlled environment."

"That may be the case, but the pocket dimension was a lot closer than a house with different magic sources literally lining the walls."

Quest stared at the shelf of dolls. He could swear a few were looking at him. Quest felt a shiver run up his spine.

"Hey, um, Kealie? Would you want to enter first?"

Miyako nodded to herself. She expected as much anyway. Unless the Queen was open to some haggling, her options were pretty narrow. Might as well attack while it was still a bit of a surprise.

Miyako stayed back, standing still in the mist as she commanded her stream to fly in-between a soldier's visor, hopefully taking him out silently.

If they don't have helmets, Miyako commands the stream to slit their throats.

“Okay.” Kealie stepped into the room and got a description from Eej. “Why is this so scary?”

"I'm going to be honest, Your Majesty," Hyron said, sneaking around through the mist, silently strangling any soldiers they came across, "That doesn't sound too fun. I like having my autonomy. Could you explain why it would be better for us to give it to you? Why do you want it so much?"

Hyron was saying all this, hoping to get an answer to their many questions, hoping to find a weakness they could exploit.

The Queen's power ripped at Miyako's stream, trying to tear it apart- or at the very least, deflect it.

"Because this is my island," replied the Queen. "And you attacked me. So you must be punished."
