So I just had a crazy thought that I'll probably turn into a Fanfic one day, could Endowment Smite someone then immediately Return them? And manipulate their Vision so that they'd see only what she wants them to see?

I'm just thinking about if Endowment decides to get involved with the greater Cosmere, this could be one way to do it, with an army or a whole organization of Returned loyal to her, doing her bidding across the Cosmere.

Of course, this probably won't happen but still, I think it's worth thinking about.

There is a theory that she might already be doing something along those lines, full cosmere spoilers

In the stormlight archive we see a letter from Endowment to Hoid, presumably Hoid was asking for her assistance with Odium. She ends her reply with :

Regardless, this is not your concern. You turned your back on divinity. If Rayse becomes an issue, he will be dealt with.

Then in rhythm of war we see that Rayse is in fact dealt with by Nightblood, who was brought to Roshar by Vasher.

So while all very speculative still pretty interesting.

I general I would guess that Endowments MO in these sorts of situations is going to be less like a puppet master, and more like providing useful tools to other shards and agents in the cosmere at opportune moments.

I agree, but as you say it Im trying ot figure out if there is much of a practical difference between that and what Cultivation's been up to.  In both cases they are empowering others for their own Goals, as they see it in the Spiritual Relam Infinity.

I see a difference between them personally. I take Cultivation as much more the puppet master, and has a more defined goal. I think Endowment assisted her in this case, and was more or less hands off after giving the gift. Endowment seems to value her position of neutrality, and I think she justifies her interference by letting the other shards do things themselves, and just providing the means.

I think that a possible, major difference is that Endowment's agents (the Returned) kind of choose their own objectives based on what they glimpse of the future. Endowment decides if someone gets to return from death with a bunch of cool powers, and (presumably) chooses people that have objectives which align with her own. The powers are a standard kit, have no strings attached to Endowment once granted, and the agents make their best efforts at fulfilling whatever it is they found so important to attempt.

Conversely, Cultivation also chooses her own agents but directs their development in specific ways that she thinks will serve her goals (and not necessarily the goals her agents might have). Cultivation seems totally fine imposing objectives on people situated to accomplish what she wants and her gifts are never free.
