You know, I've wondered that very same question. They don't seem to need to actively metabolize anything to get the power, as with Allomancy or Sand Mastery, and it doesn't seem to come from an external source either.

My guess as to their power source is that it's something similar to Kandra Blessings, where the worms they've bonded with grant a small, steady flow of Investiture directly from the Spiritual realm that produce an effect on the Aviar and anything they've Bonded.

Ohh god. I'm stupid. I entirely forgot about the worms! Maybe the pool is invested? I'd say its a shardpool but that planet doesn't have a shard, does it?

How about Arcanum Unbounded? Have you read that?

Spoiler

Quote

The existence of a perpendicularity (which often take the form of pools of concentrated power on the Physical Realm) on a planet is a hallmark of a Shard’s presence. This is what makes First of the Sun so interesting.

The system, nicknamed Drominad, has a remarkable three planets inhabited by fully developed human societies. (There is also a fourth planet in the habitable zone.) This is unique in the cosmere; only the Rosharan system can rival it, and there one of the planets is inhabited solely by Splinters.

All four of these planets have water as a dominant feature. And one of them, the first planet, has a perpendicularity.

Khriss' essay clearly explains that the pool on Patji is a Shardpool (which is weird even to her)

Yup, i've read it, I just forgot that too. Any ideas on how it formed? Maybe Patji/First of the Sun was a sort of staging ground for some previous Shardic interactions that didn't end in complete splintering? Or maybe it was created by Adonalsium. The latter would indicate a particular importance of First of the Sun, as I believe most/all of the other Shardpools were formed as concentrations of a Shard's power.

This is an interesting question, have you read Sixth of the Dusk? If you haven't that would be a good place to start since there is some info on aviaries in that novella. Otherwise I have a couple of thoughts but don't want to accidentally spoil anything for you if you haven't read SotD

I've read it already, but i haven't noticed anything about where they get Investiture from. What are you ideas?
