I have probably my most hairbrained theory ever. And some background is required to understand where my mind went. Bare with me on this.

The Unmade. We know that they were “made then unmade.” We also know that the color red *could* be indicative of “corrupted” investiture (investiture that has been “stolen” or “co-opted” by another shard). Most of the Unmade have an affinity to red.

Odium: we know he has killed at least 4 shards (Dominion, Devotion, Ambition, and Honor {who is irrelevant for this theory}).

Autonomy: she creates “Avatars” that are sentient, sapient, highly invested beings. All shards can do this (Most don’t want to as it seems to leave them temporarily exposed, maybe? Irrelevant).

Theory: the Unmade were once parts (perhaps avatars) of Dominion, Devotion, and Ambition *before* they were Unmade. When Odium killed those shards, he Unmade these beings, corrupting them to be fully under his influence. You notice that a few of the Unmade are rather Ambitious. Whereas some are more Dominating. Even with some invoking Devotion from their prey.

Please wreck this theory in the comments and replies, because I haven’t found anything to say that it most definitely is not this.

(a mixing of two investitures)

So slight correction on definition here, corrupted investiture is not "mixed" but co-opted, meaning one shard stole another's investiture.

As far as I am aware we have no evidence against this theory, so sorry on that one.

Cool theory. We could investigate the possibility if someone gets a chance to ask Brandon something along these lines:

"Did any of the unmade originate outside the Rosharan solar system?"

If the answer is "yes," he's bound to drop a RAFO. If the answer is "no," he might just come out and say that since he might not consider it spoilery/important.

But didn't Devotion and Dominion's powers make the Seons when they were Splintered. Would there be enough power left to create the Unmade. I think the Unmade were beings like the Stormfather that were corrupted.

Well, honor invested thousands of spren and still had power enough for the stormfather. The Seons and Skaze are far less numerous, so what’s to say that devotion and dominion couldn’t have made such a higher being before their splintering? That being said, we do know that Odium has heavily invested into the unmade. Odium’s investiture plus whatever was left of his victims may be enough to make a stormfather-like being.
