My parents read LOTR, Harry Potter and all those books to me (with slight edits here or there for HP) before they let me read them. To keep my childhood more innocent. Since then I've read LOTR on my own 15+ times. Which, for being 17, ain't bad *pats himself on the back*:P

lol. I read most books to myself because my parents had their hands full with my sibling(s).

I love LOTR; it was one of my first fantasy series

Anybody else seen his art? The Tolkien estate recently put it on online display. He was actually an excellent artist!

Um. Well. I'm definitely far from being the biggest Tolkien fan, but I do like LotR. I probably first read it when I was in elementary school, and I read it again a couple of times. I'm currently in the middle of another reread - this time in English (all the other times were in Hebrew...). I read along with a friend of mine, who sends commentary on each chapter. We're currently in the Tom Bombadil chapters.

I didn't read most of the additional books - only the Children of Hurin, the Silmarilion, Beren and Luthien and maybe the Fall of Gondolin? I can't recall.

If I could choose to belong to one of middle earth races it'd be hobbits. They lead such peaceful lives, and they're amazing! Also, your opinion may vary, but I believe no Tolkien imitation ever actually took the good old-fashioned hobbits. They usually take the Tooks and their likeness, maybe.

I read Fellowship and loved it.

Read Two Towers and struggled to understand it and enjoy it. Because of this, I never read Return Of The King.

did see all three movies, and those were good.

I have done nothing else Tolkien.

Yesss another Tolkien fan!

His art was so interesting (compared to Alan Lee's art), but I really liked it.

That's awesome!

I understand what you mean about Two Towers. I promise you though, the Return of the King is much easier to understand and more fast-paced.

Those movies are amazing.

Wait Two Towers is your favorite!? I've never met another person who agreed with me! Well, I guess you're more of a cognitive shadow than a flesh and blood person, but I'll take what I can get. I mean, a cognitive shadow is a person, but not a person in the same sense as a person in the physical realm. I'm going to stop there and not get into deep thoughts on souls and sentience and the value of a life and stuff.

*shrugs* all three of them are my favorite, but it is a close race between Two towers and return of the king on which is my favorite of the three. two towers is just one small step ahead.

Yeah, I would say TT is one step ahead of Fellowship, with Return closely following.

- Who is your favorite character (in all of Tolkien's Middle Earth stories) and why?

Used to be Aragorn when I was a kid; these days I like Faramir and Sam.

For Faramir:

Quote

“'War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.’”

I like Faramir's strong sense of integrity, and duty. For Sam, that guy could be BFFs with Taln.

In the LOTR, Faramir and Sam are probably my favorite characters as well.

I agree about Faramir, and that's my biggest beef with the movies.

I would love to see an interaction between Sam and Taln

Silmarillion or outside, then? :P Honestly, they still take the top place for me even including the entire corpus, though I did enjoy Beorn when he showed up for a bit.

God, yes, I get the whole "Let's make Faramir relatable" urge but I disagree it was the right decision for his character.

They both get it :eyes:

Yeah outside LOTR I would say Turin Turambar from Children of Hurin. Him or Glorfindel.

I absolutely adore LOTR. I've watched all the movies.
Three times.
Each. (Yeah, not sure that that is healthy but lets go with it.)
They were some of my favorite books (until I read Branderson) and are still up there. They are just incredible!! I would say... Gosh this is hard... inside the books, at least, my favorite character would be Legolas?? Maybe? It's actually hard for me to choose... but yes, I also love the Silmarillion and I want to learn Elvish.

noice! Tom Bombadil being Illuvatar and Illuvatar being Tolkien :P

I always thought of Bombadil as Man before the fall.  He names the animals, and is alone not tempted by the Ring.

Love the Lord of the Rings trilogy AND The Hobbit.  Sam just might be my favorite: a common sense hobbit who had the humility to realize the Ring was not for him.  Not that he wasn't tempted!  (Hated what the movies did to Faramir, who was also wise enough to Leave The Bad Thing Alone).  If you're looking for Christian symbols, Sam also stood in for Simon of Cyrene.
