Do Elantrians Have Natural Regeneration?

So, Elantrians’ automatic healing. Does it work as a natural mechanic of their magic system, or is it a function of Elantris boosting their power? Would they be able to survive with the same level of ability as a radiant or a Bloodmaker so long as they had access to the Dor? We know that they can at least regrow their heads, so why was Raoden afraid of being killed at the end of Elantris?

Was he just too far away from Elantris to make his regeneration work?

He was still healing, but slowly. At Elantris, the Elantrians were instantly healed of all their injuries, including the ones in the flames. The only record of an Elantrian's death that we know of, as far as I know, was Galladon's father, and he died from natural causes, and was also depressed. Considering this WoB, I think Elantrians are immortal.

What would allow us to presume that he was aware of all his abilities? He had not been given an introduction or a handbook.
