17S Code of Conduct

Recommended Posts

Conduct

  • Please avoid using overtly sexual aliases, nicknames, or profile pictures. Our community includes minors so inappropriate handles and images are not acceptable and will be subject to immediate removal.
  • Respect that people have differences of opinion and that a discussion is not a competition. Disagreement does not mean silencing nor does it inherently constitute harassment in and of itself. It is okay to agree to disagree and no one is obligated to agree with you.
  • It is every member's responsibility to make this community an enjoyable and comfortable place. Text based messages do not always come across as intended and as our community spans the globe, language barriers can also present further misunderstandings--remember to give people the benefit of the doubt as it is likely the case that they have good intentions.
  • Both public and private harassment is unacceptable. No matter who you are, if you feel you have been or are being harassed, or made uncomfortable by a community member, please contact a staff member either directly or anonymously. Whether you’re a regular contributor or a newcomer, we care about making this community a safe place for you and we’ve got your back.
  • Avoid flirting with offensive or sensitive issues, particularly if they’re off-topic; this can easily lead to unnecessary fights, hurt feelings, and damaged trust. Worse, it can drive people away from the community entirely.
  • Behavior or remarks that are considered inappropriate by staff, whether or not they are listed in the Code of Conduct will be moderated.
  • Spamming, trolling, flaming, baiting, or other attention-stealing behavior is not welcome and will be met with harsh sanctions or immediate bans.
  • Multiple accounts are strictly banned. If you are found to intentionally have duplicate accounts you risk being permanently banned from 17th Shard and its associated sites/Discords.
  • Swearing will be filtered on the forums and automatically deleted on Discord. Intentionally trying to circumnavigate the swear filters in place will lead to moderation. In-world swearing from Brandon novels are fine.
  • Piracy (including but not limited to file sharing, torrents, and linking to illegally uploaded material) will not be tolerated and will be immediately removed and may lead to moderation.

Harassment

Harassment will not be tolerated within the 17th Shard community and we strongly encourage anyone who is or has been harassed by another member, notices that someone else is being harassed, or has any other concerns, to please contact the staff (see Reporting Issues for details). We will respond as promptly as we can.

If the person who is harassing you is a staff member, please approach any moderator you feel comfortable speaking with or submit an anonymous report (however, please note that due to technical limitations, anonymous reports may be viewed by any staff members including any mentioned in the anonymous report. If you wish to avoid this, please speak directly to a moderator or administrator). All reports involving staff will be escalated to the forum administrators (Chaos, firstRainbowRose, and Rubix). If a staff member is involved in harassment investigations, they will not be involved with handling the report.

This code of conduct applies to 17th Shard spaces, but if you are being harassed by a member of the 17th Shard community outside our spaces, we still want to know about it. We will take all good-faith reports of harassment by community members. This includes harassment outside our spaces and harassment that took place at any point in time. The staff reserve the right, at their discretion, to exclude people from the 17th Shard based on their past behavior, including behavior outside 17th Shard spaces and behavior towards people who are not in 17th Shard.

At our discretion, we may publicly name a person about whom we’ve received harassment complaints, or privately warn third parties about them, if we believe that doing so will increase the safety of 17th Shard members or the general public. This will only happen after consultation with any victim/s involved and with their express consent. Additionally, we will not name harassment victims without their consent and confidentiality requests will be respected for the purpose of protecting victims of abuse.

Harassment can include any of the following. This is not an exhaustive list and behavior deemed by the staff to be harassment that is not listed below will still be moderated.

  • Hateful, hurtful, oppressive, or exclusionary remarks, including offensive comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, mental illness, neuro(a)typicality, physical appearance, body size, age, race, or religion.
  • Unwelcome comments regarding a person’s lifestyle choices and practices, including those related to food, health, parenting, drugs, and employment.
  • Deliberate misgendering or misnaming other members.
  • Gratuitous or off-topic sexual images or behavior in spaces where they’re not appropriate.
  • Simulated physical contact (eg, textual descriptions like “*hug*” or “*backrub*”) after a request to stop.
  • Threats of violence against another or against yourself, in order to manipulate another member.
  • Incitement of violence towards any individual, including encouraging a person to commit suicide or to engage in self-harm.
  • Deliberate intimidation.
  • Stalking or following either physically or using an online medium.
  • Using a third party (ie. another member) to continue to intimidate or harass another member.
  • Harassing photography or recording, including logging online activity for harassment purposes.
  • Unwelcome sexual attention. Remember: it’s not just that ‘no means no’ - coerced or reluctant agreement, as well as silence, does not mean yes.
  • Patterns of inappropriate social contact, such as requesting/assuming inappropriate levels of intimacy with others.
  • Continued one-on-one communication after requests to cease.
  • Deliberate revealing personal information of another community member (also known as doxxing) without their consent.
  • Publication of non-harassing private communication without the consent of all involved.

Reporting Issues

Note: The below avenues should be utilized to report any content that breaches this Code of Conduct and for any administrative or mundane changes that need to occur related to the 17th Shard policies.

Reports are handled collectively by the staff and decisions are come to as a collective. To minimize any conscious or unconscious biases, direct messages to those involved in a report are collaboratively drafted, which may delay response times. However, the staff will endeavor to respond as promptly as possible. Please remember that while our staff do span the globe and cover a number of timezones, we are not able to be online at all times due to other life commitments. If a staff member appears online but does not respond, assume the best (that the profile is online but the person is not) and try other moderator staff members.

Moderation investigations and decisions will be conducted privately between the staff and individuals who are directly involved and will, generally, not be apparent to the public. If you are a third party reporting an issue, please know that while we investigate your report, actions may be taken privately and, unless further information is needed, you will not be contacted in response.

In order to protect volunteers from abuse and burnout, we reserve the right to reject any report we believe to have been made in bad faith. Reports intended to silence legitimate criticism may be deleted without response.

Forum Reports

To report on the forums, use the ‘report’ function that can be found at the top of any user post in a topic next to the timestamp. It is appreciated if you can include an overview of your report, particularly if it is related to a long post, as this helps the staff to pinpoint the issue and speed up resolution. The post report feature is the preferred method of reporting for issues on the forums.

Anonymous Reports

If you wish to submit a report anonymously please use our reporting form. Please note that this should not be used for mundane administrative tasks (eg. moving threads, double posts) and is for more serious matters where the reporter does not wish to disclose their identity. Only members of the 17th Shard staff (administrators and selected moderators) will have access to information provided through this channel.

Urgent Action Required

If you believe action is required urgently then please contact an online staff member directly to explain your concerns (Discord is the preferred contact method). If you are unable to get through to a mod through direct messaging or the matter is time sensitive, please use the @staff tagging function in Discord in the relevant channel or #17s for forum related issues.

Consequences
Community members asked to stop any inappropriate or harassing behaviors, publicly or privately, are expected to comply immediately. If a participant engages in harassing behavior, the staff and admin may take any action they deem appropriate. Below are a number of actions that may be taken to address problematic behavior. Note that bans are applicable to all 17th Shard sites and Discords and not applied separately to individual platforms.

  • Temporarily or permanently being added to the forum moderation queue. This would mean all posts on any topic, as well as messages on a forum member’s feed, must be approved by a moderator before they appear publicly.
  • Official warning from staff and request to change behavior. For most mundane actions, staff will warn users of problematic behavior, however, serious offenses may bypass warnings entirely and lead to an immediate ban.
  • Repeat offenses and ignoring official warnings can lead to either a temporary or permanent ban.
  • In particularly heated scenarios, we may temporarily lock a forum topic so that staff can have discussions with those involved, with the hope of reopening the topic. If we are unable to find a way to resolve the conflict or determine that the topic will continue to cause issues we may permanently close a topic.
  • In rare situations, we may place people temporarily into the moderation queue on the forums or mute them on Discord, if there are concerns that issues may be further exacerbated while staff speak to people individually. We will endeavor to be prompt if this is the case.
  • On occasion, if a topic is causing rising frustration and tension or has moved away from its original purpose, staff may intervene to get the topic back on track or remind everybody of the expected conduct of members. Public messages are not aimed at any one individual and instead are meant as a broad reminder to all who come across the conversation.
  • On Discord, users may be muted (either short term to allow a conversation to continue or for a longer period if required), have privileges removed (such as ability to talk in specific channels or voice chats), or banned (temporarily or permanently).

This is not an exhaustive list and only covers a broad overview of the types of consequences that may be applied. Each situation will be treated individually to determine what action, if any, needs to be taken.
