Breaking a Shardblade

Recommended Posts

I am probably the least qualified person on the planet to answer this question but I will anyway and be probably dead wrong. Since shard blades are basically just dead spren (I think or they are just without investiture) then you might be able to if you had a living shardblade but I don't think you would be able to do it with non investiture techniques like dropping a mountain on the blade to try and shatter it. I probably just spouted a ton of crem dung so sorry.

Also with the case of a live spren then I would assume it could reform itself it wasn't blocked by some anti investiture material like aluminum. Anyone know if shard blades can cut aluminum?

I'd be very interested in seeing what aluminum does to sentient investiture like spren.

I wish someone who knew more about this subject would post an answer as I don't think I have don't a very good job in the slightest in saying anything intelligent. I feel like I'm saying herp di deeeereeeer spren derp de invetiture aluminum crem droppings in the gemheart

Shardblades can cut aluminum, though I'm suspicious that there might be something else going on there.

In general, I don't think breaking a sprenblade (the type of shardblade you all seem to be referring to) would really do much. Living sprenblades would likely just return to the cognitive realm then return as a completed blade once more, with the spren just undergoing some degree of discomfort in the process. They can manifest as separate objects, so I'm assuming it doesn't kill them. Dead sprenblades, I'm a little less sure about, but I feel like it might have the effect of returning the investiture forming the blade to the cognitive realm.

Other shardblades? Honorblades, I think would just break. The other type of shardblade we've encountered mainly outside of SA would too, but I can't imagine a force strong enough to do so outside of shards.

WoB that they can do separate objects? I thought they can't, and that's why you can't have a shardbow-and-arrow, only a shardbow or a shardarrow.

I'm fairly certain that there's a WoB that a spren can manifest as separate objects, but wouldn't normally since it would require some complex mental gymnastics and splitting of themselves.

There is at least one example in the text. Syl frequently takes the form of a bunch of leaves blown in the wind. I've posited elsewhere that spren can form multiple objects where those multiple objects form/represent a cohesive, single concept to which the spren is related. In the leaves' case, this represented concept is the breeze carrying the leaves, the leaves being what allows the wind to be observed. For example, she couldn't form a bunch of leaves on the ground or spread around, as they do not collectively represent a concept to which she is related.

A Shardbow and Shardarrow could arguably be considered a single concept pre-firing (barely, and Brandon has said no in the referenced WoB), but post-firing are definitely separate. In the same way, the separate pieces of a broken blade are conceptually distinct, and so as soon as a Sprenblade broke I would expect it to change form (if alive) or dematerialise (if dead) so instantaneously that I would question if it can have counted as broken in the first place.

As stated by @Spoolofwhool, I would expect any other Shardblade to just break, if with great difficulty. What that would do to a artificial sentient Blade (that is tied to a physical form but doesn't form it, and so doesn't control it), I have no idea, but I imagine it isn't pleasant...
