Because grammar. Anyway. It's kind of inspired by Hamilton which at this point will probably not surprise all that many of you.

When your stomach becomes a pit of hell
slimy tentacles rise, spreading infection
through vein and cell until you can’t remember
The plain normalcy of feeling well.

Construct walls, raise the drawbridge
Retreat into your castle of misery
“Like this they can’t hurt me”
Until the loneliness burns and
You’re left on a ledge and just when
There’s nothing left at all -

Thin delicate tendrils pierce the heart,
Spread like a cloak against the freezing winds of the wilderness
Injecting strength into the pulsing bloodstream,
Wrapping the heart in soaring hope
Grounded in solid reality
And so the artist emerges,
Protected, pained, yet free.

Her name's Delightful, she is a poet.

She's got a lot of talent but she doesn't show it.

She likes anime and Lin-Manuel;

She adheres to Judaism and is really quite swell.

Really? What gave you that impression?

It's not like I've spent the last couple hours watching Lin-Manuel interviews or anything.......

Well I finished listening through Hamilton for the first time about two weeks ago, so since then. Between the lyrics and the music and the characters and story, and how insanely passionate and consistent Lin-Manuel is with his art at a time I'm getting back into my writing.......I'm pretty firmly obsessed.

I am singularly unqualified to comment on this. Not only do I not really *get* poetry, I know nothing of Hamilton.

Seriously. I haven't read anything about it, or heard the much-vaunted soundtrack. So I honestly worry I'm way off the mark with this.

Anyhow, my main takeaway from this is the feeling of solitude. You draw attention to it in the middle verse, but I didn't think that the third one implied there was a change in that state. Rather, it feels like...

At the beginning, it feels like the solitude is toxic, thanks o the imagery if tentacles. Vein's ands cells actually sort of summoning cancerous imagery, as if depression is a tumor spreading through the body. Images of security -like castle walls and drawbridges- become a self-imposed purgatory, leading to suicidal thoughts of standing on the ledge.

My immediate reaction to the third verse is that something has pierced the veil of depression. You refer to the artist, singular, so the solitude hasn't been lifted... but the toxic imagery you started with is replaced with comfort and hope, generally uplifting.

...the reason I say immediate is because I like contrary interpretations; it makes me feel smart. And I have to wonder if the 'tendrils piecing the heart' is a continuation of the tentacles from the first verse, if the artist might be free because they've left the ledge ad are now in free fall...

... if I knew anything about Hamilton, I'd probably be more helpful. Sorry.

Tbh it's more based on the feeling Hamilton gave me so no knowledge is really required.

Your free fall interpretation is pretty cool. :)

I'm honestly unconvinced you could offend if you tried.

And even so, there are always boots ;)
