  1.

Solid book.  My first reaction was that I'm glad we won't have too long of a wait for the next book.  I think there were flaws, but going back over some of them, I can appreciate them a little more.  For example:

Interludes: In general I find them annoying since I want to get back to the main story.  I like Eshonai and Taravangian's however.  Lift's was too long, but going back, I liked her more.  She was funny, especially calling her spren a voidbringer and breaking in to places to eat their dinner.  I'm glad she will have a larger role.  I like Rysn, and I assume we'll see more of her, but it was a little too long.

I love the interludes, but I do skip some of them (when they are not part of the main story) and come back to read them after finishing the rest of the book

They have an interesting effect on the book, and I love how many of them are short stories that are (almost) unrelated the the storyline.

On the way home tonight I played the "Lift" interlude for my wife, and now she is planning on reading Way of Kings! ;)

  2. Does tomorrow (or next week) feel like an election night for those of you that work for "Camp Sanderson"?

I'm imagining a long night waiting on sales information coming in from different markets to find out if it will hit bestseller, and waiting on reviews and the public reaction.

I'm imagining cheering and hugging as reports come in as sales open up in different time zones!

Or, is it more like a normal work week planing the next signing and continuing to work on the next books?

  3. It's released on the same date.

I've been a member of audible since 2005 and when they show a release date you can download the book once the release date arrives.

The only problem I've had is that it's not normally a midnight EST download. I have not checked in a couple years, so I hope they have changed that, but either way I'm not going to start listening until I wake up in the morning.

If I start my download at midnight I'll be up all night listening! :)

  4. Hahahahahaha, NO

    That was awesome...

Anyway, I wanted to post some comments by Lopen from the chapter 12 excerpt. This could just be from Lopen trying to talk Kaladin into trying to fly again. I could be wrong, but I don't take this as any king of flying proof.

"Fly!" Lopen said from down the passage.

"I can't fly," Kaladin said dryly.

    "Walk on walls!"

"I tried that," Kaladin said. "I nearly broke my head from the fall."

"Ah, gancho," Lopen said. "No flying or walking on walls? I need to impress the women. I do not think sticking rocks to walls will be enough."

“I think anyone would find that impressive,” Sigzil said. “It defies the laws of nature.”

“You do not know many Herdazian women, do you?” Lopen asked, sighing.

Edit: Spoiler tags are currently broken on the site.

    Edit Again: It's working now...

  5. Brandon has never hit #1 on the adult hardcover fiction list for a solo book. So a strict release date really does matter.

I didn't realize that was why release dates were so strictly enforced... good to know.

I guess I should purchase all three copies I'm buying (audio + hardback for me, and hardback for my son.) release week then :)

  6. I was wondering in the back of my mind if it was a warning about something else - for example the assassin in white. This does seem to confirm that the countdown is for the beginning of the final desolation.

Szeth could arrive anytime at all, even in chapter 13.

  7. I went back and reread chapter 1 of WoK.

Those who can fight well end up getting sent to the Shattered Plains to battle the Parshendi. Kaladin’s trying to get us into shape to go there, to fight for the king.

The real soldiers are all gone, Cenn thought. Off fighting in a real battle at the Shattered Plains. No wonder Kaladin wants to get his squad there.

That does make how they used the kids more understandable. It's still a stupid way to do things, but he might not have been given a choice.

“With so many wounded on the field, how can we think that the runners’ll come for us?”

“Squadleader Kaladin bribes them,” Dallet said. “They usually only carry off lighteyes, but there are more runners than there are wounded lighteyes. The squadleader puts most of his pay into the bribes.”

I wonder how much control Amaram has over things like that.
  8. What bothers me most about Amaram isn't what he did to Kaladin.

It's the polices of his army.

    1) Medics normally leave dark eyes on the field without even bothering to attempt to keep them alive.

    2) It's standard practice to put the untrained in front to slow the charge - even with the horrendous losses this causes.

For all we know he has been fighting to stop both of these for years... but they bother me far more than what he did to Kaladin.

I want to know more about what is going on, but things are looking really bad at this point.

  9. (1) Which version(s) of the book will you be buying?

I have the audible.com version preordered. I will also purchase a signed hardback copy from brandonsanderson.com when they are available.

    ===========================================

    (2) Which version do you prefer?

    Audio.

I prefer audio for two reasons.

    1) I love reading a thick hardback, but I've found that I miss a lot when I read a book. I don't know if this is a normal problem, but it is a problem for me. I don't read "word by word". I basically I skip sections without even realizing it. With an audobook I don't skip ahead, so I will not miss anything.

    2) I can do other things while listening to an audiobook. Depending on the work i'm doing at the time I can even work while listening to an audobook.

Sidenote: If I read WOR as a hardback I will finish it in 1 or 2 days (even if I get no sleep). Listening to it as an audiobook will give me about a week to savor the book in. 48.5 hours of entertainment! :)

EIther way - there is no "wrong" way to enjoy a Brandon Sanderson book!

  10. Yeah about that think like this, the Alenthi society, a very Militar Nation, discover that the parshman are potential bringers of the Apocalipse and that only way that their can survive it's send they away, what they will do ? Send away Thousands or millions of enemies that are still docile but hat later could turn violent ?

I think that they would kill the parshmen out of fear and a in the must inhuman way, like mass burnig o something like this.

This is a very Alenthi thing(kill first ask question later.....) i believe.

I think everyone is wrong about this...

The are expensive - but dangerous - property. Sell to a kingdom you don't like would be the plan :)

  11. It may be appropriate to bring this quote back to people's attentions:

This is the best part - because we don't know when the quote is from ( early or late in the book - before or after Kaladin and Amaram meet ) it doesn't prove anything either way. It's going to be interesting to find out!

How will I ever make it to March 4th? I'll try to concentrate on this thought - "February is the shortest month!"

  12. Amaram seemed to be allied with Galivar before his death, somehow I don't think Amaram changed sides, for the duel to happen that way, but then again, there's still time for that in this book.

He is a Highmarshal in service of Sadeas, and that strongly suggests that he is on the other side.

As for being allied with Galivar... So is Sadeas. All 10 Highprinces were allied with Galavar. In one of Kaladin's flashbacks we see him thinking something along the lines of "All the honorable highprinces like Sadeas and Dalinar are on the shattered planes completing the vengeance pact."

    What do we actually know?

    1) We know that he felt guilty about what he did to Kaladin.

    2) We know that he still betrayed Kaladin, even though he knew it was wrong.

    3) We know that he is coming.

    4) We know that he kept what Kaladin did a secret.

    What we don't know:

    1) What Amaram is really feeling:

    • Torn with guilt, regretting everything he did --- OR --- Doesn't even think about it.
    • Was he truly convinced by his advisers that betraying Kaladin was for the greater good? --- OR --- Was it an open excuse?

    2) What does he think about Sadeas?

    3) What does he think about Dalinar?

    4) What do they think about Amaram?

    5) How closely is he bound to Sadeas?

    5) Does Amaram even know about the split?

One of the things that makes Brandon Sanderson so interesting is that we don't really know what will happen yet. So much can happen in so many different ways.

That said - I still would like to see Kaladin challenge him and take the shards back.

No one other shardbearer would have any reason to fear anyone that isn't a shardbearer in a duel. If Kaladin accuses Amaram of killing his squad and stealing his shards, and then challenges Amaram to a duel then Amaram will have no choice but to accept. Refusing the duel will prove Kaladin's accusations true. Accepting his challenge will give Kaladin a chance to prove that he was really the one to kill the shardbearer.

From chapter 5 of Words of Radiance, we already know that Dalanar is planning on disarming the highlords by having Adolin challenge them to matches with shards as a prize.

After a few matches people will stop accepting challenges. I think that when Amaram arrives he will be one of the few shardbearers that Sadeas has control over and Adolin will be unable to get him to accept a challenge.

Kaladin is the perfect solution to that problem. There is even a chance for Kaladin to have some closure and growth by getting the shards back (closure) and allowing Amaram to survive the duel (growth).
