  1. But Jezrien's Honorblade is plain, too, and he's the Herald of Kings, so one would assume he would get a fancy blade. Kaladin even makes note of it:

"What about this? he asked, looking over the thin, silvery weapon. An unornamented Blade. That was supposed to be odd.

    WoR p. 1044

So maybe Honorblades can change shape? Though the "works of art" description in the prelude was from before Jezrien had added his Blade to the circle, so I suppose those two Blades could be outliers...

  2. One thing I've noticed that I don't think has been mentioned is that everyone says "hum," rather than "huh" or "hmm" when they're distractedly responding to someone. When I was first reading Mistborn, I thought it was unique to Elend, and it was a cool character thing, but then I realized that everyone said it and I had only noticed it in Elend because he zones out more often than anyone else. It drove me nuts for a while, but I'm getting used to it now.

  3. The pious/guiding Orders of Radiants are the Windrunners and Skybreakers.

    ---

We already Know all 3 Oaths for the Windrunners, so it's not one of theirs.

We also know that Szeth is a Skybreaker (and a VERY good one, as far as Oaths go), so in order for this 'light in the darkness' Oath to belong to the skybreakers, he would have to fit it.

I'm not really seeing that. maybe truthwatchers, probably not. My thought was that Skybreakers exemplify Law: the letter of the law.

    ------------

Overall, the oath seems very general. "light" can be interpreted in innumerable ways, and does not demand specific action. "I will protect those who cannot defend themselves", does  demand specific action.

    -------------

(If you want my source on which orders were the "pious" ones, I can provide a large table that answers this for ALL of the orders of radiants)

Actually, Bondsmiths are the Pious/Binding Order, associated with Ishar (the charts in the Ars Arcana of WOR and TWoK list the "divine attributes" associated with each herald).

Order #5 is the Truthwatchers, Order #8 is the Willshapers, Order #10 is the Bondsmiths.

    Source

Also, each KR order has five Ideals, not three:

"The four later Ideals were said to be different for every order of Radiants. But the First Ideal was the same for each of the ten: Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination."

    -TWoK hardcover p. 831

I do agree though that Skybreakers, even those not corrupted by Nale, are probably occupied with the letter of the law.

  4. From the Wiki:

A "good" person, someone who wouldn't want to use Nightblood for evil purposes, feels sick in Nightblood's vicinity. This sensation of nausea is suppressed if the user has drawn Nightblood and had his or her breath drained. It is of note that Szeth makes no mention of any sensation of nausea or lust for the sword upon encountering Nightblood.

So the question is why does Szeth not feel sick.  I think if he's a coward and a follower he would act just like the people that would grab Nightblood when Vashar would throw him into the middle of a group of 'bad' people and the sword would compel the person who grabbed it to kill everyone then the wielder..

    I dunno.

Vasher doesn't seem affected by Nightblood, either. I think I saw a WOB somewhere that said you could bond Nightblood, but I couldn't find it, so I'm not sure anymore. Regardless, though, there is precedent for Nightblood not forcing someone to either vomit or kill indiscriminately.

  5. Zahel. Go reread the scene in Warbreaker where he explains BioChroma in very scholarly terms and tell me it couldn't happen. This would have the side benefit of exposing Jasnah to worldhopping, which I would be very okay with.

I think Sigzil is also a possibility, but Szeth is doubtful, at least in the immediate future. He's pretty crazy right now, and I think he's need to deal with that before getting romantically involved with anyone.

  6. The scar is mentioned in that quote as being on his jaw and Tozbek is Thaylen, whereas Darkness is described thusly:

A man stood before him, wearing a crisp black and silver uniform. He had dark brown skin like a man from the Makabaki region, but had a pale mark on his right cheek in the shape of a small hooked crescent.

    WOR p. 1062

So probably not the same person. Also, Darkness never seems to express much emotion about anything, but Tozbek seems to have a normal emotional range.

  7. How does Valam being the highprince of house Davar house give Shallan's family any claim to the throne? Shallan is not blood related to him.

I'm not sure what the justification for it was, but she and her brothers did think in WOK that the Ghostbloods were backing their father for highprince. I doubt they would have done that if there was little to no chance of it working. Of course, they still might not have had a blood claim, just enough soldiers/money/allies to win a succession war.

  8. The one thing in Steelheart that broke immersion for me was when the character with the southern accent (only read it once, so I forgot his name) used "y'all" to refer to a single person. I've lived in Georgia my whole life, and while I try not to use it, I know plenty of people who do, and hearing it used as "you" singular and plural drove me nuts. I mean... it has "all" in the word... it should be kinda obvious it's plural...

  9. I think it is more important that it is described as a LEATHER bandolier. Where would you get leather on a world with no cows?

    They use hogshide for leather:

Adolin twisted on of his hogshide reins around his finger while he sat astride his horse, awaiting the next batch of scout reports.

    WOK hardback, page 190

It's never said where the hogs are from though, iirc. I always assumed Shinovar, like horses and chickens.

  10. Given Kaladin's history of trying desperately to protect everyone, particularly younger people (see Cenn, the kid in the bridge crews whose death drives Kaladin to near-suicide, even Renarin and Dunny to an extent), I highly doubt he'd hate a kid (who couldn't be older than like 5) because of who his parents are. I do see him being mad at Laral, possibly, though him wanting to rescue her from her betrothal the last time he saw her would indicate that that is also somewhat unlikely.

One thing that I am really worried about, though, is that no one will believe it's actually Kaladin. They haven't seen him since he was 15, and he's now a lighteyed shardbearer with slave brands. Who can fly. And his eyes aren't even just a lighter version of the color they were before, they changed from dark brown to really light blue. Amaram didn't recognize Kaladin when he was less changed in appearance AND he had seen him more recently. I mean, Amaram didn't know Kaladin as well as the people in Hearthstone, but still... I feel like it's plausible. And exactly the kind of heart-wrenching thing that Brandon would love to make poor Kal suffer through. :(

  11. Great point, I never thought much about Kaladin Breating in Stormlight. I think it's just a similarity of the Cosmere though. From what I've read, all forms of Investature are absorbed through the mouth. There's Breath, Stormlight isn't just absorbed into your body, it has to be Breathed in, and metals from Mistborn are eaten.

    Even

Lift, who doesn't have to absorb Stormlight directly can only make Stormlight by ingesting food

I wonder if this is going to be more significant in the future, or just a little fun fact and common rule of the Cosmere.

What about the Dor? Unless the Shaod strikes by being eaten/inhaled somehow, this would break the pattern. And Forging seems to have nothing to do with eating/breathing.

  12. When you watch Avengers and think of the Iron Man suit as Shardplate. But then you realize that Sadeas is the one with red Shardplate and want to cry.

When your astronomy notes on gravity and pressure in star formation devolve are in terms of Lashings.

When you try to use these notes to study for a test, and drift off for ten minutes remembering all the awesome Windrunnung moments in WOR.

When you can't use the word "awesome" without thinking of Lift.

When you get mad at Words with Friends because it doesn't accept "skaa," "spren," or "crem" as words.

  13. Man, yesterday I was Mistborn. Now I doubt I'm even sentient. I do like the new variety of titles, though! Just need one more upvote to be a person again...  :)

Edit: Yes! I have moved up in the world.

  14. She could just have it for carrying spheres. Controlling the Shadesmar beads seems to require Stormlight, so she would want to have a lot with her. And spheres are roughly the same size/shape as old bullets... I know nothing about guns, though, and actually didn't know what a bandolier was until you defined it, so my opinion is far from definitive.  :)

  15. For 'naming convention' I meant calling a lord by his family name and other member by their given name (ex: in ASOIAF, Ned is 'Lord Stark' and his son Robb just 'Lord Robb') and kings are - and were in history - called by their names. Think Queen Elizabeth.

And Dalinar has the same names as the king, so IMO is because of that, and because everyone knows who 'Dalinar the Blackthorn' is.

    (emphasis mine)

I think this is it. House Kholin has two branches, the royal line and the line that rules the Kholin princedom. So Dalinar is referred to by his first name to distinguish him from the king.

Also, Gavilar was Highprince Kholin for quite a while (not sure when exactly the reunification war was, but I got the impression that it wasn't too long before Gavilar's assassination, maybe like 10 years before that?). So Dalinar would just have been Dalinar the Blackthorn, rather than THE Highprince Kholin, so most of the highprinces were used to calling him Dalinar from before he became highprince, and just stuck with that.

  16. Not necessarily. I mean, he talks about the jobs of the various Heralds, which is something any of them would know, and he has a lot of internal monologue about being tortured in Damnation, but that's again something all of the Heralds have experienced, albeit not as recently as Taln. The whole "needing to implant memories" thing is really only a problem if fake-Taln isn't a Herald themself, which is part of why I like the idea of it being Jezrien.

  17. We have WOB that Hoid didn't switch the Blades, but do we have any reason to think he didn't switch the person? Maybe Hoid found a delusional Jezrien and switched him for Taln? Though why he would do this is something of a mystery... I do like the theory that the person in the monastery is Jezrien if it isn't Taln, though.
