Junction, Junction, what's your Function? (Spoilers Galore)
Goatborn replied to Mistdork's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I've seen a few recent posts saying that Raoden was on Roshar, but I have no idea where this sprung from. One implied that he was the third man in the Purelake interlude of WoK, but that was debunked ages ago by WoB stating that he was from an unpublished work (As far as I recall, anyway). It also wouldn't fit with Worldhopping trends - it never seems to be the main character of a novel that crosses to Roshar. Demoux, Galladon and Vasher are confirmed, but not Spook, Raoden or the princesses of Warbreaker. (I'm upgrading Spook to main character since he had a huge role in Scadrial's history). Back to the main topic, but Honor's Perpendicularity sounds like a Cryptic city to me. If you imagine a 3D structure made up of all right-angles, I think that would be something that Pattern would be interested in or at least find comforting. I also like the idea that cities would crop up around permanent junctions (either due to resources or to keep human/spren interactions in check.) I doubt that Aviar could draw someone to the Cognitive realm, just due to the limited cognition displayed. Seons on the other hand display remarkable intelligence and if they had access to a power source could possibly make the leap. I'm very interested to see how the Shadesmar develops!- 16 replies

I like your thinking, and it holds up logically (I do love a good logical theory). I think the flip side is that characters within a world don't always have a 100% understanding of what is happening in their world. What the Horneaters see as death could be a transportation/ascension effect. Horneaters might have no Investiture and hence are sort of grounded out when it comes to interacting with the pools. The other example of people "dying" in a shardpool is the Elantrians and their sapphire pool, which acts as a release/disintegration with unknown consequences. The big question is whether they have worldhopping potential (instead of death), so there could be a whole heap of Rosharan humans out in the Cosmere confused as Hell. If the pools are actually harmful, I think it would be the opposing investiture rule that governs it. I can understand Ruin's nature making his pool harmful to anyone who walks by, but Preservation or Cultivation's pools being indiscriminately harmful? I don't really buy that. I would love to know what makes the Horneaters immune to the emerald effects. Rock certainly wasn't immune to Kal's surgebinding. Sixth of Dusk was also able to wade into the orange pool, along with a human who hadn't spent long on the Pantheon. Long story short: I concur!

Adapting Brandon's Work to other Media
Goatborn replied to Wyndrunner's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I think that the different classes of KR would lend themselves well to a game! Having a limit of 2 surges at any one time limits the amount of buttons/keys needed to swap between. I think Stormlight Archive would be much easier in this way than designing and mapping a Mistborn character! I disagree on the overall structure you've proposed, though. I think that with an amazing world like Roshar, I'd want to play as an original character, who I can shape on their way to becoming Radiant. Imagine if your actions actually dictated your options of which KR Order you end up in? Like, kill this character and Skybreaker is easier to attain, but you've also weakened your bond to Windrunners... What if you had to uphold your ideals or risk your powers' effectiveness dropping? I'm picturing more of an open world game here, but your structure works well in the Force Unleashed vein of things - Szeth prologue instead of a Darth Vader prologue would serve to introduce you to your abilities and get you pumped! I think Mistborn would function best as a TV show, like Game of Thrones with more casual use of powers thrown in. (I can't stand someone having a superpower, then not using it for 90% of their life. The movie Jumper, flawed as it was, showed this perfectly - if you can teleport, why would you ever use a door again?) -
I first set eyes on The Final Empire when I asked a book store worker (is there a word for that job?) for a recommendation in the fantasy area. She suggested either TFE or Peter Brett's The Painted Man. I must confess that I was weak and chose to try out Brett first. After reading (and being a little disturbed by) The Painted Man, I ended up back at the store and kept getting drawn back to the book with "What if the Dark Lord won?" on the front cover. After that, I absolutely devoured Mistborn, moving on to Elantris and Warbreaker, then picking up TWoK soon after. Little did I know that I was making my way across the cosmere! Then, I found this forum about six months before WoR came out. There's no going back! I've got about 3 people currently diving in to Sanderson's works. I can't wait to jump them with the Cosmere... when they're ready...

He has a shardblade! I've had my profile picture since I signed up to the forum, and I did not put it together until now. He might even be a proper Knight Radiant - he speaks an ideal/reaches a personal realisation, then summons a blade and goes all Skybreaker on everyone! His oath moments are centred around either love or self-actualisation, generally in the context of relationships, so he might be the opposite of a Skybreaker. Maybe a Truthwatcher, since he spends so much of the story completely misguided about his own importance/effect on others, then gains his stormlight (coin?) processing abilities when he begins to approach a very important truth... I don't think there's any spoilers in there, but I'm used to posting in the Cosmere forums, so let me know if there's anything amiss.

But Nightmaws rely very heavily on their mind-sense. If they didn't have it from birth, then they'd have a hard time tracking and killing enough to accumulate enough worms to psychic up. It's not outside the realm of possibility, but it doesn't really fit in my mind. I think it's more likely that they've developed/evolved over the years to gain this ability, while augmented by shardic influence, I don't think the worms are directly involved in every nightmaw. I'm trying to picture a nurturing environment in which a young mind-blind nightmaw is coaxed by it's mother to eat a wounded Aviar. Now that I think about it, it's not so crazy, but I personally lean towards convergent evolution being in play here in terms of most animals having mind-sensing abilities. Edit: And Argent just said it far more eloquently.

I'm very hesitant around shardpools - the impression I've gotten from WoB is that we're all facing the wrong direction on these. The community named them "shardpools," not Sanderson, so I'm tying my damnedest to come up with another interpretation. This story marks the biggest exposure to a 'pool that we've seen since Elantris, so I'm convinced that there's a clue or two in there for us to find. I'm going to let it roll around in my head before going back for another read through. I thought Dusk eating some of the fruit was going to lead to a power up moment, but of course someone would have tried it over the years. It's interesting that the effects only seem to transfer to humans. Would the other life on Patji gain abilities if an Aviar landed on them? I agree, but Harmony and non-intervention Prime Directives seem to go hand in hand. It's got to be a red herring! (And would be very much answered by a timeline...)

Have we considered that First of the Sun's Shard/Splinter/Investiture source might not be held by a human/Yolish entity? With all the creatures on Patji having some kind of mental aspect, is that enough for one of them to pick up a shard? We know that shards can be influenced by the person picking them up, at least initially, until the shard's intent overwhelms the bearer. So if the shard was picked up by one of the death- or night- critters, that could produce a world with increased hostility towards life, but with a shard's intent showing through in the long run, like the outcome of preparing the inhabitants of this world for a higher form of conflict. Also, I'm not on the Scadrian gravy train - it does sound a bit more like a far future coalition of worlds to me. The combination of fabrials and possible Scadrian magic ("dead" emissary as people have mentioned) indicates that we could have multiple investitures working together. Or we have a race that developed on a world untouched by Odium or Ruin. A world without conflict, so the inhabitants didn't have the Dark Ages implied by the Final Empire and every damnation Desolation out! Scadrian tech was intentionally hampered for at least 1000 years, and it would have taken a while before Ruin and Preservation would have been able to work together. And Roshar tech was explicitly reset every time that a Desolation occurred, to the point that the Heralds were teaching them how to rework bronze every time. So I posit that there could be a hyper advanced race out there with lasers and awesomeness, and a bit of a superiority complex - imagine rolling around the Cosmere finding only worlds that were literally Stone Age, while you've got a hologram reminding you that your artificial gravity is awesome. These guys could also have beamed up Demoux or otherwise influenced the 17th Shard... (Sort of ranty post, but Dusk has been rolling around in my head all week.)

Navani a Skybreaker theory, warning spoilers
Goatborn replied to bobsaveg's topic in Stormlight Archive
Skybreakers are sounding more and more like lawyers in this discussion, which sounds pretty Sanderson to me - take a concept, make it sound as war-like and macho as possible, then reveal (without contradicting the previous evidence) that they were mostly scientists and lawyers. The name Skybreakers could be interpreted as fabrial constructors that defy conventional physics. (As well as having the shock and awe side of things for when they have to hunt someone down) What if the idea of justice and laws extended beyond the laws of man and lead to a deeper understanding of the laws of the universe? If you had devoted your life to justice, wouldn't you at least wonder if there was a higher or even universal law? I like the idea of Navani being a Skybreaker. And if you're worried about her being squeamish when it comes to execution, remember that she did raise Jasnah! -
I did a quick search to see if this has come up, and couldn't find anything directly... My questions and thoughts have turned toward the restrictions on Syl and Kaladin's bond - it won't function, to the point of killing Syl, if Kaladin refuses to protect someone/decides to outright murder a fool. I'm wondering if a similar restriction exists upon Skybreakers. Does their bond degrade when they decide to NOT kill? If they find someone guilty, do they have to kill, or is there a choice within their bond to stay execution? I know that the question of "Were those REAL Skybreakers in WoR?" will come up at some point, but I'm thinking of what we know of the Skybreaker Radiants, while considering all the data available. (So no getting too bogged down) What do you think?

Is the metal focus a hint? Is it possible that Threnody was Preservation's first shot at creating a world? Having people linger in a twisted form smacks of rampant Preservation - Without Ruin, Preservation would overdo life and lose control at some point. Hence, shades lingering long past their use-by dates. The Simple Rules could reflect his attempts at magic systems (tenuous links ahoy!) - Fire/burning metals. Bloodshed/hemalurgy. Walk-don't-run could reflect the conservation of energy found in feruchemy. Since hemalurgy is of Ruin, I might simply place bloodshed as the opposite of Preservation's intent. On an unrelated note, my reading of Silence made the withering sound a lot like a shardblade hit. A non-functioning, lifeless limb that occurs rapidly. I'm not saying they're from the same source, but realmatically, they might function the same?

But the God King has a stonkingly great amount of Breath, so much so to be obvious to anyone. The cover art isn't generally taken as canon; at least I don't. I wonder if the God King could use Vasher's knowledge/the innate or intuitive Breath-use to bestow a fraction of his power onto Siri?

I don't see that as a stretch! The dichotomy of the boons vs curses makes me think that most of what the Nightwatcher dishes out could be counted as ironic. Like Taravangian having the ability to stop the Desolation, but loses his wits. So, if Dalinar's wife was the one who injured him or was otherwise tied to his injuries, then the Nightwatcher might take memories of her to tantalize Dalinar with not knowing why he was injured. I must admit that I've always seen the memory wipe as his boon, like one would probably want to erase a past relationship in the heat of the moment (That's not the answer - learn from them!) I think that view is contradicted in the books when Dalinar ponders the situation... Do we know if Dalinar even knows what his boon was?

I'm not sure that all orders will have Plate - there's still so much we don't know about how Shardplate comes into existence. But the fact that Jasnah mentions a large portion of Radiants were scholars/public servants would tend me toward there being Plateless orders. Although, unless an order's bond was centered around pacifism, there would always be unusual Radiants that would use peaceful powers to attack.

They are the Unmade that people refer to. I'm still hazy on what makes them Unmade (see what I did there?) so someone else will have to follow up if you've got questions about them!

This conversation has been split across a few different threads, and most of what you're saying has been put forward (So you know you might maybe possibly be on the right track!) I think Dalinar's bond with the Stormfather can be seen as his visions - developed over years, with an eventual dialogue between the two. A Bondsmith being able to manipulate the bonds between humans and spren is widely accepted, so most of the question is as you mentioned about how quickly they can advance a bond/cripple one. Another widely accepted theory is that Cultivation is another Bondsmith spren, but alas! The groundswell here is firmly in the court of a third spren not being related to Odium. I would always welcome another of the 17th Shard who backs the theory that there's a bondable Odium godspren out there!

But what would be the point of Skybreakers? There described in a WoB as being the MPs of the Radiants. Unless they were to bring them in to Urithiru alive so the Bondsmiths could get to work. Also, in one of Dalinar's WoK visions, he fends off some creepy monster types and is rescued by a couple of Radiants who then invite him to basically "try out" for Radiantness. Someone mentioned that the Bondsmiths might be able to influence who receives a spren partner through their bonds with godspren, but regardless of how it is achieved, I think the Bondsmiths have a big role in either creating new Radiants or deputizing normal people into squires. The epigraph that references a unique battle plan based around the Bondsmiths may have involved deputizing an entire town of people who held close to Dustbringer ideals and letting them loose?

The 3 Bondsmith limit leans me away from that idea - if there were blended ones to bond, then I'd imagine there'd be more than 3 Bondsmiths. One for each blend/mixture. I've seen interpretations where Stormfather is Honor 75% and Cultivation 25%, with Nightwatcher the reverse, but I don't really dig that idea.

I can't disagree with that interpretation, but I'm thinking in the wider category sort of way. Honor's spren include the Stormfather and honorspren, so why wouldn't Odium have another type of spren separate from voidspren? (What I was calling Odiumspren was trying to include a godspren and voidspren under a single banner) I know there's no evidence for it at this point, but it's more of a pattern thing. Cultivation has the Nightwatcher and Wyndle's spren-type. Honor as above, with Odium being the question. These three having the greatest influence over Roshar leads me to imagine them operating similarly. I'm getting the feeling that having a Bondsmith team up with an Odium godspren is an unpopular opinion on the boards here, but I'm willing to stick to it to see if any insights shake out - even though I will inevitably be proven wrong according to my track record with theories!

Not quite as evocative as Cattlerustler, but I like it. The multiple layers of meaning of the word Shard on Roshar adds to it. Residents of Roshar would be thinking "It's spren more powerful than a shardblade/plate!" and the Cosmere aware would be thinking on a whole different level. Where do you land on this one, Trevor? Do you think Odium left a godspren? Also, is there another shard that may have visited Roshar and wandered off after leaving a spren behind? (I know that technically Adonalsium has visited, but I don't really dig the idea of adonspren - seems too powerful to me) Perhaps Dominion swung by to say hi millennia ago and left behind a godspren? Or any of the others before Odium really got into the swing of things?

The Lord Ruler would probably also be compounding Pewter, making a clean decapitation pretty much impossible. Hitting someone with a koloss blade only to have it get stuck and slowly be pushed out by the healing of compounded gold? That would be terrifying.

I was wondering what kind of spren you might come across in your everyday life, say in your workplace, in your home or your neighbourhood? As a medical student, spending most of my time in the hospital now, I was thinking about what kind of spren I might see while working there. The obvious one would be rotspren - there are some insane presentations of abscesses and advanced infection that show up on the surgical ward, and it would make diagnosing pneumonia a breeze! I think there would be less fearspren coming from patients than you'd expect. More likely exhaustionspren (or frustrationspren) and the same could be said for the doctors. And having painspren around could help us objectively just the level of pain someone is in - no more scale of 1 to 10! Just, "The patient presented with upper right quadrant pain attracting 12 painspren..." (Would that work? Or is the level of spren attracted subjective?) But the medical students would probably have plenty of fearspren around! But we'd also attract a heck of a lot of gloryspren the first times that we get a procedure right. Like when I got my first cannula sited just right, I felt like a god! I've also been skydiving twice, and it would have been even cooler with windspren along for the ride! What kind of spren would you encounter in your life? I feel like this kind of question could help us understand how spren operate. Also, can non-sentient life attract spren? So if your dog attacked and killed a vicious piece of clothing hanging too low on the line, would he attract gloryspren?
-
But are voidspren the only kind of odium spren out there? The theory would come down to the idea of whether you count the Stormfather as an honorspren, or something greater? Hence, would an Odiumfather (terrible, terrible name. I have got to come up with something better) be a voidspren? Hmmmm. The "Hateblender?" "Heartstriker?" "Worldbreaker?" "Cattlerustler?"

Yep, but tossing them around until that "oh!" moment is great fun! Big C reminds me of the shadow events in A Tale of Time City by Diana Wynne Jones - if anyone read her works. In certain parts of the city, powerful moments in time (emotional, historical, etc) would echo back through time and holograms (sort of... more like imprints) of a person committing the imprinting act would be present from the beginning of time, without context. C appearing and gazing in one direction at a particular time reminded me of these events. Big C could just signify the idea of remembering those that die in highstorms, by gazing at the Origin. All in all, he seems more echo than spren at this stage. It would be interesting to see what happens when he returns to the present, if he ever does. And I have been assuming that Cultivation would be the second Smithspren. I can't think of any other candidates, because I'm clinging to the idea that Bondsmiths need to bond with a very specific subset of spren. Perhaps they could bond with a Cryptic King? There was a lot of mentions of Cryptics having cities in Shadesmar and seemed to imply a political/social order.
