  1. Nice! Thanks Moogle! I was under the impression it wasn't possible, but I'm glad to see it's in there. I would think you would just use a gemheart, use the pieces for soulcasting again, again, again, until you are literally left with the materials used to make currency. Really puts the importance of gemhearts into perspective for me. Still wonder how it would react to being cut by a Shardblade though.
  2. I don't know much about gems IRL, but it appears I definitely don't understand them in the context of Stormlight Archive either. Gems are basically the most valuable item in the entire series. They can be used for soulcasting, empowering Shardplate, containing Stormlight, and just plain old currency. They come in all sorts of sizes ranging from chip to gemheart. It is the size difference that is bugging me though. You have this massive gemheart, good for storing huge amounts of Stormlight and soulcasting large quantities of food or shelter, but that all ends the moment it shatters. OK, well does it all turn into dust? Wouldn't you wind up with thousands (I suppose) tiny pieces of gem that are essentially smaller gems and/or chips? Could you not put those into sphere and use them as currency? I figure they could be recut if that is the issue. I can't see why they wouldn't still hold stormlight if only in smaller quantities. The thought only came to me because I was wondering what would happen if someone cut into a chasmfiend and sliced the gemheart by mistake. Would it be such a clean break due to the use of a Shardblade that it was just two half size gemhearts? TL;DR - Why don't shattered gemhearts get recycled into smaller gems and chips for spheres?
  3. I'm inclined to think that after a few Ideals, the reward will go from "holding Stormlight more efficiently" to "holding Stormlight permanently." Maybe everyone will have a personal cap on how much or something. Maybe not.
  4. Haha, I see the point you are trying to make, and I understand it, but we DO have fabrials for walking. And they were made by people who can walk (I assume) for people who cannot walk. If you commanded a group of troops now and they all had no legs, you might begin studying your own legs to build them for others. Hahaha, I know it is kind of silly, but the point is that you are right in that nobody would be building them for themselves, but it is natural for people to work on things of that nature for others, especially those under them.
  5. I like it, obviously, but if you consider the time difference and context of the prologue, you might not find is so difficult to believe the two regions could be the same. For one, there is a massive Desolation-battle concluding on that land, and Kalak (I believe) even mentions that all the destruction indicates the Dustbringers (again I think I remember) doing their work well. So on top of it looking different for those reasons, it might have had thousands of years to grow into what it looks like now. I'm not certain on the timing between, but it's been a long time to put it simply. I like it though, your relating it to Mistborn themes gives it more credit I think, thank you.
  6. That quote got me thinking that perhaps Szeth is under the impression that he is a Voidbringer. I know that would mean he was asking if he existed, but if you consider his weirdly inverted logic on other topics, it may become understandable. I got to thinking that if that was his belief, his punishment, Truthlessness, could be a literal description. His people don't believe in him and his "Voidbringing," so he is without truth. BUT his honor in refusing to kill himself or deviate from his orders prove that he is still here and a thing. Wheel of Time fans, think about how weird the Aiel beliefs were on things like this: men who could channel would think it their duty to go fight the dark one, so they would just run off. Cool. So. That got me wondering then about Voidbinding, and I considered something I hadn't before: Szeth can use Windrunner abilities, Order 1, and pretty much fits the bill for the exact inverse of the qualities. In other words, he is VOID of them. He is not a leader, in fact he follows like a mad man. He is not protective, in fact he stomps on others protection, and is basically an entirely offensive tool thus far. These may not be the things that landed him in this role, but they seem like good examples of him developing these inverse characteristics. Maybe we'll have 10 Voidbringer Orders that are all void of the described characteristics. If anyone has seen ideas like these discussed, I'd love to hear of them. I tried a search but it was hard to word and brought up like....every topic.
  7. I had a theory about that in this very thread! 'http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/4332-what-a-shame-bit-of-fun/?p=68163'
  8. Hah, I didn't mean to be overly zesty. There is a certain feeling among internet forum users that participation is mandatory. I meant for this thread to be an invitation, not an RSVP. If I could delete all the posts that discouraged people, I would do so, but not to say that I take offense, just so that others come to the idea with an open mind rather than seeing "This is something I don't want to do." Those posts add nothing. That said - I could have been much clearer on the type of post I intended this to be. I didn't really even expect responses, good or bad, so I apologize for snippiness. Also, if this gets turned into an organized reread that can still keep the same format, hell, I could just start then on a 2 day delay
  9. I had to say none of the above. I think it would require the time of a TV series, each having the budget of a single movie. Video games almost never turn out well, which is why, as someone who plays a lot of them, I am both excited and worried about the Mistborn game. Of course I will own it and play it, but I find myself in constant cringe mode. (If only Spider Man II had turned out poorly, I could say they NEVER work out. )
  10. Yeah, you know what, I'm going to try to pull this off with myself and a friend regardless, but if anyone else can bring themselves to be distracted for a moment, it might be very beneficial to see a log of your thoughts as you go through the first time. It will really put a filter on what is new information when you look back on it. It may expose a clue or two.
  11. Note: "Flexible" Note: Clearly not the target audience of this post.
  12. haha, maybe if I have enough "sick" days....
  13. Hahah, it is not for everyone, and I wouldn't do it if I thought I could realistically get that book finished in a couple days. It would be a great time though.
  14. Hey, I decided that as much as I would like to, I will not have time to read Words of Radiance all in one night. After coming to terms with that idea, and the fact that I would then have to be off the forums for the duration of the read, I decided I would post an alternate solution, and propose it to 17thSharders as well. I think it would really be a great time if a group did the reading "together" over the course of say.... 2 weeks? I don't know, it is flexible, but the idea is that every night, we read 2 or 3 or x chapters, then come on the forums to discuss what we are thinking without moving along. It would really be fun to see peoples end-of-chapter or end-of-part reactions instead of just the thoughts we see when book-long arcs are finally concluded. It would be like watching episodes of your favorite tv show and talking to your friends while you wait for the next episode. PLUS: On a night that you just can not wait, you can read, post your reactions, and then continue reading but not post until the next day. It would take a good amount of self control, but I think it would be worth it for those of us who can't finish it in a night or two anyway. If anyone finds this idea interesting, I'm game for it, just let me know.
  15. Hah, thanks Windrunner. When I wrote this post, I didn't even know WoR had separate forums xD
  16. I like it, Magnus. A good start at least. It has always had a very similar feeling to Job's story, but I could never put my finger on it. Edit: Accidentally credited Shardlet because I had just looked at that post and my brain farted.
  17. Your gentlemanly picture combined with that gentlemanly comment really impressed me
  18. Maybe one piece Honor via Honorblade and one piece Cultivation via [?]. Or is this out of the realm of possibility? There is a certain line in the Jasnah reading from WoR that might suggest that the disconnect between Herald and Honorblade is having adverse affects on the Heralds...... I don't know how to use spoiler tags.
  19. I'm not sure it's even close to where I expected to go with this topic, but if the Heralds did have a bond with their Honorblades, it would explain a few things. For one, them slamming the coolest blades ever into the ground and walking away would be an actual action that severs them from their power/responsibility, where the lack of a bond turns this action into... I don't know.... wastefulness? In addition, Kaladin gets his powers from an HONORspren. If the Heralds got theirs from HONORblades, each being a manifestation of their connection/bond to Honor, then both Szeth's powers and their leaving them suddenly make sense. Maybe the blades are a physical connection and the spren are a spiritual connection. I guess this topic connects by saying: I think there could very well be a lot more to them leaving the blades than we think about.
  20. ^True that. I will note though, that my convoluted theory was an extension/patch that was meant to reinforce the base theory by showing possible (if unfounded) solutions to certain gaps before they needed to be pointed at. The Thunderclast/Chasmfiend theory doesn't seem to fit at all though. The descriptions are not even similar. One has glowing red eyes, and a protruding stone ribcage. The other is described more as a giant, hungry lobster.
  21. The prelude doesn't describe chasmfiends, it describes Thunderclasts, but I always mentally lumped them in there as well. Some of the description really does sound like the Shattered Plains, but at the same time, it describes natural stone pillars, which I don't recall being part of the Shattered Plains. It came across differently when I visualized it after considering it might not be the Shattered Plains.
  22. Hahaha, as is the case with any theorizing. It is an unproven explanation that exists to connect or rationalize other pieces of information.
  23. Taken by other people, yes, but it could be like a bandage bond. Like the Heralds discarded the blades made specifically for them at that place, and you can take it, but when you die, it is going to go back to where it was put. It is only mentioned that others can "use" an Honorblade. I can use the Waverunner I rent at the lake, but I have to take it back when I'm done.
  24. After reading the prelude again, I noticed we were given references to rocks and things coming from rocks and formations of rocks quite a bit. Thinking on this for a quick 20 seconds provided me with this theory that, right now, is still in rambling, bullet-point format: The Heralds left their Honorblades in the stone on the battlefield. Some Shin (or the people that would become the Shin) discovered the blades, and a select few set to keeping them a secret. The method for doing this was simply to tell the people around them that stone was sacred, and not to be walked upon. Maybe this rule turns into legend, myth, religion, whatever. Szeth is "Truthless" because he violated this law, walked on the stone, and took one of the Honorblades. That, or he is Truthless for some other reason, and thus considered hopeless enough to go take an Honorblade. Maybe the Honorblades cannot be bound to a person other than a Herald, or there is some other stipulation, and the means by which they are recovered is that they poof back over to that stone when the person dies. These ideas may be basic points of a complex system I can't guess, but the point was to find a relationship between rocks, the Shin, Truthless, and the Honorblades. Thoughts?
