I addressed that this might be a problem and said that I still think it will have been Puppy. No more muddy than expected.

FIrst, I think it was Natans who posted somewhere that our Earth years are about 1.1x a Roshar year. So it isn't far off. Second, I'm having trouble seeing how those are related? Like why does the difference in those dates mean she is writing from after the Everstorm? She may be, but I'm pretty sure those Deathchant quotes are independent of the story's actual timeline related to that chapter.

Excerpt from Words of Radiance: Chapters Six, Eight, and Nine
Bloodfalcon replied to kobain's topic in Stormlight Archive
Hmmmmmm.... Perhaps the Heralds control the spren that grant Surgebinding associated with their order? Shallash would be the head of the Ring, or appointed the Ring, and Vedeldev is the Mother that Wyndle is talking about? -

Perhaps each of the books will even be related to a particular Order, or the KR in general? -

My quick thoughts as well: 7 · Wow, Shen is going to be a spy….. L · Puppy. He will always be named Puppy. · “Terrible destruction to eat!” Puppy is calling Shallan fat. · Turning the deck green- first illusions · BOOM! Posted on lies being a different concept this morning. Loving this. I think he considered the deck illusion to be a lie and that is what used up Shallan’s Stormlight. Confirmed by Jasnah · Only a KR could open the way – Can’t wait for Moogle’s (?) Oathgates. · I could see Jasnah influencing the Kholin camp to get rid of Parshmen, but Dalinar set her up to fail with the others. Maybe that is why Navani is journaling as she is – Kholin is the only camp left? · WoR is a book in WoR. So meta. 8 · Dalinar disliking needless deaths. Hey Moogle! J · Learning about Shardblade loaning is interesting. Might add into a couple threads. · Dang, I was looking forward to new Dalinar cracking some skulls. · Dalinar suspects…. Dalinar! 9 · Glad Teft is going to continue being a boss. I like Teft. · Glowy red spren = bad news. · Syl tugging her hair – The woman she saw in the market must have been Nynaeve from WoT · Syl has a little weight now? I wonder what that means. · Stormfather is more mysterious now. Rules over some spren at least. Maybe Jezrien does make sense as he is the Herald of that Order. Hmmmmmmm... · NOOOOOOO! Chapter 10 please!!! Dang, why do I have the feeling we will have to wait for it? -

Yeah I don't think it is the entirety of the relationship by any means, but I like the pattern shaping up. As far as the voice w/ Shallan goes, I initially thought it was the cup too, and it is still very VERY possible obviously, but after listening to the scene again, I think it would be more significant for Shallan to be interacting with Puppy for the first time than with the spirit of a random cup, and Puppy does talk to her like that. The context is appropriate too. I just don't expect Shallan to have a conversation with every inanimate object she decides to transform. I think she'll be developing her relationship with Puppy.

I was doing some thinking today in the car during my re[listen] and decided something about Puppy. For those who don't follow, Puppy is the tentative name for Shallan's spren, as he acts just like a puppy and no other animal. In the new chapters, Jasnah names him a liespren. We also have a WoB that Puppy is a truthspren (though it sounds as though Brandon was making a joke). Moreover, we believe it is pre-puppiness Puppy who asks Shallan to reveal a truth and tells her that it has been a long time, but he is ready to "change" when she is in Shadesmar. This obviously means Soulcast, so I assume it's Puppy. We believe that these bondable spren are attracted to the very attributes they are named after, as well as those listed on the Ars Arcanum. Shallan is not very truthful though. So I think "truthspren" is out. She is a bit of a liar- hell she has some huge lies ready to be revealed - but I find it hard to believe that one KR Order is going to be based on everyone hiding murders and that sort of thing. So here is what I decided on, and personally I like it a lot: The term "liar" is being used in an alternative way to the definition we give it normally. You could throw the liar title onto a magician or a fiction author with the right definition. I think Puppy was goading her into using it to come to terms with what she will do. She is going to be an Illusionist by everyone's best guess. It is going to be a fundamental component of her abilities to create lies and create them well. (As far as her secondary attribute goes, Honesty, I think her ability to lie so convincingly will cause her problems unless she can prove to others that she will be honest enough to trust. I think it will come in time.) In the same way I can see honor being a critical component of Protecting, while Leading is a result of honor. There are many leaders who don't have honor in this series, but because of their nobility. Kaladin will gain Leadership and has gained leadership because of his honor and protection of others. I would be extremely pleased if there ended up being a system to this where the Surgebinder started with their primary attribute, that attracted their spren, and as a result they grew into their secondary attribute. I'm less sure about Lift and Wyndle, but I think the same can be said. She starts out with a natural ability to be Loving which draws in Wyndle, and now that they are together, she appears to be developing a passion for healing. If this is all already known or assumed, the purpose of this post was almost more to say that this is the reason I love Brandon Sanderson books. Systems!

Jezrien, Shards, and the identity of the Broken One
Bloodfalcon replied to FirstSelector's topic in Stormlight Archive
I wouldn't be doing my duty as a 17th Sharder if I did not cite the line I just heard in my re[listen]. When this theory was posted, I thought it was really interesting, and anyone can tell you that I am all about theorizing a good twist of understanding. Then I questioned it above as I started to think about it, but I still really liked it just for being fun. NOW I heard a quote that is close enough to discredit it in my mind, but that is not to say I don't still appreciate this post enough for my upvote! I'll get at it now, sorry. In the scene where Kaladin is "riding the storm" and sees Szeth, a voice speaks to him - that big ole head in the storm. I'm not sure if it is Stormfather Jezrien or if it is Memory-Tanavast, but he specifically says "Odium reins." If OP quote didn't use exactly the same word, I would be less sure. But that is dead on. I consider my question about Cultivation answered, and I consider my mind made up that Odium is the Broken One. Looking back, I don't think I can make the argument that the statement would be more significant referring to one over the other, so I wouldn't expect anyone to change their minds if the prefer the Jezrien theory, but I figured I would come give some evidence that countered it for me at least.- 62 replies

As far as I'm concerned, Kharbranth is the world's Soulcasting capitol. Shallan makes that same mental note late into the book and backs it up with the evidence that Taravangian needed Jasnah for his granddaughter and that rock. I'm calling BS (not the author). Where else do we hear or find evidence of them not having any? I think if I was supposed to hear an explanation, I already missed it.

Theory: Hark! The Heralds' Angels Weep

It has long been my opinion that we the chaff needs to be hunted down and replaced with our favorite POV characters. I'm signed on -
Thanks, just went back and looked into the 300 post and found it toward the end, but the fact that I saw no reference in Steelhunt thread or Mistborn seems like a good enough reason to just have a topic title spell it out. I wouldn't have known unless I randomly checked.

It's Mistborn related, so I figured I would alert this thread. Haven't seen anyone mention it. Brandonsanderson.com/steel-hunt

Wild speculation: Kaladin will have a "shardspear"
Bloodfalcon replied to flowers's topic in Stormlight Archive
eh. He has grown to really hate lighteyes themselves. There are several times where he says something like "All lighteyes lie/abuse authority." Whether or not he believes a Shardblade will automatically make him like them, I doubt he is interested in joining the club. -
Selfish Post - Need Personal Recommendation

haha, thank you. Discworld looks pretty crazy - I think I would enjoy it. Added to the list. -
Note: Mr. T is Taravangian or however you spell his name. I am on vacation this weekend, so I probably won't be following up on this much, but I think Mr. T is bonded with a spren or is about to be. I just listened to the scene where Shallan draws a sketch of Mr. T and sees the symbolhead behind him. Obviously we are supposed to think that it is one of those that is following around Shallan later in the book, but I am suspicious now that it may have been her getting a glimpse of HIS spren. I had other thoughts that branch off of this: If Mr. T was more familiar with his spren at the time, it could have told him of Jasnah's and Shallan's spren. If you reread the section, you will see that Mr. T tries to touch on the subject of Jasnah's Soulcaster once or twice. She reassures him she got it legitimately, and he drops it, but I wonder if he was just probing because he is trying to figure out her abilities. It could mean the granddaughter behind a boulder was set up to see if the Soulcaster was working- perhaps he sabotaged it himself. Thoughts?

Jezrien, Shards, and the identity of the Broken One
Bloodfalcon replied to FirstSelector's topic in Stormlight Archive
Odium is away, Honor's holder died, wouldn't that make it more likely that Cultivation is the Broken One? After all, she is the only one who is still kickin, right? We also know she has gone through a bunch of trauma including Honor's fall and her new disinterest in mankind. I'm not trying to debunk this theory or anything, it just looks like Cultivation gets overlooked with both the Odium and Honor theories. I mean, Tanavast died and Odium is off on an evil vacation. That kind of only leaves one, right?- 62 replies

Wild speculation: Kaladin will have a "shardspear"
Bloodfalcon replied to flowers's topic in Stormlight Archive
I would love a Shardspear, but I'm still not sure why people insist on it. It is true that Kaladin is great with a spear, but he picked it up and got the hang of it surprisingly fast. It wasn't because he was naturally drawn to spears - it was just all that was available. I'm not so certain he would have chosen one over a sword if he had the chance. I don't think he ever says he wouldn't train with a sword, either. He seems to have a natural ability to learn things like that, and I don't think it is exclusive to spears. It will make him unique to wield a spear where others have swords, so I'm rooting for it, but it would make just as much sense for him to find swords entertaining and natural to him as well. Can anyone provide a quote or a reference to where he says he wouldn't use a sword? I mean he leaves the Shardblade, but that is on principle, not because it is a sword. -
Jasnah also saw weird behavior in shadows. She is not of the same Order. I think Cryptics are going to be the name of the Lightweaver spren, but we at least know they are a particular group, and other spren have similar characteristics and tells.
-
There's no evidence of him having the same type of spren. In fact, we've only seen one member of each Order so far as I know. Elhokar could have a worryspren. They would be good buds
-
The same could be said for metals in Mistborn though...

I just want to see him come back a hero with his people following him into battle or something. Or at least, him directing them to it, as he doesn't fight. Fantasy authors like to spend a lot of time teaching main characters about tribal cultures that are so different from their own (Jordan w/ Aiel, Rothfuss w/Adem, the list goes on...) and I really would kind of like to just keep it where Rock is amused by other characters actions, and we are amused by Rock. There is so much else going on, I really don't want to get deep into that culture, for starters. But also I'd just like to keep my image of it. We know they are there. They don't really do much right now. It's ok to not explore every location mentioned and still have it tie in eventually (AKA we lose Rock for a bit but he comes back like Aragorn with a ghost army).
