Renarin showed a particular interest in Navani's new fabrial, and Dalinar reflected on how he hoped Renarin would join the Ardentia because it would allow him to study things like engineering and pursue his intellectual interests. Renarin does not like to admit his interest in these areas because they are considered feminine pursuits.

They could be some other Voidbringer/Desolation related creature like the Thunderclasts. Or Crabwasps could be what emerge from chasmfiend chrysalises.

I think the knots of rank on Adolin's uniform that Kaladin is noticing are knots of military rank, not social caste. Adolin's high military rank, without knowing his family name, suggests second or third dahn.

I agree that the creatures depicted on the chart are probably not actually dragons in any traditional sense, but I don't think they are axehounds either. They look kind of half insect (note the wasp tail, the six legs and the mandibles), half crustacean, (the claws), and it looks like they have wings too. Remember that this is supposed to be in-world art created by an in-world artist, so the actual creature these are based on might look a little different. However, based on all of this, I think it is at least safe to say that we have yet to see all of the really weird and nifty creatures that Brandon has created to inhabit Roshar.

I hadn't heard the bit about the disagreement amongst spren about which ones are Honorspren. Could we get a reference for that? Is there a thread where that idea is being discussed already? Also, I lean towards there being a bit more binding Szeth than just his word, some actual magic binding him so that he cannot commit suicide, etc. However if the rock is magical itself, then could Szeth be released from his Truthlessness simply by someone destroying the stone? That seems like it might be too easy. Which sends me back towards the rock itself not being magical, and just a symbol that determines who his master is. So perhaps there is real magic holding him to his word, even while the rock is not magical in and of itself but simply some kind of focus object?

I suspect that all the Devotaries are also Orders of a particular Herald. So the Order of Telenalat could also be known as the Devotary of Strength or something like that. As for the Devotaries we know the names of, Insight, Sincerity and Purity, my guesses are Betab, Palah, and Ishi, but I could be totally off. Anyways, I would guess that the ten Devotaries coincide with the ten divine attributes, which each coincide with a Herald.

Yeah, that's the one. I guess that explains it then.

When I saw the wiki was offline I did a google search. I was thinking I might find the answer on some other forum, but one of the first things to pop up was the wiki article. Maybe it worked because I went straight to an article instead of starting at the wiki home?

I've recently been re-reading parts of tWoK and at one point Kabsal attempts to convince Shallan to switch devotaries. There does not seem to be a reference to which devotary Kabsal belongs to however. Shallan is in the Devotary of Purity, and later Jasnah suggests the Devotary of Sincerity would suit Shallan. So my question is this: What Devotary names do we know and which one does Kabsal actually belong to? Perhaps this is a question for Brandon: What are the names of all the Vorin Devotaries? Edit: It seems I've found the answer to my own question in the Coppermind in the article "Vorin." I suppose the implication is that Kabsal, being a Palanaeum ardent, belongs to the Devotary of Insight. Still, it would be interesting to know the names of the rest of the Devotaries and figure out which Herald each one belongs to.

Upvote for the comparison between Hoid and the Doctor. They really do have a lot in common: highly inteligent, witty, time traveling (though Hoid only moves forwards), longevity, a compulsion to intervene in the affairs of other worlds, insatiable curiosity, etc. I think Hoid is way to cool to be a bad guy... and he does try to help Dalinar. Though I agree it could be possible that while his intentions are good, the consequences of his interventions may not always be what is really best for the cosmere.

I suppose this is what people call thread necromancy... Anyways, I just read this thread and the discussion didn't ever really come back to this question about why Odium is still attacking Roshar even though Honor is already dead. I think your thought about Honor reforming, or returning is a good one and I would like to possibly add to it. We know the Oathpact was broken when the Heralds refused to return to Damnation, and this is probably what gave Odium the opening he needed to splinter/kill Honor/Tanavast. I think the reason Odium isn't done though is because Taln died. Talenel'Elin Stonesinew did not break the pact. I'm thinking that Taln holding on to the oathpact is somehow binding Odium to Roshar, and he needs to completely finish the job. Or possibly Taln's holding to the oathpact is what is giving Honor the ability to slowly coalesce and return to challenge Odium. Somehow Honor has been able to start influencing the world again, (possibly starting with Gavilar uniting Alethkar and/or maybe something weird happening in Shinovar involving Szeth's past) which may be what has triggered Odium to start ramping up for a final Desolation. Perhaps Tanavast realized that there was some hope for Honor, maybe that it would one day be possible for the Shard to be taken up again by someone else, which is why he left the visions/messages that Dalinar is now receiving - to help that hope become a reality. Anyways, this probably all needs is own thread in the Stormlight section, or more probably there are already several discussing this stuff and I just haven't found them.

Remember that the Ars Arcanum is meant to be an in-world document. The author may not have completely understood how lashings work, even though Brandon does. I'm hoping we will get a more complete understanding of how lashings work in book two as we watch Kaladin figuring out how to use his abilities. I'm very interested to see the results of Sigzil's tests.

I was under the impression that Preservation and Ruin did make a conscious choice to work together to create life on Scadrial though, and so Feruchemy would be a natural consequence of that interaction. I suppose I'll have to go look for a reference on that. Anyways I figured Devotion and Dominion would have a similar story, working together to create life, resulting in the existence of a balance magic. Then again, we don't actually know for sure that life on Sel was created by those Shards or if it was there when they arrived. As for Cultivation, Honor, and Odium, isn't the standing theory that people on Roshar came there from a different Shardworld? The Tranquiline Halls being a reference to Honor's former planet? There was no working together to create life among those Shards. Is this turning out to be a completely new theory? That balance magics occur when two shards work together to create life on a planet. I suppose that may or may not fit with your shard complements theory. Perhaps shards have to be complements in order to work together in the first place. I'll have to do some reading and referencing and thinking about that. We've certainly strayed from the topic of Shardic future sight...
-
Just because Dominion and Devotion are complements (assuming that theory is correct) who at some time worked together and created a balance magic, it doesn't mean they continued to work together, or were still working together when Odium came. Preservation and Ruin are a perfect example of that. Feruchemy still existed long after the two had stopped working together and started fighting each other. The same could be true of Dominion, Devotion and the ChayShan. In fact, I would take the religious split on Sel as evidence of this. The Jindo religion of balance coming from some the idea of the two sides working together, then the split among the disciples over unity via dominion or devotion. Anyways, the two things - shards being complements and creating a balance magic together and them fighting and opposing each other- are not mutually exclusive.

I think we are going to have to get more Cosmere information in the Stormlight books. Jasnah actually uses the word "Cosmere" at one point, and they know about Shadesmar and the concept of physical, spiritual and cognitive realms. We may not learn much about the other Shards or Adonalsium specifically, but I think there is going to have to be at least some discussion of Realmatic theory and an understanding that Odium, Honor, and Cultivation are all the same kind of being. Also, I am hoping we will get more insight into the rules that govern the interactions between Shards - all that stuff about choosing Champions that Honor talked about. It appears that understanding Spren will give a bunch of insight into the Cosmere too, Brandon Sanderson said something about the Spren being related to Nightblood. Anyways none of that has anything to do with the original topic... except that there is still a lot to read and find out about for all of us.

Background on brandonsanderson.com

I've always assumed that the dragon in the middle has to do with the fact that Brandon's company is called Dragonsteel Entertainment. -
I suppose this is probably thread necromancy, but I was wandering around on this forum and after a quick glance through this thread I noticed that no one recommended any of the books that my older brother gave to me when I was that age. David Eddings' The Belgariad and The Mallorean are great starter series for young potential fantasy readers. Going back and reading them now, I find them cliche and a little boring, but when I was just getting started they were fantastic. They introduce the most basic fantasy tropes in a way that is easy to understand and enjoy. Other books that I loved when I was thirteen include the Redwall books by Brian Jacques, Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time, and of course the Chronicles of Narnia.

Well, I know there are theories about Adonalsium being re-created by uniting all the Shards into one holder. We have evidence that it's possible since Sazed/Harmony holds two Shards now. This could be the end goal of the seventeenth shard organization or maybe Hoid. Hopefully we'll get some glimpses into some of the other worlds' futures as well during the last Mistborn trilogy which is supposed to be set in outer space in the far future.

Mistborn Adventure Game is Out + Contest!

Sounds like fun! -
It makes me wonder what sort of entities exist on the spiritual realm that are only vaguely shadowed in the cognitive/physical realms. I'm totally thinking ghosts! I agree that this second part is probably referring to spren. I'm thinking specifically of the symbol-headed fellows that Shallan sees only in her drawings. She doesn't see them physically, but she perceives them on a cognitive level in her Memories which she can then draw. Edit: inserted quotation and fixed grammar for clarification

I just finished the book about five minutes ago. I have a theory about how Harmony can communicate with Wax. I think it has to do with his prayer earring. It was given to him by one of those Faceless Immortal people (who I assume is a Kandra). I'm thinking its some kind of Hemalurgic thing, the way Vin's earring allowed her to communicate with Ruin in the trilogy. Also, notice that every time Wax communicates with Harmony he his wearing his earring. Now reactions: This book was awesome! I really want to know what the book Marsh gave to Marasi has in it. And with the sister and the other girls still missing and the Uncle still on the loose it makes me with Brandon would write another novella as a sequel to this, but it looks like we'll have to wait until the next Trilogy to find out what happened. That makes me kind of sad, except that I'm also super excited about the next Stormlight books, and the planned Elantris sequel. I just wish Brandon could write all those books all at once. Oh well.

I'm wondering if this means that Hemalurgy could be used to steal abilities that don't exist on Scadrial. Could someone use it to steal surgebinding abilities? Or maybe it could give metallic abilities someone who is not from Scadrial? I'm sure there's a whole spiritual DNA issue here though. Also the thing about Hemalurgy not being inherently evil makes me wonder if there's a way to use it without killing the person you are stealing abilities from.

pg. 891, line 7, hardcover - "They soon entered the staging area. Dalinar's father, in his Shardplate..." I'm not sure if it's supposed to be "Dalinar, in his Shardplate," or "Adolin's father, in his Shardplate."
-
Sorry, my wording should have been better. I should say that keeping his oaths is possibly how Szeth gained windrunner-type abilities, rather than became a windrunner.
-
Honor among thieves concept. A thief can be a bad guy but still act with honor by choosing to only steal from rich people or choosing to never hurt people in the process, or choosing not to nark on other thieves, that sort of thing. Also, Szeth is bound by his honor to do a lot of really bad things. I would say that this is how Szeth became a windrunner, by always keeping his promises/oaths even when that means obeying very bad people, although his lack of a spren is still unexplained. I think I'm on board with the body being the focus for Surgebinding. Although I'm not sure how someone would use their hair to focus their power. Didn't someone ask Brandon about this? I thought I remembered seeing the question in an interview somewhere, but I don't remember. I also don't remember what Brandon's answer was, I think it might have been a RAFO. Also are we certain there are 41 ideals? The first is always the same, but are the four others always different? Could there be some overlap? Perhaps the Radiants that share a surge also share some ideals, but not all of them. I think someone earlier talked about this and said there are 20 ideals after the first one, two for each surge.
