My theory is very different from what everyone else has said. Odium realized that what he needed to do was wait the humans out. This is explained in WoK, Dalinar's last vision. He figured they would disintegrate on their own and forget the war they were fighting if they didn't have honor to guide them. I think Taln maybe wasn't tortured similar to before other desolations, as the fused/odium didn't want to return asap like before. Maybe he was imprisoned. 4500 years of anything would drive anyone mad Im sure.
