How do you feel about inter-species…
AlmightyGir replied to christianrapper's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Romeo and Juliet was a story about two people from rival houses who were literally murdering each other in the streets over a misunderstood grudge. Forbidden love is a pillar of fantasy romance, and has been for hundreds of years. See also: Captain Kirk. -
Kelsier's Decension? Is Harmony "wrong"?
AlmightyGir replied to Qianweilian's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Can Hoid actively lie? Ommiting the truth is one thing. But lies are harmful, and Hoid has been so affected by the Dawnshard he holds that he cannot actively cause harm. Currently stated in print at least as being physical harm, but he can't even consume meat anymore, which means it's not just limited to things that are strictly speaking alive, and capable of being harmed. The animal is already dead, he's incapable of harming it further. Do lies count as harm in this way? Would the Dawnshard stop him being able to actively lie? -
This seems reasonable. Though the blades themselves are made of pure Tanavastium, Jezrien's blade is the only one that exists without it's coupling Herald. With Jezrien dead, it's likely that some or all of the Connection that made the weapon a "true" Honorblade is likely gone. The weapon itself (apparently sentient, according to Nightblood?) might have been searching for a new Intent once Jezrien died. Obviously the above is guesswork/speculation, but to me at least it makes some kind of sense. As the blades were formed during the oathpact and each one was formed by or for the Heralds specifically. I can't imagine they were just made without some kind of Connection directly to their respective Herald.

Kelsier's Decension? Is Harmony "wrong"?
AlmightyGir replied to Qianweilian's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Undoubtedly correct, however I think there should be a distinction between one who has Ascended by taking a portion of the power (in the case of the well, the naturally accumulating physical portion of the power at a perpendicularity), and being an actual shardbearer. I imagine that giving up the shard in its totality is something entirely different from Ascension via the pool. This is further complicated by the fact that, if I remember correctly, Leras was already dying at this point, and his power/essence unravelling. Can a cognitive shadow even hold a shard fully? -
I see no Reason.

Kelsier's Decension? Is Harmony "wrong"?
AlmightyGir replied to Qianweilian's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Just a point of order, and I might be incorrect here... But while Vin takes up the Power at the end of Well of Ascension, she does so in the same way Rashek does. This makes her a sliver at the time, rather than a shardbearer. Leras is still the shardbearer at the time, his death and Vin's true ascension don't occur until later on. While it is certainly noble of her to give up the power she held, it's distinctly different from giving up the full power of a shard. That said, I also think Wit is referring to Vin. -
How do you feel about inter-species…

I don't think anything I've said contradicts or disagrees with this. In fact I think I was quite explicit about needing to be capable of giving informed consent. -

My question is more related to Harmonium/Ettmetal: If the running theory about Harmony is correct, and that he also has the potential to become Discord, does that mean that if/when that happens, a variation of Ettmetal will exist that has different properties? IE: if Harmony is Harmony because he's surpressing Ruin, Harmonium might be the way it is because it has a lower volume of Ruin/Atium in its composition. If/when the shift is made to Discord, would any of his godmetal that's created after that point be higher volume of Ruin/Atium in the composition, and what effect would that have on the resulting alloy?

Odium already controlled (and Jasnah/Queen Fen knew this as well) the other nations. Thaylena was the only non-militarily contested nation left for him to approach by the time the debate took place. Alethkar holding more territory would have benefitted her greatly, especially a major port city that Odium was bound (at that point) to not be allowed to attack after the showdown.

How do you feel about inter-species…
AlmightyGir replied to christianrapper's topic in Cosmere Discussion
So... Humans don't have the ability to transform on a molecular level (well, scientifically speaking we do it every instance of every moment of every second of every minute of every hour... And so on), but we cannot directly choose our physical appearance, it's the combination of genetic traits. But then, we have makeup, clothing choices, hair styles, beard styles, and so on. Even within the context of two regular old real-life humans, a husband and wife can be more, or less attracted to each other based on their physical presentation at a given moment. People go to the gym, change their diets, etc. To make themselves more physically paletteable to their desired mate all the time. Singers are pretty dope in that they can just change their form to match what their partner wants. What's less dope is that it also changes their attitudes, but Rlain had said that those changes are more of emphasis of attitudes that existed, so one would assume with conscious effort, they can be somewhat surpressed. Anyway, different topic. The point is, there are many, many examples of science fiction, or other genres of fiction where inter-species relationships happen and work, and sometimes don't work. But I can't help but get the feeling you're trying to dance around a different topic with your arguments. I think someone else mentioned Elves in the thread, and I think that's a really good example. People are totally fine with human-elf relationships in media, because elves look just like humans, but prettier and with pointy ears... Let's completely remove the fact that a 40 year old human is middle aged, and a 100 year old elf is considered a child by their society. And yet somehow it's all just fine. What are you *really* hung up on? -
If You Drew Nightblood at Urithiru ...
AlmightyGir replied to Raven Wilder's topic in Stormlight Archive
The best way to explain Infinity is to think of it more as "unknown". Infinite, is the opposite of Finite. Finite means "has an end", or "has a definition". 5 is Finite, it is 5. Infinite being the opposite of Finite means "has no definition", "has no end", "has no beginning", "cannot be set". It is both nothing, and everything. -
How do you feel about inter-species…
AlmightyGir replied to christianrapper's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I see this as being similar to Star-Trek. Humanoid is good enough for people to maintain relationships. You're entitled to the way you feel, but I don't see this as a big deal.- 203 replies

Do Shards have unique abilities?
AlmightyGir replied to Hoids Imaginary Friend's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Well... I don't know if it's unique or not, but Odium is able to remove peoples abilities to feel. -
How do you feel about inter-species…
AlmightyGir replied to christianrapper's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Love is love. As long as both parties are capable of, and are consenting, what's the problem? Your example of Wax is slightly different. His consent may have changed based on the with-held knowledge of the shape-shifting nature of his partner. But in the other cases we've seen (the most obvious being Rlain and Renarin), both parties are aware of the nature of each other's respective species, are capable of giving informed consent, and seem to do so. The issue you're asking about is not one of inter-species relationships, but is instead one of trust between two individuals, where one of those individuals is deliberately witholding information.- 203 replies

The required components aside, that's basically what I meant. Anything capable of storing Investiture should be a good enough vessal for Hemalurgy. Scadrial has metal Roshar has gems Looking forward to seeing a Hemalurgic Sandcastle from Taldane (Maybe a glass spike made of invested white sand?).
-
I believe Hemalurgy is the act of tearing a portion of an invested person's Spirit, and quite literally nailing it to the Spirit of another. In that sense, all that really matters is that the nail be made of a material capable of holding Investiture.

Cool Dalinar shadow spirit world stuff.

Pretty distinct, in that Honor vapourized Tanavast. -
Cool Dalinar shadow spirit world stuff.
AlmightyGir replied to Through the Living Wrath's topic in Cosmere Discussion
That's not what happened... Honor left Dalinar, and while Big T was gathering the shard, the storm whipped up. Dalinar managed to save Gavinor before he died, and he died to rocks to the head, rather than being vapourised by the power in the same manner as Tanavast and Hoid. You could say Big T killed Dalinar, but it was almost entirely by accident, or simply coincidental, as it was the result of the storm rising rather than a direct act from Big T. -
Stormlight and How much of Honor is left
AlmightyGir replied to Master Silver's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I don't think he even needs to wait that long. Dalinar as the shardbearer of Honor, renounced all previous oaths, completely unbounding Odium. The fact that the Honorable part of Retribution feels it necessary to uphold things like the territorial boundaries at the end of the war is actually very interesting as a result. -
Is Taravangian's old deal still in play?
AlmightyGir replied to Letryx13's topic in Stormlight Archive
Given that every character who's experienced the Spiritual Realm has said that staying in there for prolonged periods of time is straight up bad for you... One does wonder how long Kharbranth and its citizens can withstand the place. Presumably, it's largely being held together by some measure of concentrated effort by Big T, much like how all of the visions worked. There were times when characters were able to note that Odium was not directly looking at them in the Spiritual Realm by virtue of the visions feeling different. Does that mean if something pulls enough of Big T's energy/effort/concentration away from Kharbranth, it becomes less protected from the other effects of the realm, and the people within it start going crazy? How does *living* in the Spiritual Realm affect someone's Spirit Web? What about their Cognitive Shadows? It's been stated so far that the Spiritual Realm is essentially a storage facility for the *truth* of a person's life, their memories, the *actual* things they did in the Physical and Cognitive realms. But if you live in the Spiritual Realm, how can you imprint those truths? Does your future basically become null? Has Big T inadvertently doomed his people?- 13 replies

Did book 5 affect your feelings of the whole series?
AlmightyGir replied to christianrapper's topic in Cosmere Discussion
No. -
He can and does admit it, and hates Dalinar for it. What he refuses to do is hate himself for it.
