    Rebus scoffs. “I cannot Narrate a Nullite safe, but I could break it using something I Narrated into existence. Likewise, I was able to remove this poison with tools I created; I think it is chaotic-darkness derived, though I’ll have to test it further.” Rebus tries to determine if wind has worked for the Witherlord before. “The real me is. It’s funny, actually. My Author is worried about what I will do, but too intrigued to kill me off. Because I can break the fourth wall, I’m one of the most emergent characters he’s ever written.”

    “Then you’re not a puppet. You need your Author to truly get you in order for you to come alive.”

    Rebus holds up a finger. “Ah, but it is. If you establish a personality that your Author knows intimately and at least partially roots for, you can come more alive. I offered to help you.”

    He nods. “Yes. Everything is your Author’s fault, so I do not think it is much of an excuse. And I did offer to do something about that.”

    He raises an eyebrow. “You pressed all the buttons and made my firework display explode; you have either an imposter or an alter ego who started a storyline and then ignored it, but when I told uoy you didn’t believe me; and you refused to work with me or even consider it in the future when I offered.”

    “I was confused by the singing, but you’ve let me down several times. Every time I’ve interacted with you, actually.” He projects a hologram of his improperly exploding pyrotechnic display. “I do like Bat, however. And I think we might do things if you were actually willing to work with me.”

    Rebus looks at her strangely. “Are they Narrative butterflies? It seems they’d have trouble with several aspects of the process. If it works, though, I’m glad my Author won’t have to do it.” Rebus chuckles. “Of course. I get animated and then frozen again all the time. Your Author types quickly, I must say. I wish mine did.”

    Rebus nods. “That is likely true. I shall endeavor for personal growth rather than take shortcuts. I have one question, but you may explain as you begin.” He too turns to the forge, interested in watching the process. “Should I duplicate myself, will the weapon duplicate as well? A copy of myself sharing my soul, as I occupy two locations at once, not the imitations currently responsible for my business and machinations.” “I was unaware that your podcast was monetized, but it gave a summary of the recent happenings here each episode. Usually it is about every fifty pages, but it has now been over two hundred fifty since the last. My Author can create Meat the Minstrel or some such nonsense to assist with the backlog.” Rebus shakes his head. “No. It is like saying that a safe is reinforced against being beaten in by a hammer, melted to slag by fire, removed from the small holes in the room, or damaged by pliers. If you take those things and forge yourself lockpicks, then you can break the safe open.” The Rebus clone that had been talking to the wind scowls at the now-immobile air, then pulls up screens to try to determine what the wind had been.

    That’s fine. I think you’d posted something a few minutes before I pinged you, which was why I did so. Rebus smiles back. “Excellent. I look forward to seeing your work, but first, I have a question. Could you use a specific portion of my soul to make the weapon, without changing its function? I’ve been suppressing a few personality traits, which I would be better off without: impatience and bitterness. Even if it would modify the weapon, perhaps one of those two would improve it.” Should Rebus have had his soul, he would have nipped this in the bud. But his simulation doesn’t know of the rabbits and their hunger, nor have the ability to read the rabbit’s mind, so he ignores it. Kion follows the others, words of power on his lips. “I will attempt to carry Moni - you need your hands free to fight.”

    You get it. Unfortunately, a series of coincidences only allow you to use it once, so you know how awesome it is but can never find the time to do it again. I wish anything I imagined became real.

    Rebus nods back, then continues to stand there. “Do the rest of you need a similar detox, in case you were touched by the weapon?” @NameIess, in case you have not yet seen this.

    Basically you ignore some of the most important laws of physics and pretend you aren’t potentially causing time paradoxes, so you can have your character go to more then three star systems in their lifetimes without dying of old age. There are some plausible ways to do it, or you can just pretend it works somehow and call it a day.

    Hmm. So do the aliens have FTL and won’t share, or are they here with a generation ship? That’s pretty important, considering half our characters so far are alien.

    The important decision is whether we want FTL to work; the others mostly establish tone unless you apply very rigorous science, then most of them become very potent.

    Rebus smiles back, and the ball of toxins evaporates, stored and put to use by the nanomachines. Soullessness reducing his initiative, he clasps his hands behind his back and waits for something relevant to him to happen. I’m gonna be off for at least a while, maybe for tonight.

    He nods, then indicates to the levitating ball of toxins. “The poison is right here. Do you want it, as a souvenir?” There’s really no reason to put that here. If you’d like to join the RP, you can, but your new topic is automatically displayed in several parts of the shard, and doesn’t need any additional advertisement.

    Do we have a tech level? I assume I cannot do any Rebus-style shenanigans, but I would like to know if we want things like energy weapons, FTL, force fields, human-level AI, and other advanced technologies.

    Nanomachines carrying toxins squeeze back out of Cricket’s pores. Rebus has them gather the substances in a ball, held together by one layer. “I am done. Your body now contains fewer contaminants than it has since before you were born.” He smiles.

    Rebus shrugs again. “I’ll learn the long story once my soul comes back. If you ever need my help, you can call me.” @xinoehp512 Rebus nods to Bacon. “Hello. I trust you are doing well. How is your podcast going?”

    He shrugs. “I thought it might be useful, both for the item and the lesson.” Rebus nods, though Cricket cannot see it. The nanomachines begin categorizing and extracting contaminants. The process would take around 45 seconds. It’s up to you if this works for the poison (if it’s mundane, it should. If it’s magic, I’m not sure). It’ll improve Cricket’s health too, removing any toxic buildup of normal chemicals. Rebus raises an eyebrow. “What did you three do to attract this many assassins, anyway?” Rebus sighs. “I will take my leave then. Perhaps your temptation will work better next time.” Wait, is Bacon with Tam, Bat, and Cricket?

    Rebus sends a screen over with a thought, displaying the rough positions of the nanomachines and giving more detail when clicked. He shakes his head. “It really depends upon a number of factors. The most important is the plot; I can’t fix it if your Author doesn’t want it fixed.” The nanomachines reach his bloodstream and begin removing anything but Nullite that does not appear in ordinary human blood. “I’m not here, technically. The Dreamsmith requires your entire soul.” Rebus blinks. “What?”

    Rebus would have been offended if he had his soul, but he didn’t, so he wasn’t. He pulls up several holographic screens for the benefit of the others, and a cloud of nanomachines surround Cricket and begin to enter his body through pores. They’re almost imperceptible as they work their way farther through.

    Rebus smiles. “I can do that. I was worried you’d need my soul.” He turns to Cricket (@Ookla the Irreplaceable). “I’m going to molecularly detoxify you with nanomachines. Even background Ennulling stops them from transmitting, so I’ll need you to trust me and try not to Ennull.”
