  1. “I use this place to practice things - I usually have more clones in here than I do outside.” The bird landed on her shoulder, and the tattoo ink forcibly tore out of her skin. I’m out of time.
  2. “It can’t read your mind unless you have a cybernetic interface,” Rebus noted, creating the desired chair for her. It looked rather out of place in the starscape. “Since I experience the world through text, it doesn’t matter to me most of the time - usually, it’s not mentioned. But if I were to consider what feels at home to me, I’d probably end up with something like this.” The surroundings changed again, becoming sleek and technological, sections of greyscale colors with lines of neon light moving around the edges. Quiet techno - or perhaps a related genre, as Rebus’s Author wasn’t very familiar with the distinctions - played from nowhere, just as the room was brighter than it should have been. The space was clearly doing something, but it seemed more to provide a sense of movement than to actually serve a function. Tam nodded. I think it has something to do with the powers Bat has. Then her eyes widened with alarm, and she made the bird fly into the air again. “I do still need some sort of legacy, but that option is certainly not it.”
  3. Rebus grinned, and flicked his wrist upwards. Two chairs, visible as nebula-like structures, formed from the ground. “This place can be almost anything I want it to be.” Just you two. I don’t know why. “I can see how it would be a problem, I suppose. Maybe I can simply have someone - you, honestly - manage my projects while I’m frozen.”
  4. “As would I.” The wall moved where she pointed it, intuitively interpreting her gestures. Rebus smiled. “I live down here - it takes my specific permission to get to this level, though the city above reaches into a similar layer.” He clapped his hands, and the ambient light went out, revealing what appeared to be stars in all directions. Tam nodded. It requires- -and either you or Bat. So I need you to come with me. “I’ve come to a similar conclusion, though perhaps if my Author takes a leave of absence - probably for camp - I will see if I can get another Author deputized to write me.”
  5. “Who’s Utility? I can feel afraid, unlike my cousins, but I think you’re confused about the types of fear. What you just caused is startlement - it’s fairly amusing without being mean, and is the feeling of brief alarm when the fight or flight response is triggered (for me, that causes the springs to go off) by an unexpected occurrence. Worry is another type of fear, but it’s not funny. Panic is similar, but more intense and in-the-moment. It’s also not funny. “If your goal is amusement from other’s displeasure, what you want to induce is paranoia, followed by brief startlement. You want your target to know you’re there, but not what you are or where. Move things when they aren’t looking, cause strange noises, maybe even shut the lights off. The first few times, simply make sure you aren’t seen. Then, when they get really scared, get behind them and tap them on the shoulder, try not to get punched, and then lessen the emotional effect through showing it was a prank while taking pleasure from their amplified fear.” He paused. “I probably shouldn’t have told you that; now you’re going to torment someone.” The wall felt like metal, but then it rippled, moving in the direction her hands were trailing and leaving behind a gap. “It isn’t your fault, and although my Author made yet another new character, enough plotlines still existed for me to interfere with a different one.” Tam continued speaking in fragments, time skipping every time she tried to explain. It was- -won’t let- -trade- -kill you- -ritual- -takeover- -up. Rebus sighed. “I can’t seem to find another alternative, no matter what Desolation seems to believe. I suppose you could try to bring back the existence of communal characters, but that typically destroys characterization and thus your mind.”
  6. He has already done the thing - RAFO (if you have a further guess, you should PM me, since I would like to keep the surprises surprises).
  7. Yes, that's part of it - it did work briefly, too, but then I was bored. But Rebus has also been choosing his words very carefully.
  8. So you noticed what he's doing? Rebus nodded, watching Narratively and ready to intervene.
  9. Yeah, but where is he? Eh, who cares. Bracken came out of the ship with a toolbox and some spare clothes, fairly bewildered.
  10. "Yes. As a quest, I would recommend searching for the Plotblade Motivation, which I have heard rumors of - if you bring it to me, I can give you a favor and help you further. As for a way to differentiate yourself from Cricket, you could either get a unique ability, or think through your mindset further, so you act differently. I can assist with both."
  11. Yeah, I read that much, but what should Bracken be doing when he gets the announcement?
  12. "Good. You wanted a task, to help you stay alive. You also need a gimmick - otherwise, the second Cricket comes back you will be overshadowed. I can supply both."
  13. Uh... I haven't been very attentive - where should Bracken have ended up?
  14. Rebus returned the gesture, smiling. "Thank you. I know of you, and I have met your brother and Author. You'll need to pay attention if you want my help, though - are you willing to do that?" Welcome back! Rebus smiled. "Excellent. Your Author does make things more interesting - it nearly killed me when she disappeared, actually." They were in a small room, now, shiny chrome and effectively featureless. Tam gritted her teeth. He got you. Did you- the world skipped a moment, Tam snapping to a new position. -to him?
  15. Rebus, who was not Utility, came through a door. “I believe Utility is for the moment inactive. You may call me Rebus; may I have your name?”
  16. “I was startled, yes, though not fearful. The qualifier of robot is unnecessary, especially considering I am technically an automaton.”
  17. Jack figured that wasn’t too much of a problem - some of his skin was missing, after all. More injuries to either of them would likely be problematic, but she looked fine at the moment. Having concluded there wasn’t a medical emergency, Jack shakily got to his feet, quiet sounds of gears and springs audible as he moved. “Do you often sneak up on innocent passerby’s?”
  18. Rebus was almost annoyed, but Stone’s thoughts were funny enough to balance it out. “Thank you for your time,” he told the random passerby, and walked away.
  19. A man in a lab coat - Rebus, of course - caught his eye briefly, though he was talking to another passerby.
  20. Utility would probably find further developments even more excessive, then. Rebus, interested, resolved to send some villains his way, or at least speak with him - Stone would likely have an interesting point of view.
  21. Jack looked up at her. “Who are you?” It is perhaps relevant to note that his face was made of metal. In fact, all his skin was made of metal of several types, with some gaps showing visible gears. He did look fairly human, and his confusion and mild panic was evident on his face. @Through The Living Glass
  22. Jack, startled, jumped into the air. This was not a normal jump, however. In a split second, he had leap around ten feet upwards, flailing his arms in the air before landing in a heap with a loud clang.
  23. Sure. @echo74 When you find him, here’s a description (operating under the assumption you’re sneaking up on him and thus won’t see his face): A young man, either in his late teens or early twenties, walked down the street. He wore a dark brown top hat and suit, and was walking oddly - perhaps it fit wrong.
  24. If I interpreted you correctly, you said that a new character I made could be introduced through them sneaking up on him (he will literally jump ten feet in the air, it’ll be great).
