    Will spent that time reading the book he had been given and trying to build something capable of computation out of random objects. It didn’t work great, though by knocking stuff over he was able to get an error-prone half-adder.

    There was cherry cola, in fact. The zombies had started holding the shields up, and when she hit one the laser beam was reflected - luckily for her - at an angle. Rebus’s notes would not have been of much help to the man, though the paper did contain most of the process. Instead, when Mr. Whitlock came back, one of the torches teleported in front of him, an unstable Prismite crystal leaking the required Narration to keep it “burning”. Rebus took a torch off the wall - it would appear to be simply to give light, but could be used as a weapon if needed. Unless he wanted to risk getting cut in half by a teleporting door, there would be nowhere to run, so he waited calmly, smiling slightly. He also noticed he was slightly cold - something that he had not truly felt in a long time. Alrighty, baseline human. Yup, for the same reason Rebus is. “I know exactly why that is - I had thought you were guessing.” Now that Bacon’s wording was unambiguous as to its target, he could feel the Narration take hold. But nothing happened.

    Alright - a potential balancing factor we can use for Puzzle is antimatter constraints. Sure, she can break the sound barrier, but if it takes half the power she has, it'll need to be a last resort (Rebus, on the other hand, could do it all the time because he cheats and summons antimatter with magic). I'll have to think about relative power consumption, but the cloning, teleporting, grey goo, and high-energy weapons should all be limited by her energy sources. Maybe by the end (when other people are also buffed or have alliances), she'll be able to find something with the required energy levels, but honestly giving out a Wand of Antimatter Conjuring has exactly the problems one would expect.

    There were lots of drinks, and now two comfortable chairs. The zombie’s head vaporized, and it fell over dead and dissolved. But there were more shield zombies appearing. Rebus, assuming Mr. Whitlock was simply going to perform work somewhere that would not threaten his house, did not interfere. The ingots could not be trapped without altering their properties, but that did not mean he was incapable of interfering if it was needed. Rebus took a quick inventory of himself - his nanomachines were either shut down or absent, his telepathy and Narration were gone, and even the emergency weapons he- he cut off the thought before he revealed all his contingencies. Is he still enhanced with nanomachines, or are even benign things identified as weapons and deactivated? Nice - I’m sure it’ll turn out great. Alright. (Ooh, fun) Thank you, and thank you. Shambling figures were rising out of the ground and moving towards him. The “zombies” didn’t have any weapons, and they were abstract enough that they didn’t trigger the Savior Complex compulsion.

    “I think you’ll find directing things at me is more difficult than you’d think.” People were beginning to leave the party, since Rebus had declared it over (and because withergeists had attacked). The zombies disappeared, and some drinks rose out of the floor. A wall dissolved, and Shoe moved towards her - or perhaps she moved towards Shoe - as the floor shifted. “The endurance test is over - you have a few minutes to rest,” Rebus said from all around. The laser was quite effective, clearing the zombies with very little effort. After a few minutes, though, one zombie appeared with a polished shield. “Good. I shall return.” Rebus then disappeared, leaving behind a teleporter so he could come back, or get Mr. Whitlock any needed supplies. Rebus sent Lady Bug the core section of his soul. Wow. I wish I could draw like that… (too weird would be a problem, but it didn’t occur. Too hot would be less of a problem, considering that Rebus can choose how he looks) I think canonically Rebus needs glasses if his technology is shut off - they look good, though I’m not sure they fit with the image he’s trying to create (if he wasn’t trying to be villainous and larger-than-life, he would wear them). Relatedly, his posture there matches either completely comfortable and not feeling a need to pretend, or luring people into a false sense of security. During the Dr. Rebus plot he’d basically appear exactly as he is there, but right now he’d be more confident - coat or cape more open so it can billow dramatically, hands out of his pockets so he can bask in applause and attention (not sure how to describe that posture better), and either standing straight with his head back or lounging against something. Color scheme is mainly greyscale, with accents of either orange, purple, or green. There’s usually black, grey, and white patches arranged to look dynamic - going longways, with diagonal boundaries between them. The teleporters (and most other small devices he has) are sleek and futuristic - some of the devices (the portal gun and turrets, namely) in Portal are pretty close, though they’d be in Rebus’s color scheme. Rebus’s eyes are orange, as might be expected. Gear he’d definitely have is pretty much just a teleporter and a laser - everything else can be done by utility fog, or can wait for the utility fog to construct it. (Utility fog itself is basically invisible, though Rebus often has it light up when he’s showing off.) When the zombies eventually caught him, they dissolved and a wall opened, revealing a similarly tired Beosta. (See above) Yup. Rebus wanted to test each person’s combat ability individually, so they’re in different arenas.

    Will repeated the past two days worth of numbers, getting them mostly right, then memorized the new set.

    Rebus resolved to investigate Livetha’s capabilities further. Perhaps strength training for the stoat would allow Beosta to draw more power through the bond. Zombies began to break through, trying to drag her to the ground. “I’m convinced true stability is impossible with the reaction, though prolonging the metastability definitely is. My initial goal was to engineer a small ‘pilot light’ that consumes only small amounts of Nullite, but can scale up quickly when given the required materials - but take this in whatever direction you think is best.” Rebus coalesced a large pile of copper ingots, teleporting the material from what was left of that planet he’d destroyed. They kept coming - though Rebus set a timer for the maximum they would continue. Very well. I shall deny that piece of me Narration completely - and Thread Awareness, if you wish. I shall accept your ability to remove me, but that shall not prevent me from returning.

    Rebus looked at the crystal Symbol had left behind, and gingerly closed his hand over it. There was a glow of Narration, and something in his expression shifted, hardened. He wrapped the contents of his hand in his tie, and placed it in the hand of an old security construct. “Alright, party’s over!” he called, “Clear out, or you’ll be considered volunteers!” Rebus, watching from outside the arena, noted down that Shoe would need help internalizing his ability to Ennull. Assume he can still do that… Yup. I wonder if there’s a way to avoid it, other than simply copying everything I write before I post it. See Rebus above. The crossblade did, in fact, hurt the zombies - and so, of course, did the fists. “That’s nice.” Rebus explained that Chaotic Order, when nearby Nullite and Prismite (or raw Narration), would make those two materials combine instead of repelling each other. This process expelled light from the Prismite, and made darkness around the Nullite, allowing the remaining components to combine into more Chaotic Order. The Chaotic Order, in turn, would soon decay, causing formation of structure or randomness in the surrounding area. In the meantime, though, it could be used to make more of itself and to influence emergence. Rebus likened it to fire - Narration served as air, Nullite as fuel, light and darkness as firelight, Chaotic Order as flames themselves, the emergence as heat, and the ambient order and chaos as smoke. Rebus waited for Rose to begin fighting the figures shambling towards her. That is a difficult thing to do. I shall give you one chance to accept my offer of my core personality in your experiment - allowing me to be with Symbol - and otherwise I shall do what I find necessary.

    That was the point, in fact. The zombies kept coming, occasionally reaching him - they were strong, and would hold on and try to drag him to the ground - until he either ran out of energy or used a new trick. “Well, what made you think your music would transform me specifically?” Rebus had thought they were a little smarter than that, but he supposed even the plan he’d had was ill-advised.

    “Thank you. Long term memory sequence, I assume, and then we’re done?” In the past, Will had been given a random list of numbers and words to remember for the next day.

    More and more ‘zombies’ swarmed him, clearly going to continue until he ran out of energy.

    “Project leader. I come up with an experiment and make next steps based on the data - they can even keep me in here if they’d like.”

    Several nearby things, including the small volcano, turned into squirrels. “See? It didn’t work.” Rebus was rather annoyed, though it seemed maybe that man was a Fallen and not a simple foolish withergeist bonder. He rounded on the closest withergeist, surrounding it with a translucent prison. In the center of the bars lay a portal to a star, though the heat and pressure was blocked by force fields, and the light was blocked by the bars - should they be damaged, the light would increase until the withergeist stopped trying or was incinerated. The two axes worked, but there were more and more zombies. Had the bodies not dissolved, he would probably be buried by this point.

    The “zombies” began to climb over them, walking over those of their fellows that had slipped on the muffin pile.

    They were fairly easy to cut through (though there was certainly some resistance), and dissolved back into the ground after a few moments. But there were more, coming up behind him, shambling towards him, appearing in the distance.

    Combat test - what were you expecting? You will be fine, though if you ‘lose’ limbs or eyes the simulator can make you unable to touch or see anything with that body part. The figures seemed zombie-like, shambling towards him in a group. There were a lot of them, though.

    Will leaned back in his chair. “Do you have any fun tests? Creativity, or actual problem solving? New experiments or something?”

    The storming shard ate my entire post this morning! Rebus teleported Beosta, Shoe, and presumably Cricket ( @TwinStorm) into vaguely liminal arenas - blurry walls seeming to slowly fade from existence - and gave them and Beosta this speech. “This room is made of nanomachines, and can’t really hurt you. Your test is to avoid dying as long as possible, though some phases will have other lose conditions. Begin.” Rebus was engulfed by the grey ground, and disappeared. Figures began forming from the ground, moving slowly closer. “I don’t know. Do you have one?” Rebus’s first project for him was a method for efficiently maintaining and growing the Chaotic Order reaction, with early prototypes looking like engine designs. He also gave Mr. Whitlock his notes on Nullite nanotech (supposedly magnets didn’t work right on them, which was why Heir thought the Eternal Mountain’s tech level was so weird) and Prismite isolation (he used this opportunity to tactfully state he was a Narrator). *comforting pat* Rose is above, by the way. Merely frustrated at being ignored - ironically in favor of myself. You haven’t felt real time, have you? That feeling may very well change your mind. But I am offering a willing test subject - me - if you let me be with Symbol. My baseline is what I can do, so there is truly no pressure. (I do not draw often, so I am not skilled) “Certainly - the attack hadn’t happened until after what I said was written. I’ve been wanting to examine a withergeist in detail - though you shouldn’t fear me attempting any sort of bond, given that I happen to live in the universe.” “I’m not sure you could.” Rebus didn’t care about the withergeists - Symbol and Sequence certainly had them handled. He moved forwards - breaking the sound barrier - and struck the man with the Chaotic Order torch. This is supposed to amplify the withergeist bond and corrupt the guy into a normal withergeist after a moment. He hasn’t tested it, though - generally the material amplifies the result of interactions between magic or people, causes emergent phenomena (abiogenesis, cancer, rainbows, problems), and facilitates combinations between things, including its own creation.

    Yeah! Cole is really fun, though I'm taking him from the past since without powers and disembodied voices he basically had no characterization. @Hoid Slayer, here's an additional character (Cole is above). I'm not sure how receptive the premise is to multiple characters (especially if only one person has them), but I had several ideas and figured you may want to choose.

    Wait, that's not Tam? There was a record scratch, and time rewound. "Yes?" Rebus asked. "Here, I'll teleport you two into arenas. You'll be close enough to think to each other, but it's far easier to test you two individually - though at some point I will see what you can do together." "I'm the piece in the box that has the music!" Rebus's Author still hadn't gotten around to writing how Rebus's experiments were going. That would change soon, hopefully. It's almost as though Heir and Haly were running a half-dozen plots at once! Rebus made this face at his Author: , but this did not make Heir change his mind about catching up in TLT, getting that Secret Wars character sheet up, and then going to bed. I've been experimenting, and there is always Chaotic Darkness. Or simply messing up every plotline you start until you are abandoned and forgotten. But I think this really was what Symbol wanted, even before - I would give up a copy of myself, to do with what you wish, if you would let me be with her. Yeah, if you don't have time or don't feel like you can (I know I certainly shut down everything I try writing at times), that's completely fine - basically do it if you think it'd be fun, otherwise don't. But the drawing is, as I said, really good.

    The Render pivoted back and forth, looking at the speaker with its vague face. “I would be best served by light and sharp. Obsidian, I hear, is very good at cutting.” Sounds good to me, though I’m unsure how often I will have cause to use it. Rebus, wearing sleek armor (greyscale color blocks, with purple tron lines) walked up to Sequence. He was smiling, but not nicely. “Yup. I’ll be fine, but I need to spin to talk, and the machine needs winding up to spin.” That was good for Rebus - actually, he thought that he’d tangentially mentioned it already. He brought up a hologram and began typing, though he didn’t have to. Rebus caught one, and stood motionless looking at it for quite some time. Rebus was happy about that - he’d set up the test momentarily. I, subsequently, would do my very best to destroy you. If she’s gone for good, I’m not even sure what lengths I would go to. Wow! That’s really good - I should practice my own drawing. You don’t have to, but I could use a non-AI image of Rebus. “Well, you become more of a squirrel than I would, I expect.” Rebus walked forwards. “You are meddling in forces few understand, and fewer should be messing with. Unfortunately for you, so have I.” He put out his hand, and with a bang of displaced air summoned a torch - patches of light and darkness dancing across the “flame”. Yessss? Rebus thought sweetly.

    Will sighed, since the scientist had just said he would have to use reactions if he wanted to change the temperature of something. Clearly they didn’t have much respect for consistency. But he still mixed together the potassium and iodine in an enclosed container, and began to heat it up.
