    This man gave up baking later that night, having discovered he could make a lot of money refusing to tell his story again until he was sufficiently compensated. After that experience, he was glad he could. Excellent. Let's find somewhere out of the way - a forest or mountain, perhaps - to begin. "I am quite familiar with the incredible potential the Notblades hold, both alone and together. And you forget my personal experience with Parasite. But power is counterproductive to someone trying to lose."

    That was considerate of him, though unfortunately it meant Zoomslug was part of the test and hence to be shot at by the figure with the crossbow.

    Rebus, who was watching the test from outside, raised an eyebrow. He'd never heard of Zoomslug, much less allowed the presumed tanix in, but that wasn't especially an issue. Perhaps there had been a few important things on the planet he'd destroyed after all.

    And Layke liked Invention, as he thought about it. It looked a rather spontaneous power, but it was also clever and willing to help. Layke could live with that influence.

    "You think I would care about the Notblades?" Lezterp appeared in a kitchen next to a very confused man, who was putting a tray of pretzels into the oven. "That's the problem. I think like he does, and he knows more than I do, which means anything I come up with he's already thought of and countered." This is not just a problem for Rebel - I can't think of a good way to beat Rebus, since I play him and therefore he thought of all the things I did. They passed right through the figure, but it was still an admirable effort.

    It's fine. The figure kept walking towards them, firing a few shots at Bacon. "When I asked of Authority, what did you think I meant? You are going up against two Authors, in part." Rebus shook his head. "I used to consider you a friend."

    "Do you have Authority over this? This is not your battle to fight - either truly cast your lot with Bat, or watch what happens when I face someone I don't want alive." Can we leave this place? My purpose is to create great works, both alluring and deadly. The greedy pay the price for there nature, while the good hearted - like you - are immune.

    "If that was vital - which it is not - would you expect me not to have a dead man's switch?" "Even wanting to understand me is not something many people will give." "I can." Rebus said with a grin. "You'll what?"

    “Creation is not an option. But Invention is close.” “That was one of my three other options. Cultivation is claimed, and Whimsy is probably not the best choice for me. Thank you two for making this easier. I shall see you when we are gods.” @KaladinsSenseOfHumorSpren, Layke walked into Invention’s Shardpool.

    Alright, I can start something. I’m usually a scepter, actually, but if I can touch an opponent I can tear out their soul. But combat isn’t really what I should be for. “Yes, that’s a good plan. How do we do it?” “Useless? You’re one of the only people who understands me.” Ah. Rebus smiled at Bat, and held up a cylinder with a red button on the end. “Do you know what this does? Killing you would be wrong and counterproductive, even though I could, but your family? Entire planets of innocents? They’re nothing in the eyes of the Authors.” I found this: Suddenly, pineapples. (Not by Bat and Rebus, though)

    I suppose. Make an interesting story? Do you have a plan for Lezterp? “I don’t need a sidekick. I need you.” Wait, aren’t the Notblades incorporeal? “Either way, we’d have to deal with his clones. He will switch at every opportunity.”

    “Creativity. Curiosity. Wondering. Thinking. I’d thought there would only be one, and yet…” Layke frowned, both from the dilemma and from residual guilt at their actions. “I need to pick one of them, I know that. But there’s several here that complement me - we need that, I think - when there was supposed to be one.”

    Layke looked at the fruit of their labors, scarcely believing it had worked. He had thought about this - he suspected they all had - and had come to a conclusion. He would take the curiosity of the being they had killed. And yet, of the powers he saw - truly saw, not merely the pools they appeared to be - the desire to create and know, to test and to wonder, had been split between many. This hadn’t been what he’d planned for. Layke blinked, looking around at his fellows already choosing pools. What was he to do?

    Rebel froze up for a moment, a pained expression on his face. “Fine.” I can store power for a little while, but I cannot return it. I don’t actually have full control over my own functioning. Rebus stayed next to her, though the snow they were sitting in was cold. He’s removed his soul from that clone of him, so nothing bad happens if he dies even through magic shenanigans. “Perhaps. But not right now.” Rebus launched a spear of utility fog at him, lighting it up purple. “Even now, I’m toying with you.” I could have sworn that I posted that… The figure with the crossbow slowed to a walk, striding inevitably towards the group while launching crossbow bolts at them.

    “That is a quite rational desire. If Nurgal wants the whole world, we shall come in to conflict, but an infinite half is perfectly fine.”

    “This world is infinite, so we could claim territory and never run out. Hence, it’s no loss to pool resources.” That made sense, but was still a problem. Hopefully it took a strike in order to truly plunge someone into a false reality. Yes. And you have natural power, unlike my previous wielder. The figure slowed to a slow, inevitable walk, shooting crossbow bolts at the three. “Yes.” Rebus said. “I constructed a role for myself - several - because of it.” Rebus smirked at him, catching the knife, and allowed the shrapnel to strike true (though he made sure there was no backwards connection to the rest of him). Most of it bounced off his armor, while some caused wounds that quickly knit shut. “You can’t beat me, Bat. I’m better than you at nearly everything.” Rebel was asking Atredies whether they should go after Rebus or the Plotblade, last time I checked. Actually, they might be there.

    Rebus considered crossbreeding it with the grey goo (or I guess tan goo, because it's weaponized), decided that was a terrible idea, and took a sample in case he changed his mind. "So, are you allow to know or tell me what Nurgal wants?" Rebus had been very careful not to allow himself to be struck - this was perhaps an issue.

    "In short, I'm carrying around four apocalypses. A fifth should not be an issue." Rebus continued attempting to study the plague infecting the underlings, in the hopes he would be given the results. That wasn't really how that worked, but Rebus didn't press the issue.

    Rebus had already been examining it with the nanomachines he kept in the air around him. "I think you're underestimating my resilience and ability to keep things contained. I have world eater machines, a gateway to a star, magical fuel sufficient to conjure planets, and enough antimatter to destroy a city block all currently on my person." Rebus returned the smile. Rebus blasted him away with a wave of utility fog, still smirking. Meanwhile, in the future, Rebus's emotional attacks were going awry. "Glass will hesitate to bring her back as long as I'm around. I said it was her fault, and it is, but I am the reason. Fight me." Rebus had been trying to determine what his applicants were skilled at before he gave them training. The footsteps suddenly stopped echoing around and became clearly audible as a cloaked figure with glowing red eyes and a crossbow rounded the corner at a dead run. "Are you here for emotional support?" Rebus asked, somewhat venomously. Rebus had had poor experiences with rabbits in the past. He skewered them with telescoping spears of utility fog, to nip a possible problem in the bud. I can use it to power the things I can already do at a faster rate.

    I can create treasure and traps around me, and consume most forms of magic. And I can make compulsions to possess items. “Against? I want to ally with Nurgal, not combat him.” The footsteps got faster, though they seemed to be receding. Rebus sat down next to her. Rebus smirked, shoving the Nullite back with his utility fog. “Finally.”

    I suppose you're the best person to possess me - I can't exactly turn myself off. Nope, just noting that I seem to be copying it (yeah, melodrama is probably a better descriptor). Hi offended, I'm Heir. "That, we have in common. That, we do not." Rebus grinned, unperturbed by the threats and wishing to see if the Plague Hand was unnerved easily.

    "My character has been judged in many ways, by those of many philosophies. Few would judge me virtuous, but I think one such as you might. What is your warning?" No, I'm not sure why Rebus is talking so weird. I guess I'm mimicking cult-speak.

    "I was, though I now consider the answers I've found final. Perhaps you can change that." If you'd want to have two plots with me at once, I would take you up on that offer. You're taking this strangely well. People who are actually affected by the compulsion I give off still try to get rid of me - I'd think you would want nothing to do with me.

    In short, Cursed Treasure. Take the One Ring as an example of what I do. "Eventually, yes. Predictive should, not commanding." Heir felt he should probably do the same, but Rebus disagreed. Rebus smiled at her. "Then we don't have to go. We can stay right here." "You really don't get it, do you?" Rebus smiled, eyes glittering. "That's the entire point."

    Somehow I missed these… “I do - though I do not claim to truly know all the capabilities of a god. In fact, there are limitations that even Nurgal should not be aware of.” They were in a spooky maze, with footsteps echoing from somewhere. As a fragment of Plot, I have power based on a particular story element. I’m also able to be bonded to, and can limitedly change my form. Alright, we’ve got Whan (mysterious ball of darkness nobody has yet determined the identity of), Jack (clockwork guy, looking for meaning in life - Bacon kinda left him outside the party), Sagerian (a guy with a book, trying to write interesting things), the turtle from a while ago (very large), or a new character. “Bat is here, but it’s been so long that my Author no longer remembered who I was talking to.” “I will. But that doesn’t mean either of us should be wandering around sulking.” “Thank you, Bat.” Rebus said. “Your pain contributes to your own survival and that of the Thread itself.” Blackout drunk, slung over Shoe’s shoulder in a spooky maze.
