The Longest Thread (Misadventures)
Through the Living Heir replied to ElephantEarwax's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Kion nods again. "I'm honestly shocked saying fashion worked as well as it did. It's a decent Focus, but not one I've ever used before." As Rebus's train leaves the station, it upgrades repeatedly, going from standard modern, to maglev, to outright frictionless levitating. He places teleporters at the doors to allow off any passengers wanting to go somewhere else, then smacks his forehead and simply teleports the front car into orbit around Antimatterland. The Render continues waiting to see if another train will arrive. Rebus checks the train schedule. "I don't want to do that train; I'm doing enough self-narrating already."- 111830 replies

The Longest Thread (Misadventures)
Through the Living Heir replied to ElephantEarwax's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Rebus adopts an innocent look. "I just put a fusion reactor in it, and threw in a couple other upgrades. It'll get you there faster, and won't pour a bunch of smoke into the sky. But if you don't want my help, I'll take it to Antimatterland instead, to see if I can borrow some trash." Kion glad to be back in his functional clothing, gets on the new train. "Thank you, both for bringing my normal clothes back and stopping him from messing with us. Do you just know when someone is a Narrator?" The Render keeps waiting for another train to come, and Rebus begins to wonder if he should take a detour to deal with that. Of course, Faunus seemed mad about him messing with the train system even a little.- 111830 replies

Rebus laughs, utility fog dispersing again into a superior battle distribution. "I'm not a fake conductor; I know what I'm doing. And I may not be wearing the right uniform, but it's certainly not out of style. Well, perhaps it may be. I've been looking at so many steampunk and medieval outfits I could have overshot. Regardless, it shouldn't be a bother. You won't even know I'm here, if you don't inspect the engine too closely." Kion pats around at his side for a second, then remembers he vanished his dagger for fashion purposes. "You Narrators really are everywhere! Why are you even here?" Rebus, not wanting to get drawn into a conversation with another of his Author's characters, doesn't answer. The Render continues to wait on the train tracks for another train to come by.- 111830 replies

The conductor, quickly collecting the utility fog around himself and then having it light up with the appearance of more typical clothing, shrugs. It was still a bit larger, after all; the first station had seemingly only contained one train line. He - that being Rebus of course - gets out of the front car. “Tickets, please!” he called, “next stop semi-featureless plain where new characters show up! Step after that a convenient location to escape tireless hunters and help people you didn’t make up! Step after that is blocked by the appearance of a very long wall, so that will be the end of the line!”- 111830 replies

Kion exits the train as well, looking around in slight awe at the much larger hub station. “Is it just me, or is this one newer? I’m not sure I’ve seen locomotives like that before.” Rebus smiles from the front car of an incoming train, manipulating the controls with utility fog while Narrating the station gradually more modern. Not that it would matter, of course. He was just bored, and high tech was such a nice aesthetic. The Render stands in the way of the train tracks originating from the desert station, waiting for a train it can stop.- 111830 replies

Kion turns towards her, determination in his eyes. “You’re right. I can still help people, and really, I have more time now than I ever have. At the next station, let’s get off and transfer to the ‘still away from the Render but also towards some people that need our help and existed beforehand because making up some people in crisis is morally dubious’ train.”- 111830 replies

The Longest Thread (Misadventures)
Through the Living Heir replied to ElephantEarwax's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
“It is a fulfilling life, but for one thing, I was reaching the end of it and having to teleport of evade the Render, and for another, with Narrators able to do the same things I can but without the threat of a Render attack, I doubt anyone not experiencing a crisis would harbor me. I would gladly go back to where I was and give my life to help people for another year or so, but here there isn’t the same system, and I don’t think people have the same problems.”- 111830 replies

Cole thinks. “Not really. There’s a bunch things I found around here, if you want them.” He takes a cloak off of the remains of Rage’s forces. “This one is a bit scorched too, now that I think about it.”

“I, like the other mages, helped those who needed to recover from disasters in exchange for the food and shelter needed to keep running. When nothing was needed, small groups of mages would research new focuses and test ways to escape Renders, leaving notes in the mage safe-houses as they traveled. My purpose was to give as much benefit to society before I was caught; I chose that path from the second spell I cast.”- 111830 replies

The Longest Thread (Misadventures)
Through the Living Heir replied to ElephantEarwax's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Kion continues looking off into the distance, but speaks softly. “I want to find a new purpose, if I can’t do what I once did. I suppose I was lucky, before, having a true idea of what I was supposed to do.” The Render reaches the train tracks, and is angry. So that was how the mage was escaping! Unable to outrun the train, it tears up rails and snaps them into metal fragments. It was known as a Render for a reason, after all. Taking the sharp pieces of twisted metal and forming them into a human-like shape with great bladed wings, it walks off, away from the mage. But that did not mean it had given up. It was still hunting, just in a different way.- 111830 replies

The Longest Thread (Misadventures)

Kion can barely fathom the amount of magic that would take - the number of words it would take them, and the number of spells and strengthening of the Render it would take him. He doesn’t know, of course, how vaguely a Narrator can describe a world when creating it. “Thank you disembodied voice. That makes me feel so much better.” he says sarcastically. Not really knowing how to use the time, Kion looks out the window, keeps thinking about his place in the world, and worries about the Render.- 111830 replies

“No, then you would be even worse!” “I understand some of how Narration is, probably more than most non-Narrators, and I know I’m being irrational. I just - I don’t know. I’ve just been essentially replaced by people who would be incredibly irresponsible if their magic - their words - worked the same way as mine, and I haven’t really had time to process it, so I’m not taking it great. Talking is helping, though. This would have gone much worse if I hadn’t been able to talk about it.”- 111830 replies

Through the Living Heir replied to ElephantEarwax's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
“I know you do help people, but that makes me feel almost worse. I shouldn’t, but the Narrators being able to help everyone, then spending their magic on whatever they want? That’s contrary to everything I know. Where I’m from, you don’t use magic frivolously. Period. It literally hastens your death and potentially that of others. So to see Narrators doing whatever they want? It makes me feel that they’re incredibly irresponsible and treat lives as cheap. That they also legitimately have reason to be the way they are, and do create benefit for society? That makes me feel worse - jealous, useless, and judgmental all at once.”- 111830 replies

“I still mean that Narrators in general feel like they’re everywhere - that they appear and do things at every moment. The frivolous ones, especially; they don’t even use their incredible magic to help others! No, they use it make sandwich conga lines and turn people’s feet to fish.” Kion calms himself down. “How do you do this, turning words around so well?”- 111830 replies

Rebus appears somewhere near whoever your character is, now decked out in a futuristic outfit. “Really, who needs a plot?” Kion turns to respond and realizes he’s disappeared. “I suppose that makes sense. No matter what there are things you cannot do.” he says to air (and also Faunus, but it’s not directed to her). @Ookla the Dylsxic “I know I can do some things, but they’re not the same things, anymore. Conjuring food in a famine, rebuilding houses after earthquakes, trying to accumulate scientific knowledge to help others? Those are all things that I was willing to die for, but now that I don’t have too? Now that I honestly cannot compete with others helping people? I don’t know if I should, especially if the Render rampages through a town while I’m trying to help them.”- 111830 replies

Kion’s brow furrows. “I don’t remember, actually. I was talking about how the world still seemed real, even though I saw the words for a few seconds, and then Faunus ran enough verbal rings around me that I forgot what I was doing.”- 111830 replies

Kion rounds on him, annoyance in his voice. “I know non-Narrators can do things, but I’m a mage! I’m a worse version of a Narrator that fuels a monster hunting me all the time every time I cast spells.”- 111830 replies

In that case, Cole simply flies into the air, then attempts to slow air down around Retlen instead of vibrating it. “What do you mean? Are you powering him as well? I could take away his air, in that case.”

Kion almost resolves to just stop talking to prevent further word-twisting, but is saved by Hacob. “See! Narrators just showing up out of nowhere! If at any moment they can do that, why would anyone need me? And if nobody needs me, I don’t have any reason to do anything, because at any moment my Render could show up and ruin anything I might do when I’m not needed.”- 111830 replies

As Rebus becomes shorter than himself, he shrinks down infinitely, then undoes the Narration and returns to being a poorly described Narrator, rather than a recursively described one. "You might want to check for ambiguities I can mess with before you try tricks like that."- 111830 replies

Cole jumps into the air, throwing things - including the grit cloud - at the ceiling in an attempt to collapse it and reach the sky. "Yes, I noticed. The blast of flame gave it away." Blood is running down his face, though not much of it yet.

Cole comes in and, shrouded in his cloud of grit, cuts off the guard's head while doing his best to make it unrecognizable. Once he's sure that his ruse won't be discovered, he shouts "I have killed the duke, winning myself and my companions a pardon for the frankly unreasonable charges of being heretics! Stand down!"
