    That's how the powers get ignored - Narrators and Ennullers can fully no-sell you, and many beloved characters have plot armor. (I was honestly including Rebus in the people who get their god-like powers ignored. He is a Narrator, but he's been holding back because he's really overpowered anyway. Though I try to have the least plot armor for my characters as possible, though they're strong enough it's hard to get in a position to kill them.) The Buffet Gang isn't the largest plot, though it is the fastest and thus potentially most relevant. It only has 2 to 5 Authors involved at once, while I think the trial has dozens of less active Authors involved. Template looks at the newcomer from the corner, then back at Lady Bug (@Halcyon The Only). "See! I told you this wasn't underwater. That would be strange."

    Template nods. "I will remember that." Certainly! Effectively any character is valid, though a Mary Sue will typically have their god-like powers ignored. Controlling other people's characters without asking is frowned upon. As for context, there's a bunch of people called Narrators who regularly break the fourth wall and can alter reality. Several of them will probably appear to talk to your character and answer any questions. The largest plot right now involves a trial against someone who stole two magic weapons called Plotblades, but you don't really need to know that to join. Just show up and have your character be around as confused as you are.

    Template looks confused and no longer nautical. “This is land, I thought. Are there underwater sandwiches?”

    Veer rounds a corner, runs down the hallway, and stops at the next corner. The attackers were behind it.

    I’m interested, though I can’t guarantee how much time I can and do devote to the project. One scene idea I had is for the viewpoint character to be first learning magic, guided by a mentor character.

    Template tries to squeeze the ground with the few remaining tentacles. Rebus nods thoughtfully. “Yes. That is what I want - so I can get what I want. What do you want?” Rebus grins. “Did you hear that the stolen Plotblades seemingly have not been returned?”

    JAMES, if I recall correctly. He’d have internet connection, and could probably brute force or spoof at least a portion of the security system. The blueprints might help find the teleporter.

    Template nods, less dolphin-like than before. “Good to know. There is probably someone who can help you. I have not been here long.” Template’s shell becomes gold. “Everything is meaningless. What should I do, then?” Rebus watches the fight, but it’s over before his Author returns. He grits his teeth, but returns to his projects. The beacons would tell him if he was wanted.

    Rebus nods at the feeling, then waits. Template, currently a rock-dolphin-squid thing, is there. “Hello. I am Template.” Unfortunately I have to get on another plane, so Template will be a bit unresponsive. Template waves. “Can I have all the money in the world too?”

    Rebus, back in his moon, shrugs. “That’s understandable. Nobody did accept my invitations, either.” He attends to his plans and foreshadowing, the other copies of him doing the same. One frowns at a screen. “Our Author made a mistake. We still need Onyx, but Omen is a different person.” Rebus sends out his desire to find the Dreamsmith, though he knows his Author will be on a plane flight for the near future. @NameIess

    Rebus looks back, unfazed. “Good. You can see, it seems. I wish you luck once again, though I suspect it will not be very helpful. And once again, I apologize that this happened to you.” Before he gets into the water, Rebus constructs a small device and hands it to him. “This is a teleportation beacon. If you need me, pull it apart and twist; I’ll be sent a message. It should be effectively indestructible, but if you do somehow break it, it will probably explode. Farewell.” He blows apart into utility fog, though that does wait for a response.

    She sighs. “I hope you’re wrong about that.”

    Rebus’s mouth twitches. “I wish you luck. I would give you more assistance, but you’re causing my nanomachines to lose power. I’d like to avoid you destroying the containment field for a larger amount of antimatter.”

    Veer hears it, but is still several hallways away. He places his circlet on his head, ready for battle.

    Rebus sighs again. “I’m sorry. I failed, and you’ve paid the price. Who was the Narrator, so I can at least vindicate you?” He tries to bring in more nanomachines, to at least determine what is wrong. Maybe this no-longer-convenient person could actually be saved.

    Dr. Warren nods. “We’ll try to get you back to them.”

    He shrugs. "I have a few plans... The foreshadowing and conspiring should be first." Rebus sighs. "I don't think natural Ennullers are quite like this. If they are, they can probably Ennull the pain away."

    Rebus constructs another piece of paper, and a pencil. He hands them to the man. Well, Rebus did molecularly bond it to his cells, which was perhaps not the best decision. "I believe he did become an Ennuller. But it isn't all bad. He should have the power to save his family, and I didn't give you Ennuller powers, which I imagine you would not want."

    Rebus blinks. “You’re an Ennuller now, I think. You just cut off my ansible connection, which is impossible. Congratulations!” Just in case, he sets up several precautions if the man Ennulled something important. “You’re supposed to speak in reverse. Remove sound at different rates, so what’s left over is your voice.”

    Rebus smiles. “That sounds perfect.”

    Rebus grits his teeth. “Capital letters. It is the Nullite after all - he’s a broken Ennuller now.” The screens pop up again, and the nanomachines tear the Nullite back out, then put the convenient person’s body back the way it had been.

    Rebus looks alarmed. "That shouldn't hurt - what did I do wrong?" A ring of screens appears around him, and he troubleshoots, stopping the utility fog but leaving it where it was. He mutters to himself, wondering. "The Nullite? Maybe... The fog? It shouldn't do anything - just move through pores. Of course! The Author doesn't know that." Shutting down all but one screen, he leaves the Nullite in place, but prepares nanomachines to remove it. "Let's give it a second; it'll retcon, probably. We'll likely want a new control, if this one happens to be a disguised Narrator or mostly a Narrative construct. I don't want Bat in pain, but if my Author retcons, this could be useful."

    All that's visible is Nullite ink being lifted out of the bottle and dispersing into the air, eventually only visible as a slight darkness. The fog itself is also barely visible, catching beams of light like dust. The Convenient Person's skin looks a bit darker, but nowhere near the level of the tattoos. Using the edges of the paper experiment, Rebus has figured out the most diffuse distribution that still blocks Narration. @NameIess
