    “Alright, hold on.” Rebus’s trolley dropped downwards, using something like the weapon he’d given her to drill through the ground. “I’ll open the gate, and then we can rescue those people.”

    Rebus ignored Nameless’s disparaging remarks. “I was going to feed his power to you.” Rebel nodded. “It was pretty strange - I guess that’s what I get for going there after dark. But if you need to bring me somewhere, I understand.” He also coiled a cloud of invisible utility fog around the man, to kill him at a moment’s notice. Rebus turned fast, making it through a corner as a wave of liquid rock suddenly filled up the wall in front of him. “There’s someone messing with the cavern’s layout. Lots of bubbles - probably with people inside - are going down. Is there a power source down there?”

    “He’s still alive, actually. Halfway through fighting me, but his Author asked me to kill him, so…” “I woke up in an ally without half my wares. I have no idea.” Rebus helped her up onto the trolley, then, frankly lost, went down a random tunnel.

    Rebus began to laugh. “You failed, you know. The most important failure you could make. You stopped making your Author like you.” Rebus hopped on his trolly, balancing on top of it. “Alright, then, come on!”

    Rebus smiled at the chaos that was unfolding in the caverns, then remembered he was supposed to be rescuing them. @Halcyon The Only, Rebus looked to the scientist-person. “Is there stairs or an overhang? We need to get to the main power generation, and find as many people as we can along the way! I can evacuate them to the space station, where we’ll have combat drones and power armor we can slap some Nullite paint on.” His shoes were suddenly swarming with nanites, much more densely than the air could place quickly. And then, unrelatedly, Rebus grabbed his throat.

    Rebus thought for a moment. “Utility.” Then he handed Utility a teleporter, and his Author went to sleep.

    “You don’t, no. But surviving is more useful than not surviving, is it not? Also, it’s difficult to refer to people with no name.”

    “Nobody has given me a concise name for it, actually - it’s an underground city full of people terrified of Narrators. Before you go, though, I want to give you some tricks to help you succeed. For one, a name will make your Author have greater attachment to you, increasing your ability to survive.”

    “My name is Rebus, and I need someone to go on a rampage with magic.” “Speaking of which, we might want to get back to that in a moment. I found a Narrator who just lost his plot armor, so we’ll have some more power to work with.” “Admittedly, I am lost. What do you call this land?”

    I thought I responded, but I’ll do so again. Rebus smirked. “You just lost, and you haven’t noticed yet. Did you change your shoes since we last fought?” Rebus nodded to it. “Hello. I have a job for you, and some advice, if you want it.”

    Rebus teleported the vague person to a minimalistic room. “You need a name before you attack - it should protect you.”

    “Of course I won’t hurt people if I can’t help it - otherwise I would have done this the direct way and dropped a mountain on them to hurt Bat. But if I need to manipulate, hurt, kill, I will. No questions asked.” Rebus’s face was serious for a moment, then he smiled, almost sarcastically. “I don’t know if you’re still going to help me, but if not Artredies just lost his plot armor.”

    “I could. But I’d be a bad fake villain if I did. You don’t understand the point of this, but I do have alternatives. Do you know what this is?” He twirled a small metal cylinder between his fingers, a red button on one end.

    “You truly shouldn’t, but I try not to lie. If I do have to fight someone, I will minimize their pain. For instance, you just killed someone without a second thought, and you wouldn’t have cared because it was instant.”

    “Very well. It won’t hurt.” I think the hair was blue, and he wanted a sandwich.

    “Alright, I promise to avoid hurting anyone not hostile to me, and I won’t take your power - I’m already trying to get rid of mine, after all. Make your monster, give it Narration, and I’ll take it there. You and Bat can stay here and go find a nice waterfall.”

    I don’t know how to refer to them, actually. But a group of paranoid people who are immune to magic makes some pretty good employees. They’re pretty much the only city anyone cares about, anyway.

    We’re not terrorizing anyone; I’m just trying to cause a panic - clear an area.

    Meat fiddled with his bread and sandal boombox. Math and numbe- guess who’s back? Back again - guess who’s back? “You and music don’t always exist. I got a job.” Rebus appeared. “Sorry ‘bout that. You can lend a scary character some Narration, I suppose - I’ll send them there. I would do it, but you can notice power spikes.”

    Rebus moved the giant monster into the dream, so Tan could do things. It was still linked to fish-Bat, though.

    Well, Tam just agreed to attack the city after Rebus showed up looking rather urgent, and then she forgot about it went to sleep. Actually, probably some things Rebus could do with that.

    Rebus, since his previous “threat” had promptly forgotten to attack, gave giant fish Bat a real body above the caverns, which would do everything Bat did in the dream.

    He has some related plans. (Sandlocke can get some character development and replace him, potentially). Rebus teleported out of the way, swinging at Atredies again. “You just lost, you know.”
  25. DragonHeir
    “The drive to save everyone causes things to turn to ash and throw off black sparks? Somehow I doubt it.” Rebus took advantage of the distraction to make a lunging attack.
