    Jack was bewildered. “Well, I do hope you get your soul returned.” The construct had bolted during the brief confusion, leaping between several elevated platforms at a diagonal to her. Meanwhile, Rebus had cornered a construct and killed it - evidentially they were fairly unskilled in melee. “Yes. The portals that Cricket makes, if something is halfway through them when they close, can cut through nearly anything.” “Yes. I would provide you resources and direction in exchange for you taking out some immortals I don’t like, not harming my allies unless I tell you you can, and me getting partial credit for enabling your actions.” “I’ll break it down, as long as you wait till the end before making snap judgements or trying to kill me. Have you heard of the Plotblade Antagonist?”

    “Yeah. You have to come with me now or something.” The red ones did, the green don’t. A shield of green utility fog stopped the strike, though the Plotblade did punch through it. The construct leapt backwards, the shield blasting apart into a brief smokescreen. Did you miss the vision part? “Interesting… I may sponsor you, actually.”

    “That seems of questionable legality. You’re under arrest? That’s what they say in the penny dreadfuls, at least.” Jack was clearly out of his depth, but managed to pull off a serious face. Let’s see… round, bordered by white void, grey surfaces, black edges, white utility fog holding stuff up… lots of parkour stuff, like ramps, platforms, warped walls, a sectioned-off floor area that might be a trampoline, ropes from the ceiling, pits in the floor, hurdles, things to slide under… If Symbol tried certain gestures or verbal commands, she’d be able to make temporary structures as well. The green construct turned, then leapt forward, launched by a telescoping pillar of utility fog. It soared through the air, putting its momentum behind its blade in a downward strike. Meanwhile, Rebus blocked a spear of utility fog with one of his own, then performed a similar trick to Symbol’s opponent, kicking off of a well-placed wall to end up behind a construct. “Become this? I’m normal, basically - probably the closest to you. Rebus gave me some special forces training and the best enhancements he could without replacing anything, then basically told us we could do whatever as long as we’d fight against any truly Thread-ending threat. Does Cricket use portal cuts in your reality?” “Somehow I’m not convinced… it won’t be quite this second, but I have a few immortals I wouldn’t mind no longer needing to worry about. Is souls all you harvest?” Alright, see you tomorrow.

    “You do not seem to be a very nice person. How did you acquire a contract if you did not build the contracted?” In fact, this had been the plan all along. Green spikes of utility fog telescoped at Rebus, the branching support structures they were pushing off of glowing as well. Rebus jumped, pushing off of an orange platform to get higher than he should have, then knocking one of the spikes into the ground and briefly running across it. “If you don’t have anything better to do, you can pick me and find out.” She noted. This version of Rose was pacing slightly, or perhaps prowling, but stopped as Rose turned to her. “Do you need something?” “Ah. I do hope you have an end goal with this - souls are rather important for the continued functioning of magic, the mind, and the immune system.”

    Apparently my memory abnormally good and not just ordinarily good (though I think it’s a common trait of high-functioning Autism). My teacher wanted me to highlight passages from a reading “so you can find what you read”, and we had some brief mutual confusion. I wonder if someone neurotypical would be willing to come over here and explain how “normal” people think - it’s a qualia that is fairly hard to project to others who think differently.

    “Ah. I was released from mine once my father discovered I had emotions. Though if you are bound to him, he should cease manhandling you.” The red figure swept its sword towards her from above, seemingly uninterested in actually hitting her. Then several more figures materialized at the edges of the arena, one more red and several green. Rebus turned to face the green ones as they walked towards him. “The greens are faster and have some powers - they’ll fight me unless you engage them, and you can clap at any point to pause and make all the opponents fight me.” “Well, I have never had it. I’m supposed to represent you as helpless but peaceful, or something - I didn’t leave the city until Bat returned with Tam and Cricket. I fell in love with the latter, and the three work to protect our little beach village.” “I have a good number of nemesi - that’s exactly the role that needed filling. I suppose many of my enemies would be better thought of as rivals in various areas - perhaps you and I could reach a friendly rivalship, actually - but I do serve as a nemesis to Tam and Bat. I also believe there’s another Nemesis around - the Greek goddess.”

    Rebus, who had never left, shrugged. "Utility is telling the truth, though not all of it. I shall do the same - in fact, true lies are very bad for me. I began this for three reasons: I refuse to let Malevolence beat me, the Thread is overflowing with love plotlines and on-off villains that get killed after like ten pages, and my own self preservation, both because I need to be interesting, and because I live in the universe and would rather it not be conquered or stagnant. What I need to become is not necessarily a villain, but rather an antagonist. Admittedly, I'm probably also some manner of sociopath, but I've been taking steps to minimize actual harm while being all the more threatening and evil because of it." He smiled sweetly.

    “How? Why doesn’t she teleport away from you, then?” Jack would have winked, but he wasn’t sure how to turn off only one eye. Rebus switched it up, having the red figure move around more, first circling her then retreating up a ramp. “I dunno. Why do you have a sword?”

    “Teleportation? How would you do that?” A red outline appeared, moving at around the same pace she was. It attacked and blocked, speeding up as she did. Rebus gave technique advice as he watched. “I never had one.”

    Perhaps. He does have more emotions than the other models, which is why he’s on a journey of self-discovery in the first place. “How? She looks nothing like the carrier models - and also seems unwilling. We shall search for a new transportation method, so she does not have to.” Several possible swing and footwork patterns lit up in the air. “I suppose if you think I am weak, you can try to do better.”

    “My name is Jack. Why are you dragging this person through the street?” Well, he’s a clockwork automaton, so I’m not even sure if he has a soul. But he doesn’t really age except through physical wear. “It is, especially since precarious conditions are very dramatic.” “I’m Rose? Well, technically I’m a reflection.”

    Jack turned towards them warily, ready to leap away if needed. “What’s going on here?” - Rebus demonstrated a lunge, striking a target in the air. Glowing footprints on the floor appeared, so Symbol could do the same. “Footwork is one of the most important parts of fighting, especially with Plotblades and similar weapons - defending against one and attacking with one requires speed more than strength.” - This reflection was missing more than the tattoos. She also had no sword, and no laser. She didn’t look scared, but it was obvious that in a combat situation this version of her would be of no use.

    Jack conclude he had a literal screw loose. Hopefully there was a non-hallucination clockmaker around. Alright. “I’ll teach you.” Rebus said, smiling. He put out his hand, and a line of utility fog locked together and glowed orange, imitating a sword. “Let’s start with the basics - stance and footwork.” He stood sideways, holding his sword out, and an outline of blue in the air showed Symbol where to move to imitate him. The Nullite-tattooed Rose seemed on edge. The expression was familiar, somehow.

    You don't have to - I do have some enemies which may put the city in harms way.

    Yes, that is why I am commenting on it. Take as long as you need. Actually, I have a city inside a moon where they will never want for anything - you can offer them the opportunity to move there.

    Jack was still bewildered, but wasn't even sure what to say. "So, you want to be Spring-heeled Jack?" You're a good man, Stone. Seems like all you needed was a second chance. "Not necessarily. Have you really been in physical battles before?" That was understandable. The reflections were beginning to move on their own, now.

    Well, it was still somebody appearing out of nowhere. "Are you a clockwork engineer?"

    Rebus kept walking. He walked up some utility fog steps, and sat on a tree branch. Jack jumped into the air once again, startled by the disembodied voice. "Who would you be?"

    "Because I don't know how to remove them, much less attach them to someone else!"

    “Indeed. It makes up a large portion of the moon, followed by air, unmodified replicators, and specialized nanofactories. Would you care to spar?” Rebus had known that quite a large portion had fled during Utility’s attack, but was pretty sure he wouldn’t be able to do anything about that. The reflections changed further as she waited. The reflection in front of her became more toned and put together, like she spent all her time on working out and skincare, but her sleek, utilitarian clothes suggested otherwise. Actually, the outfit was almost a combat uniform - her laser from Rebus seemed to fit it perfectly, and she had an earpiece and wristpad. The tattoo-less reflection and the almost-normal one were in clothes she might wear, though they were a little off, suggesting slightly different mindsets. The last reflection, though, was far different. It’s what she’d look like as a Narrator, in full drunk-on-power, superiority-complex, and fictionality-identity-crisis mode. Not sure what that’d be, though. If you’re familiar with the allusion, much more than a wall will need patching. Rebus was walking somewhere.

    Rebus smiled. “Utility fog is a marvelous thing - it can do almost anything one might want. Airborne nanomachines that can move around, lock together, create light and sound, and even rearrange atoms and molecules. It allows the creation of almost anything, the pseudo-telekinesis and barriers, and more complicated tricks, but it also means that by combining the tricks, essentially anything can be created or simulated. Among other things, I use it to train. Observe.” The room briefly went dark again, and reformed into a minimalist arena, with a few platforms and pits scattered about. Rebus considered that a positive outcome for everyone involved, considering the circumstances. The mirror merely did the same thing she did, almost as if it wasn’t ready yet. I’ll be back. *drives car through wall*

    Rebus grinned. “Alright. Shall we stay and do a combat/mobility program, or visit somewhere else?” Rebus tried his best to make them feel at home, setting aside an area to reshape as they pleased while simultaneously attempting to build connection to them. He told anecdotes, helped with problems, and displayed technology, trying to acclimate them to Narrators - and him specifically. After several days, once he was sure enough would wish to stay he began making a list of those who didn’t. He brought that group back to the caverns, bringing some technology to help repair the damage, and leaving a powerful teleporter in case any wished to travel between them or another evacuation was needed. It couldn’t bring people to the city itself, of course - that would be a security risk. In one mirror, she had shimmering, prismatic tattoos. In another, they looked almost normal, but she was sure something was different. In the third, the Nullite tattoos were interlaced with grey ones, tron lines running through them. In the final mirror, she had no tattoos. Each reflections’ clothes also began to shift as she watched.

    That works, though you don’t have to. He’s not really wanting to do epic quests or anything (and anyway he’d effectively complete them all by himself), just to follow Symbol’s advice and have character moments. Jack sighed. “Because they are attached to my legs.”

    “They’re my feet. I guess you could call yourself Spring-heeled Jack if you wanted.”

    Jack jumped up into the air, landing on a room, then kept back down, his springs absorbing the landing and being locked back into his heels. “I’m not sure you understand how much effort it would take to be able to do this.” Rebus nodded. “I suppose I shall - both on my own and with you. There’s one more thing down here to show you, plus the outer defenses and a few more applications of the utility fog - I think that will soon become relevant, considering Tam, Bat, and Lady Bug are talking in spoiler boxes. We could stop at my main lab, interact with some people living here, do stuff down here, or go do something somewhere else. I wouldn’t want to burden your Author, but a summery of what the Cavernians did would potentially by helpful.” There were four mirrors, and they mirrored the gesture, though all but one still had tattoos. Alright. While we’re waiting on that, do you have a plotline idea you want a particular manipulative Narrator to interfere with? The corners of Rebus’s mouth turned up, a more sincere smile than the one he often displayed.
