  1. "Ope- there's the mini-map. That's kinda freaky."
  2. She took the bottle skeptically. "I'm trusting you." She downed a gulp and her face wrinkled. "Ugh, that's bitter!"
  3. "Something else - my doppelganger is mute, and now I'm *cough* temporarily *cough* blind. Just found that ironic and a little funny."
  4. "It's... It's nice." She turned her head to where she'd heard Jar Man's voice coming from and smiled sweetly. After a moment, she broke out laughing.
  5. "Not funny, just... With everyone in the clinic, I just... I feel more at home than I ever did... well, at home."
  6. Aventine kept laughing as well. This was the best she'd felt in a long while. She'd been at peace, sometimes even content, but this... This was the first time she'd felt truly happy for years.
  7. She laughed again, this time for real. "You gonna be my seeing-eye Jar Man while we're here?" "It's.... Okay, yeah. It's pretty bad."
  8. "But I think... As long as I don't see my father or his dealer, I think I'll be fine mentally."
  9. "Just..." She sighed. "I know this is a mirror of the Luthadel where I was raised - like, a doppelganger of an entire city, but... it's till really hard to be back here..."
  10. She nodded. She looked like she was about to say something, but decided against it.
  11. She nodded and wiped her wet eyes. "Thank you."
  12. "Just... try?" She held her tears back, though her eyes were still wetter than normal. "Please?"
  13. She laughed, but it was forced. "That's just the 20 second synopsis. The 'bathroom incident' was... it was a suicide attempt."
  14. Aventine took a deep breath and did her best to hold back her tears as she spoke. "My father was an addict, which is why I was supposed to be a Soother, but I was a Rioter, so he abused me and hired assassins trying to take me out. Eventually, he ran out of what his dealer wanted in exchange, so he..." She almost broke, and her voice began to shake. "So he sold me to him instead. That's... that's why I ran away from home."
  15. I really don't want to have to go through this again... Maybe he forgot? "Do you remember what I told you after... the, eh... bathroom incident?"
  16. "What would... what would it take to get you to stop?" Aventine asked, somewhere between submissive and scared.
  17. Follow this... strange compass thing, the presence said. I can explain a lot of things, but I have some questions of my own.
  18. It didn't take very long. It doesn't take a lot of work to recognize yourself.
  19. It stopped spinning suddenly, and TAAron worried for a moment that it had broken. But it gave of a very faint glow, and it exuded a familiar presence... but not Rue.
