  1. “We’re in the middle of planning how to trap Jar Man’s cult on a dead world. These people… they made him do really bad things. The things he’s told me about specifically, I don’t even want to repeat. But if we bound it to one of them, it would be stuck in that world forever.” Her voice changed, like she was being fed words out of an earpiece. “It’s impossible for anyone to die on that world now, so it would be bound to one person infinitely. No one else would have to suffer it after this one person.” Her voice went back to normal. “And if the Creator agrees to seal off that world, it will be absolutely impossible for it to leave it any other way.”
  2. “Tal, at least hear me out. Please.”
  3. “That sounded bad, didn’t it? But I wasn’t talking about just any person. You remember Jar Man, right?”
  4. The snap surprised her and her arm twitched for a moment. She focused her breathing to stay calm. “It wasn’t your fault. Do you have any idea as to how… it works? Whether it’s possible to pass it to someone else?”
  5. She wrapped her hands around his arms and put her mouth against them. “That shouldn’t be possible, should it?”
  6. “No, I don’t believe you have.”
  7. “Well, obviously, dummy.” She smiled and pecked his cheek back.
  8. “What do you know?” Her gaze was intent, and her hand squeezed Pic’s @Cash67
  9. Her eyebrows furrowed. “We’re fine. But what do you mean?”
  10. “Yeah, I think it’s been since the lunchroom. How are you?”
  11. “Don’t know. At least five minutes, I’m sure.”
  12. “Well, let’s find out.” She wrote back: Thank you for being willing to help. Our plan was to raid the cult’s base of operations first. According to my friend, there may be innocents involved. We’re bringing a “human lie detector” to figure out whether to trap them or not. We didn’t think about when the sigil would be removed. I’m guessing either on the dead world, or after we return from it. She sealed the missive and sent the crow on its way.
  13. “The one we sent with the message. It looks like it has a response.”
  14. Aventine woke up a couple hours later to a crow cawing and Pic’s looped music still going on. She leaned forward and rubbed her eye. The motion woke up Pic. “Oh, the bird’s back.” @Cash67
  15. Sometimes, while she slept, a quiet, hum-like sound left her mouth.
  16. She didn’t respond, though her breathing remained steady. When he moved his head to look at her face, her eyes were closed and she was smiling. Asleep.
  17. She blinked, trying to fight back her tears. She took deep breaths. Eventually they exactly aligned with the music. ”I love you too,” she whispered between two phrases.
  18. She leaned the back of her head against his chest. “Yeah. Maybe. I’ve just built my walls so high that it’s hard to tear them down for anyone. Feeling like I’m constantly on the verge of shattering, and like I’m already just a group of broken pieces barely being held together.”
  19. “Before I ran away from home, there were really only two people I cared about. One died the night I left, the other six years ago. They were both killed. It feels as if simply by caring for someone I’m dooming them to be killed.”
