He raised an eyebrow. “You paid for dinner and food, which I gave you.”
Jolane wasn’t there quite yet. She was out back, washing her laundry.
“You want breakfast?”
The gate was open.

Robert approached. “Is there anything I can get for you?”
After finishing with Niamh, Robert can over and said, “Even if you didn’t stay in a room, it’s ten schlaff per night.”
Jolane closed her door. Her breathing came quickly. She slowly drifted to the floor, her back on the door.
She’d probably just caused trouble for them and herself.
But they’d noticed her.
The room should have been a closet, honestly. There was a small stuffed animal on a mat on the floor, a few candles and matches, two sets of clothes, and a tiny window. And, of course, a girl frozen in fear.
