That evening...
Naise and Keryth's house was about the size of her parents' and, like theirs, it was near the edge of the village. The three dismounted, and Keryth tied the horses to a post. There was some hay and grass for them to graze on. Naise led her sister inside.
Jolane fiddled with the uncut red stone Roy had given her. Naise had made a curious expression seeing it, but she hadn't explained.
"There's a lot to do tomorrow since we've been gone for a couple days," Naise told her. "Let's get to bed early, then you can help tomorrow. If you want to, of course."
Jolane nodded. "Okay."
Naise sighed. "I know you're disappointed. But with people coming after them, it's not safe for you. We can't lose you again."
"I know.."
Naise hugged her, a hand on the base of Jolane's braid.
