  1. Kal smiled. He went to the bed with Pyre, but didn’t sleep for a while. He pulled a folded paper out of his pocket. He unfolded it twice and looked longingly at the picture it showed. The outdated photograph had four subjects, one of whom was Kal himself. It was clear from the angle that he was the one holding the camera. Sitting on his lap and smiling at the camera was a young girl with the same bright green eyes as her father, though her straight auburn hair was clearly her mother's. And the mother herself leaned against Kal, her smile extending up into her hazel eyes. In her lap rested a sleeping newborn baby boy with his father's dirty blond curls. He was maybe two months old, and both Kal and his wife had bags under their eyes that showed how tired they were. Kal sipped in a breath. He wiped the tears from his eyes and held the photo and the sleeping Pyre. @Ookla the Inconclusive
  2. Kal picked Pyre up and held him close to his chest. "Thank you."
  3. She pulled back but stayed on her knees. She felt humiliated. She'd rendered herself a tool, a slave. But she'd saved her life, and July's, and tried to save August. She'd likely pledged herself to a tyrant, yes. But at least she'd live.
  4. "I've been using you like personal therapy, trying to use you to replace the family I lost..."
  5. She let out a breath and crawled over, beginning to grovel. "Thank you, thank you..."
  6. "Will you allow me to say goodbye, at least?"
  7. She curled up tighter. "Please, my Lord..."
  8. He smiled, then his face fell and the petting stopped. "I'm sorry, Pyre."
  9. "My gift of prophecy- I will use it to insure that the throne is yours. I only ask that you spare August, July, and my lives- Even if you imprison them but spare them, my gift will be yours."
  10. She gasped. "I have a proposition!"
  11. "I just want to go home..."
  12. She gave up trying to be quiet. Sobs tore out of her. She held tightly the only thing valuable to her that she'd brought- a necklace. The charm was a simple white stone - quartz? granite? - and it was attached to a twine string tied around her neck. She remembered the dream she'd had two weeks prior. A glimpse of her family. Her parents still had that sadness in their eyes of their loss. Two small children were with them, a boy and a girl. Her real siblings... that she'd never met. And it seemed she'd never get a chance to.
  13. "January, please-" She was hysterical. "I-I-I just want t-to see my family again..."
  14. She fell to her knees, falling forward onto her elbows. Her shoulders shook, but she tried to keep her sobs quiet.
  15. She looked up, tears in her eyes and her mask gone. "Exile us. Take our power, our status, just please, not our lives."
  16. She looked down. "Please, don't kill him..."
