    “Yup,” Rue says. Tal smiled at him. “We’re here to help with whatever you need.”

    “Why is my friend sad?” Xi asks, forming arms and reaching to hug him. She goes right through. “Why can’t I give my friend a hug?”

    “Probably. You’ll get there, though.” “You could go to one of the restrooms,” Rue suggested. “Or the mess hall, or…pretty much anywhere with a sink.”

    Xi’s eyes slid closed, then popped open. Instead of their usual black, they were a dull gray. “Hello,” she said cheerfully. “Are you my friend?”

    Tal nodded. “That’s…a little more on the strange side. Do you have any hobbies besides books?”

    Xi doesn’t seem to notice. “Noise noise noise noise noise…”

    Tal turned and walked out of the library, shutting the doors behind him. “So,” he says conversationally, “do you remember how you got here?”

    Eddie blushed deeply. “This…boy. Oh, Lils, I can’t even describe him. He’s…perfect. I wish I could have brought him to meet you, you’d get along so well.”

    Rue followed after Nameless, looking…well, like she always did, but feeling oddly nervous. “Yup. Let’s go.”

    Xi floats towards it, still shivering.

    “Food is good,” Tal agreed. “Would you like me to take you to the mess hall, or do you think you can find it yourself?”

    Xi was shuddering, occasional blasts of fire shooting up to various heights.

    “Wherever you’ll take me,” Eddie said with a grin. “You and your friends,” she added, looking at Sage and Ezrium.

    Eddie smiled warmly at her. “Where do we go next?”

    “I’ve missed you,” Eddie whispered. “Thank you for making room for me in this new life of yours.”

    Eddie slumped to the floor and took a long, shuddering breath.

    “Oh, Lils…it’s okay. We don’t need to fight anymore.”

    “Welp,” Tal said. “He’s probably fine.”

    “It’s okay,” Eddie said, holding her tight. “It’s okay. It’s all okay and it will be okay. I’m here.”

    Eddie cocked her head. “Since…forever? Did Lils not tell you? I have gotten better at controlling it since I saw her last, but I’ve always had my fire.” She let it run through her hair, over her arms, let it form a thin, glowing circlet and a long dress. Eddie frowned, reaching and trying to wake Lilyana up.

    Xi looked around at the city wonderingly. “Big trees. Big big big trees! Very big trees. And friends! Friends are good, lots and lots of friends, yummy friends, friends are yummy, friends are nice, friends are happy, make friends because friends are will be yummy, yummy yummy in my tummy!”

    Eddie lit her hands on fire, keeping the air warm, and slowly started melting the ice. “Oh, Princess…it’s going to be okay. It’ll all be okay,” she murmured.
