  1. TAAron laughed, going slightly red himself from a strange combination of firsthand and secondhand embarrassment. "I was so awkward!" The healer chuckled. "Oh, come on. You don't do a very good job at hiding it." "Oh... I... Do you think she knows?" The scholar's expression was one of concern, apprehension, and embarrassment.
  2. TAAron smiled, some of his tension easing away. "I don't remember, exactly. I think maybe he was taking to you or someone else about something, and he wouldn't tell me what it was." "What!?" his younger self exclaimed, looking taken aback. Lerac raised his eyebrows, putting on a knowing smile. "You seem to care about her a lot." TAAron from the memory turned slightly red. "I don't know what you're talking about," he mumbled.
  3. The scene became a familiar one. A cliff overlooking a forest, near the Tower of Ghenjei. TAAron's younger self sat on a stone across from Lerac. This was back when he was dying. It was also back when Lerac had a habit of messing with people. TAAron listened in to the conversation as his former self spoke. "Why won't you tell me?" Dodging the question, Lerac asked his own. "How do you feel about Haly?" Looking back on this memory, TAAron could see his sly smile.
  4. Sandy set down his staff and leaned on it. It very easily drove a hole into the ground.
  5. He leaned back again, closing his eyes.
  6. He blinked. "Oh. Right. I think it's a consequence of my being the avatar of Death. That fire is his magical essence. I can heal it without really feeling the consequences, just like I can safely touch the dagger. It's... tiring, though."
  7. Lerac leaned back against the table leg, still sitting on the floor where she had propped him up before. He seemed tired.
  8. "I'll be fine. You just went through sometime traumatic. Another something traumatic. This one I know more about, at least. I can stay a little while."
  9. "Well, I'll wait here a bit longer before going."
  10. "Yeah. Are you sure there's nothing at all I can do?"
  11. Lerac waited there patiently with her.
  12. He looked over at her, seeming worried. "You don't have to tell me something is okay if it's not. I want to be here for you."
  13. "Well, you could call to them with your 'phone,' right?"
  14. "Don't ever do that, please. It could very easily kill you." He didn't sound angry, just concerned and solemn. "Do you need anything?" "I'm so sorry, Haly. I wish that I had remembered, that I had found you..."
  15. This time TAAron came with her right away, still holding her hand. He looked at the scene with shock. "What happened here?"
  16. He looked at her with concern, but eventually looked back at his past self. "I was trying to learn about that circle of Stacis crystal that Tristan gave me. Or about my world, once I realized I wasn't on it anymore. I never had much luck." The younger brain of TAAron was perhaps angrier than she'd ever seen him. With a furious yell, he swept the books off the desk and thew the circle across the room, where it hit a bookshelf and clattered to the floor. Then he sank down to his knees and cried. The present TAAron cringed at the outburst. The memory faded.
