  1. "Are you sure about this? I don't want you to put yourself into danger if you don't have to."
  2. Cedar nodded.
  3. "Rue." TAAron grabbed her shoulder, shaking her slightly.
  4. Tayen stumbled out of the building, body a charred mess that should have been long dead.
  5. As Helda died in his arms, Tayen tried very hard to remind himself that she was really in Limbo, alive. He let the now-empty body fall, and carefully kept his eyes away from it as he made his way out of the burning building. He didn't want to get sent ti Limbo himself yet, as someone would need to tell the people going after Helda what happened.
  6. He stroked her hair tenderly as they burned.
  7. He did not cry out. Go to limbo, now.
  8. He just held her tightly.
  9. It's okay. Just a hard fight is all. He wrapped his arms around her.
  10. By the time Helda entered the commander's office, the man was nowhere to be seen and the room was a mess. Tayen was on the floor, bleeding and in pain.
  11. You set the fire. I can go in and knock out the commander, since he won't be able to knock me out. Then... we let ourselves burn.
  12. Let's look around to see if we can find a torch or lantern.
  13. Maybe, but we'll need to get to it and use it to start a larger fire somewhere else.
  14. The worry slipped into his expression again. "I don't know either, Rue. I'm sorry."
  15. How will we start the fire?
  16. "Of course they do. Everyone deserves a chance."
  17. Let's go, then.
  18. "Do you want to try, Rue?" TAAron asked quietly.
  19. After a moment's hesitation, he just shrugged.
  20. It's worth it. I can survive a lot, so I'll be around to tell them what happened. Then I'll recover. I always do. It's worth that for us to be happy.
  21. "I don't blame you. And maybe someday, you'll remember. I think you already might more than you know."
