  1. "No... I've never really been able to put people back together. Sometimes they repair themselves somewhat. Otherwise, they make good projects. Good servants, too, in some cases."
  2. "I can't bring him back. What's done is done."
  3. TAAron pulled back, now looking terrified. He tried to reach for Rue.
  4. "Hm. He's not the first person I've broken, but this may be the most extreme and unusual case. I'd quite like to observe him, see what functions he retains and how this could develop." Carab retained his disturbingly gleeful smile.
  5. Nothing seemed to change. Whatever may have been left inside him was very still.
  6. TAAron froze, his grip on her hand tightening.
  7. What she found was haunting. His mind seemed evacuated, his own self pulverized. All that was left was a distant memory of pain.
  8. "Not in the typical sense. They have very powerful Allomancy that lets them view the world by burning steel."
  9. He didn't answer, meeting her eyes with emptiness, no hint of familiarity or recognition.
  10. He smiled at her again, before beginning to look around as they danced. "I don't think I see Elariel, do you?"
  11. Her pain released. Tayen sat up, looking around. When his eyes landed in her, his gaze was chilling. He was expressionless, emotionless. The love and care that had been in his eyes before when he looked at her was nowhere to be found.
  12. Then, Tayen began to breathe again. Carab's eyes widened. "Well, isn't that something..."
  13. He grinned, took her waist, and led her into a dance. He was quite natural and fluid. "This is nice."
  14. Against her will, she found her muscles locking and spasming from pain, unable to move her toward him. "I'm sorry. That was only a slight possibility, but I had to try. The cost of science, you see."
  15. TAAron faced her, and reached out. Then he hesitated. "You won't stab me, will you?"
  16. A wave of pain crumpled her before she could reach him. "Hm. Turns out pain can kill. That kind, anyway."
  17. "That's unfortunate. I quite like dancing." He smiled at her.
  18. "In a moment, but now I'm curious..." She saw a flash of something in his expression, and Tayen went completely limp, pulse gone.
  19. He still had a pulse, but was completely dead to the world, face a mask of suffering. "He's just in... well, a lot of pain. Significantly more than you were in, I'd guess, given how long it took."
  20. Tayen crumpled. He went completely rigid, and even seemed to stop breathing.
  21. Still nothing happened, until eventually it had taken longer than it had for Helda. Carab looked downright giddy with excitement.
  22. Don't be. It's alright. Carab placed the gemstone into Tayen's hand. As with Helda, nothing immediately happened.
  23. I'll do it.
  24. Her hand felt an intense shock of pain, forcing her to reflexively drop his arm. @Lightweaver2
