    After a moment of internal struggle, Terrance stood up and let himself be seen.

    Terrance, now mostly invisible, sat down and closed his eyes. How am I so easily overwhelmed? His hands kept shaking and his heart kept pounding.

    If Elsie looked back, Terrance would appear to have vanished.

    He took a few shaky breaths, then nodded.

    Terrance just shook his head. He clenched his hands into fists, but they did not stop shaking.

    He immediately and violently pulled away, scrambling to his feet. "Don't... don't."

    "I don't know that I'd say mean. They don't trust me, so it's best not to trust them either."

    "Sorry," he said quietly. He felt his hands tremble slightly.

    In a moment of surprise, Terrance's eyes met hers. He immediately looked away, but it was too late. Elsie felt a wave of terror and dread.

    "Well, I try not to be like the people who see me and decide that they should get rid of the thing that scares them, even though that thing is a person."
