  1. The officer sat up and glanced around dreamily. “Hello.” Her eyes passed over Nayka without recognition. What the… why doesn’t she recognize me? Doesn’t she remember what I… What if… what if she doesn’t remember? Is that possible? Thoughts going a mile a minute, she tried to both look casual to the officer, but also infer to the others that her fear was not gone. Now she understood why Buka had said not to travel with merging groups. With two stories, he’d told her often, his eager brown eyes gleaming intensely but excitedly, and trying to play both stories up at the same time to different people, it gets complicated. If you can, just avoid people altogether. Even just one complicated enough. Except family. He’d grinned and gently slugged her. But then he hadn’t followed his own advice. That was why her brother was gone. Oh, Buka, why did you have to meet her?
  2. Haly sat in the wall being absolutely depressed. Hidden from anything and everything, due to the nature of walls, she started feeling drowsy. She continued to dwell on her sadness until she did fall asleep. This was bad because she was in the wall.
  3. “Not at all. Any of the Kukonandi can bond them—or just about anything else. When you turn thirteen, a Channeler helps you create a channel between you and an object. You share some of yourself with it—your vitality, your senses, some capacity for thought and emotion… stuff like that. You can close the channel temporarily, but cutting off your Bonditem altogether is quite a bit harder.” ”There was one of us skilled in Ocumeritation, a long time ago, who basically saw a stick move. From then on it was sentinent. Of course, she had to justify how in her mind, so she thought of something that made sense. And thus Bonditems have been in practice ever since.”
  4. “They grow on my home island, Osakhazikika. They’re inert until you bond them, but so temperamental that nobody ever bothers. Only now do I understand why.” She glared at Eej, who sunk in protest, still moving.
  5. Eej bucked Kealie off, prompting a yell from her. The vines fell inert as Kealie stood over them and berated them. Finally, they regained the power of movement and sheepishly picked her up again.
  6. “Fine. Fine!” Haly yelled. “I miss my magic kingdom! It was all right there, and I’m too unstable for it! Happy?” Unable to hide her tears, Haly fled into the walls to cry. [she goes through stuff. So she’s in the wall.]
  7. Haly shook her head. “It’s not important. Not compared to his soul breaking.” Look. I just miss Nayo. And I dreamt I was there. That’s it. “Yeah. We found a substance… well, ask him.” She pointed to Nameless.
  8. “No.” Haly stood up. “We need to fix TAAron’s soul.” Thanks. It’s nothing. “We we’re thinking we could go through the voidthing at the edge of the world. I forgot what it was called.”
  9. Haly just shook her head, slowly running her finger around the rim of the goblet. “I was so close. I could have been there without hurting anyone. But it’s broken now. I… I need to go home.” Where is home? “I need to get back to the clinic. I need to get somewhere.” It doesn’t make any sense.
  10. Haly sank to the floor, holding a goblet in her hand. The Quaicider inside had already spilled on her. She turned it over, watching it gleam. “But…” she whispered, “I was so close.” A tear trickled down her cheek to her chin, then dripped onto the floor.
  11. “Nameless? What are you doing here? Charlotte? Azalea?” Haly hoisted herself over the things and paled. “Where’d the party go? What happened? Am I going sane?”
  12. Haly screamed and bolted upright, and several things tumbled into the room—a chandelier, which landed right next to her and shattered, at least thirty goblets of some sort of cider, different plates of food, a lot of very fancy shoes, and a large amount of instruments, some familiar, some unfamiliar. This all piled up around Haly quite quickly. ”What happened?” She yelled. “Is everyone okay?”
  13. “She can’t die!” Jove ran over and shook her, then jumped up and clutched his head. “I can’t have a blot like this on my resume! This is only my first mission!”
  14. “Explode! I don’t want to explode! That would be a very bad idea! HELP! I DONT WANT TO…” she fell to the floor in a dead faint. A shower of leaves poofed up around her body for some reason.
  15. “The insanity clinic,” Haly chirped, then winced internally as the tone throbbed in her head. She lowered her voice. “We’re all patients.” ”Besides me,” Jove put in hastily. “I’m an agent for the UIW. I’m supposed to watch unstable individuals—magically unstable.”
  16. Okay, this one is gorgeous. The color palette is just… *chief’s kiss* AMAZING.
  17. “Uhhhhh…. Sorry.” Haly was feeling sort of lightheaded, but now was probably a bad time to mention that.
  18. “He’s stopped seeing you like that FOR NOW,” Haly corrected. “Until we get to that tower, ‘for now’ might be rendered ‘over’ any minute.”
  19. “Let’s quit yapping and GO.” Kealie urged Eej forward, then paused. “Sorry. I didn’t mean that.”
