    This one was in a language she could read. It discussed theory of something called Cosmic Debt. Vey opened the window, letting a chilly breeze into the room. It helped significantly with the warm stuffiness.

    Oh, the universe had a twisted sense of humor. If only Bat knew it was there and could screech before all of the Authors returned to see him make a spectacle of himself. But reality is cold, hard, unforgiving, and unchangeable. At least for Bat.

    She gave him a quick hug, eyeing the other person. "You feeling okay? Is the bond too much?" He shrugged and moved over to a lectern, blowing the dust off the book. It was written in an unfamiliar language, but he picked up the small wooden bear paperweight. Outside the windows was a view of a small town from high above, as if the room were in a tower. The town was quiet and empty, at least for the moment. Beyond it lay stretches of open plains and rolling hills.

    A round, dusty room awaited her, furnished like an attic. Chairs, chests, and shelves slept beneath films of cobwebs. Large windows let in the sallow yellow light of the dying sun.
