Hi y'all, I have been perusing the general discussions page, and saw several threads dedicated for discussion for people who fit a specific group. Atheist, LDS, Trans, astronomists, and others. It's so cool to see all thos groups. One group that I didn't see, unless I missed it, is a thread for parents. I thought it could be a cool page to start, just to share stories that made us laugh, cry, feel proud.

I honestly don't know if there are many other parents out here, but I thought I'd try to put it out there to see if there's any engagement.

So last night my Little One (LO) told us a straight up lie for the first time. LO didn't want to change clothes before bed, but had spent several hours outside digging in dirt, honestly should have had a bath too, but it was already really late. (I was helping my parents with their sprinkler system, so LO decided to "help" too.) My wife wasn't at grandma's house, so my LO didn't know that wife knew we were outside the whole time.
My wife was putting LO down for bed time while I was putting younger siblings down, and LO told my wife that they had spent the entire time at grandma's house inside, so they didn't need to change clothes and could sleep in normal clothes.

I realize that starting to lie is a developmental milestone when a child realizes they can say something that didn't actually happen, and at that age it's more about testing their abilities to influence parents and not be truthful. But it still kindof stung that LO would double down as much as they did, when they knew full well that they had not even gone inside grandma's house the entire time we were there.

Just a heads up, I've moved this topic to Social Groups instead of General Discussion, since it's better suited here 🙂

Sorry, I got scared. And I happen to be a new Sharder. What really gave me a mini heart attack was when Chaos quoted me.

That's fair. I promise I'm not scary, despite me being a mod xD Those of ya'll that have met me in person can attest to that, along with some others lol

  4. 6 minutes ago, Aeoryi said:

Tbh so many of the newer sharders are petrified of seeing a name in red or blue. It's kinda funny.

It makes sense, since older sharders are more likely to have interacted with mods more and realized we aren't scary. And since a bunch of mods are more active on the Discord, those on the discord also don't find us nearly as scary xD

Nobody found me scary when I just had my orange-ish Keeper name lol

yesh true it's just surprising i guess cuz you're like the only mod who's generally active outside of mod stuff, aside from Ene sometimes

They're all active on the discord, that's why (as Aeoryi said). The discord has much more chatter and active members, so most of the mods are primarily active there. (Though many used to be active here when most of the activity/discussion was on the forums)
And yeah, Rasarr does the AoN distribution, and Chaos and Ene are on here some as well. Though whenever someone sends a report, all the mods get alerted, and whenever we do moderation we do it as a staff team, so a bunch of mods will look at things

Well yeah, sometimes I do have to do my job xD But that's a small percentage of my total time perusing the forums

    I’m confused and scared now.

    I didn’t do anything wrong I SWEAR

I get how mods can be scary, but you really don't need to worry. Even if you did accidentally do something against forum policy, we'll let you know, but we know when things are accidents, and you won't get punished for double posting or something. You're only likely to get banned/temp banned if you repeatedly break rules after being told off, or major code of conduct violations

still... a book forum? Not telling people to stop using this, it's really good, but again: a book forum? Really?

It is interesting yeah. And as a reminder: while I think this forum is better than many out there, it’s still fully visible to everyone with an internet connection, and that’s a good thing to keep in mind.

we uphold a high community standard on the shard. You will not see bigotry of any kind here.

While maybe less than some forums, there are unfortunately still some trolls and assholes that show up from time to time. They just get banned swiftly :D

    Spoiler

Kinda depends on if it’s more an issue of just not being hungry and struggling to make yourself eat, or more of a mental block of being afraid of gaining weight. If the former, liquid calories are a great way as mentioned before. If it’s the latter, it’s gonna be hard to eat more until you fix the underlying body image issues. (Though you should still try to eat because you have to eat to live and function well) And there’s different ways one can go about that, the best of which being therapy, depending on the severity

If it’s any extra motivation, eating a proper amount and a well balanced diet also helps general mental health as well, so you’re not just eating to benefit your physical health and survive, but also your quality of life.

So this feels like depression is actively seeking a reason to exist even though my life is okay, and trying to make my life worse

Sounds like you’re spot on, this would be my guess as well. Good on you for being that self aware to know this about yourself. It’s kinda what I’ve mentioned to you before about self verification therapy. Your brain sees the depression as the norm and wants to find ways to cling on. But eventually your unconscious identity can and will change. You’re allowed to be happy, and it’s good to consciously affirm that fact

At least in my mind, that kinda is how depression works in a way. Or at least, how the brain works if you believe self verification theory, which then applies to depression

But psychologists disagree on a lot of stuff xD

I don't wanna check how many I have due after skipping several weeks

which I couldn't really have not

Yeah a few weeks might be rough, though if you do want to get back into it, you can make your daily max review limit lower on anki so you don’t have as many per day

Hello! I’ve been using the forums for awhile now during my journey through the cosmere and finally decided to create an account for posting theories, contributing to others’ posts, and becoming more active in the community.

Welcome to the Shard! Which is your favorite Brandon book, and what's your favorite non-Brandon book/series?

Chat GPT was able to create it for me with some prompts

I'm going to have to ask that you change it then, as well as your profile banner if that's AI as well. 🙂 AI generated content of any kind is not allowed on the Shard per our Forum Policies.

Why are Shard Chaos and Forums Chaos so incredibly different? One is funny, the other makes my heart skip a beat.

I've hung out with him in person and I can confirm that he is indeed funny and fun to be around xD But there's some bias in that if he's posting on here, there's a good chance it's moderation related. And if that's your only interactions with him, then he's bound to somewhat come across as scary, even tho he's not.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink and all that.

This is indeed the problem. While listening to others is good, and offering advice can be helpful, ultimately people do have to takes steps, as I've stressed before. If you just talk about your problems, that does tend to alleviate some of the emotional burden, but that won't fix the problems. Sometimes you can't change your environment and stressors. But you can always change how you respond to them. And the stressors you can change, try to change them.

Preparation is also key. If you've been eating a healthy balanced diet, been getting quality 8 hours of sleep, and get exercise/sunlight, you'll be better equipped to handle things sent your way. While those aren't always feasible for everyone, it's often more feasible than you think if you prioritize them. All of those are proven to have mental health benefits. Even if it doesn't completely erase your mental health struggles, they'll at least lessen the symptoms somewhat, even if you don't always notice it.

It's very easy to get trapped in the mindset of "This is just what I struggle with, it's a part of who I am". But it can be dangerous to think that way, as it's easy to give up trying to improve your mental health. There's tons and tons of resources out there, whether through therapy (the best one, since it's tailored to you), or through books or online. But eventually you have to take steps to seek them out and apply them. Oftentimes we actually know what we need to do, whether that's open up to IRL friends or prioritize sleep, but we end up not doing them anyway

@Denissimo Also quick mod note, pls edit your previous post in the future instead of double posting 🙂 (You can put stuff in spoiler boxes for length too if need be)

(And another note, please remember to put SH stuff in a labeled spoiler box)

  13. This is probably relevant for a lot of folks in here, so I wanted to share a book rec that I just finished today and really loved. It's called Revealing, by Leslie John, and it talks about the various ways that oversharing is underrated, though also ways to gauge when and how to share info, and when not to share. Also some great insights on disclosure dilemmas(when you can't figure out if you should share or not share something with someone). Also has a really good chapter on how sharing is used to form deep friendships and relationships. (Spoiler alert: It's essential) Very good book.
