  1. I bring the goat in my boat, ‘cause it don’t float.
  2. “Oh. I thought you were just using hovertech or something,” Allera said absently, tapping twice on the wall, which pulled up a control panel. Their altitude was 7,000 meters. “Wait. Eldritch horror?”

I tested negative, but I also kind of feel like crem. So idk.

  4. “Well, yes, but you were talking about some kind of magic, too. What’s that about?” Allera found what they were looking for — a small remote with two buttons, and held it up, pressing the top button. Immediately, the ground began to shake, and a sleek, metal wall, sliding in from the side of the cave, shut the hideout off from the rest of the cave. The hideout began to rise, recoil pressing down on its occupants.
  5. “That’s a long story, and you still haven’t told me how you got here, so how about we get our mysterious, possibly evil power off the planet first, then talk.” They lifted their mattress, rummaging around beneath it.
  6. Allera realized that there was probably no point in hiding their real name anymore now that Ayia knew about the bounty. “I’m Allera.” To Ayia: “Lyri is my childhood nickname. I didn’t want to tell you my real name; I’m kind of… infamous around here.”
  7. The three of them arrived back at the main hideout a couple minutes later. It was disconcerting to have Variance at the edge of their vision; it felt like when they looked at the sun and it left an impression on their vision; only, it didn’t fade.
  8. “Follow me.” They gestured the pair deeper into the hideout, picking up the torch from where they’d dropped it and re-lighting it.
  9. Allera looked from Variance to Ayia. Setting the thing free would be gambling with not only Allera’s life, but, if Ayia was to be believed, the lives of everyone in the galaxy. On the other hand, it could mean safety, or even freedom. Allera had been running for so long they’d almost forgotten what those things felt like. Allera clicked their tongue. “Let’s do it.”
  10. “Hm. He could provide a more… sustainable place for me to hide. And protection, if he’s as powerful as he says.”
  11. Allera had no idea what was happening, but stared at the “Variance” thing accusingly as if they did. “Conditions?” They clicked their tongue in thought. “Maybe ‘don’t kill anyone’ is a good start.”
  12. Allera raised an eyebrow at them.
  13. “…We’ll help you.”
  14. “…Take them down?” Ayia suddenly seemed like a very good person to have on your side.
  15. “The stones aren’t complicated in themselves. Each of them controls one of the nine basic elements: air, water, earth, wood, fire, electricity, time, space, and mind. But together, someone skilled can use multiple at once to do more powerful, complex things. I don’t think a Mage could do this, but I’m not willing to bet my life on it.”
  16. “Or, they could be a Mage playing tricks on us!” Allera took an angry bite of dried meat.
  17. “Or, they could kill me and collect the hundred thousand ilak bounty on my head.”
  18. “Look, Aisha. You don’t know what kind of gales I’m in. We have to leave. Now.”
  19. Allera couldn’t some up with a good response, so they folded their wings back and said nothing.
  20. “And how do we know we can trust you?”
  21. “They’ve got stones like mine. But more of them — and more complicated ones, too; they can control forces, create illusions, lots of different things.” Allera paused, catching their breath. “That… I’ve never seen anything like that, though. That hand, coming from out of nowhere…” They shuddered. They turned towards the figure. “What… what are you?”
