The Stormlight books are getting to be a bit too long. He cut or skipped big emotional scenes from Oathbringer like Jasnah and Navani reuniting after Navani spent all of WoR buried in grief over her "death", Shallan's wedding occurs off page and Dalinar / Navani confronting Szeth after the battle isn't shown. Szeth's suddenly her bodyguard after killing her first husband and trying to kill her second husband twice. This seems like the result of trying to cram too much in, he had to omit these because they aren't that plot important, but they are extremely character important.

He recycles some big plot arcs quite a bit.

Shallan's Oathbringer plot of feeding refugees and it backfiring is a recycled Elantris plot where they the naive noblewoman is ignorant of gangs that control the area of a closed off city under siege/ guard and she gets people hurt / killed by giving away food. It's like he needed a reason for Shallan to be in need of a Hoid pep talk.

Taravangian being revealed to be performing human sacrifice is a better done version of Iadon in Elantris. Both were monarchs who seemed kind of stupid and had a hidden chamber where they performed human sacrifice to gain something from supernatural beings.

Bridge 4  and Kelsier's crew coming together are very similar to Raodon's "building a community" plot. They all realize they need to do something to make life worth living. Cooking, cleaning taking pride in the small things. Kelsier, Kaladin and Raodon all fake smile and laugh to keep other people's spirits up. Since Bridge 4 is a transplant from Dragonsteel prime the other two are reiterations of Bridge 4 really.

I feel like people have kind of ignored this. But you’re right here, he’s constantly reusing plot elements, I suppose if you’ve written as many books in the same genre that he has then you are going to to have to retread at some points. I hope that this doesn’t become more of a problem in the space age cosmere.

    Stormlight by Enid Blyton

Shallan would be expected to stay at home and do the dusting. She has a male alter ego, so she can pretend to be a boy and do the fun things.

There are a lot more tea parties and no wine.  There are kindly darkeyed matrons all over the continent, whose sole purpose in life is to put some meat on the bones of the protagonists.  Many sandwiches, macaroons and high teas will be consumed.  Lift takes particular advantage of these.

Syl is fluffy and says "woof".

The Parshendi are described as "swarthy" and having an unpleasant smell. :/

It turns out all the funny things that have happening are actually just distractions by a group of smugglers, who have been using the shattered plains for their gemheart shifting operation.

At the end, Kaladin, Shallan, Adolin, and his misunderstood cousin Elhokar all get on their bicycles and ride home for sandwiches and ginger beer.

And you’ve got to remember Hoid would be this unassuming man who secretly turns out to be a renowned detective who follows the kids around, serves as a masculine role model for the boys and always make sure no one gets seriously injured.

    I like Lirin.

I don't like Jasnah. Too nigh-perfect. Was hoping she would have a major defeat in Rhythm of War for once but it didn't happen.

I think Lirin is great too.

and I too absolutely despise Jasnah. I get what Brandon’s going for with her but she’s so insufferable at times, she needs to brought down a few rungs and then she’ll have to go to a greater effort to prove herself to the high princes and that could be interesting. But instead we get this weird feminist power fantasy of a character, I want to love Jasnah rest of fan base but I’ll think we’ll have to wait till she gets her own focus novel. (I think that’s book ten, can’t be sure though.) So Brandon can flesh her out and make her more three dimensional.

How would Sel look like? What technology would they even have? Can't even imagine how their abilities would affect that.

They must have advanced a lot since when we first see them in Elantris, there is no way of knowing.

Does anyone else think that Thom Merrilin somehow worldhopped from Randland and is now hopping around the cosmere?

    It actually fits pretty well.

Both Thom and Hoid are politically savvy and pull strings behind the scenes. They are always somehow in the right place at the right time. And obviously they both have a penchant for telling stories and playing instruments.

Mate did you not already know? The cosmere is just an extended Thom Merrilyn backstory.

I mean... have you read other modern fantasy? Brandon is quite tame in comparison!

Though to address your point, my main concern is that he will not do the topics justice (i.e. the religion/atheist deal.)

I wouldn’t worry too much he’s got an interesting worldview and certainly doesn’t come across as a stereotypical Mormon. I’m sure he’ll fairly represent atheism and religon.

2: Shallan is the best character of SA.

3: Kaladin's past was the worst of the four we know about.

4: Lift's interlude in WoR is the most boring chapter in SA.

5: Mistborn Era 1 is YA but they aren't considered like that because people think YA is a derogatory term.

    1. Yes it’s the most fun definitely the dialogue between wax and Wayne is awesome and I feel like Brandon struggled to carry it through to the latter two. It also feels inconsequential which is a welcome break for a cosmere book.

    2. I wouldn’t agree until I finished Row recently I think her character work in that one was phenomenonal.

    3. I agree but not by much. And if think it’s more reliant on the suffering Kaladin is going through in present. And it’s very well executed to, but conceptually it’s he weakest and certainly not that original by fantasy standards.

  8. It would be even higher. Remember Roshar has weaker gravity than most planets so the average Rosharans height might be even higher than on earth and thus he ceilings too would be higher even an extra half a metre for each floor could make an enormous difference on a whole. Just a thought.
