  1. "I have been toyed with by many, king. I know what it feels to have one's emotions played with as if they were nothing. She will stay with me at my estate, and if you try to take her by force, then try it." He offered a smile, though no joy was behind it. "Would you like to learn as the Anadlas did?"
  2. Caden pressed his fists against the table, leaning his weight onto it. "It sounds as if the king himself has bought into the myth that surrounds this woman."
  3. "But the Ravenness already does not live. There is no Ravenness in this kingdom after you removed Riva from the position." He tilted his head, much like a dog. "That is what you did, yes?"
  4. "How is she a threat? All she can do at my estate is interact with me and brew potions. You have made sure of that."
  5. "I must beg your pardon again. she and I have tried to make the most of this marriage."
  6. Caden's face reddened at the suggestion, leading to the large man to glare at the king. "Do not speak ill of my wife, Ivian."
  7. "Bu-" He cleared his throat, trying to compose himself. "She's proven to be irreplaceable to my estate."
  8. "You mean to get rid of this marriage?"
  9. "Impri-" Caden gasped at the thought of Riva in a dark and dingy cell. "My lord, you can't be serious."
  10. Caden nodded. "Very well, my liege. But I don't see what that has to do with my marriage."
  11. Despite Ivian's shift, Caden held motionless as he processed the information provided to him. "To monitor her, and keep her out of trouble. Yes?"
  12. "I . . . Beg your pardon, my lord?"
  13. "After the North is quelled, my lord."
  14. "I will compile a list of targets, then."
  15. "I agree. Alteringour recruitment efforts could lead to more men being locally available for those who have lands near the East. I wish to use them as a delaying tactic in order to give me time to bring a swift defeat to the north." Caden leaned back from the map. "There is also the concept of the King's assassins. In the past, they have been used exclusively for internal matters. I would like you to revisit that policy. Striking at the enemies command structure would be a vital approach to slowing their advance."
  16. "I have trained militia forces in the east. Similarly to our departed rebel friends, they are masters of asymmetric warfare. But they won't be enough. What forces can you muster from the vassals under your command beyond the current standing army?"
  17. "The east's armies are numerous, and prepared for conflict as soon as the first frost melts." Caden leaned over the table, drawing lines across the map with his finger to match what he said. "Therefore, the best option for an attack is the North. while they are preparing, their forces are not nearly as numerous. If it came to it, we could win a pitched battle."
  18. "While some are slow to remember our might, the Anadlas can't forget the death that I brought to them. Using their fear could secure their border, and limit the scope of a conflict."
  19. "I cannot agree with you more, sire. However, matching their total strength could be difficult." He cleared his throat. "But if this is your command, then it will be done."
  20. Caden looked towards the map with great concern. "My lord, a reserved assault would put us at risk." The general didn't understand politics, only the numbers of warfare. The enemy forces they had the potential to fight far outweighed their own. "Surely upon seeing an offensive from our men against a few will bring the many to our door."
  21. "They sense weakness, my lord. Since we did not remind them of our strength, instead focusing on dealing with internal rebels, they seek conflict. I am sure of it."
  22. "Then I present two options, my lord." Caden stood up straight, meeting Ivian's eyes. "Either we fight a strictly defensive war, relying on our knowledge of our homeland to give us the advantage. Or," Caden added with a grin, "we deploy a senseless grin, pushing them to be constantly on the backfoot. While risky, it lowers the chances that your lands will be burned by the enemy."
  23. "Very well, my lord. I trust that you are up to date on the report of my spies."
  24. Shrugging away another attendant who tried to grab his attention, Caden pressed forward through the castle. His once obvious slouch was receding as he walked closer to his full height, striding through the castle to a destination that he had travelled to more times than he could count. In all honesty, he hardly needed to wonder on what he was being summoned for, as until recently, the king had little other reasons to summon him. That, and the messenger had told him why. He paused for a moment at the door, nodding to the guardsmen before passing through the entryway and bowing before the king, though not as deeply as he had in times past. "You summoned me, my lord?" @Channelknight Fadran
