  1. "It wasn't," Caden protested to the room. "I did . . ." He took a breath, trying to fight the surge of emotion that caused a burning in his eyes. "I did all that I could," he mumbled as he sank back onto the sofa.
  2. "It- It wasn't my fault!" Caden lied, "I couldn't do anything . . . Burn it all!" He stood up, "it wasn't my fault!"
  3. "Let's not talk about this, please."
  4. "I can't ask you to forgive me, though." Caden took a small sip from the glass, "just, please don't mention her again."
  5. "Then I tossed you into the mud, and I slapped you." He turned away from her, refusing to meet her eyes. "You should hate me. While I could apologize, nothing, not even vintage Vinoese could make up for that. You claim to love me, but how can you after all of that?"
  6. "I cost you your magical evening, your position as Raveness, and I led to your mockery and subsequent imprisonment." He looked away from her, "all because I couldn't keep my blazing temper."
  7. "I- don't want to make you uncomfortable, but I need to talk about those 'twilight hours.'"
  8. Caden poured two glasses, and set the bottle back into the bucket. "I doubt that," he said as he handed her a glass, "I need something to do, Riva. But that's-" He took a deep breath, "that's not what I'd like to talk about right now."
  9. "Well, it's not Vinoese, but I only have one bottle." He shrugged, "however drunk you want."
  10. "You could," Caden agreed, "but let's start with this." He produced the wine bottle from the bucket, as well as two glasses.
  11. "But that would have spoiled the surprise," Caden pointed out as he went to be sure that the door was closed for privacy. "Besides, you look as ravishing as always."
  12. Caden tried to sneak in a few kisses of his own before entering a room that had obviously been prepared beforehand. A large and plushy sofa sat before a crackling fireplace that lit up the room softly, of which there were two end tables flanking it. One had a large silver covered by a low lid, and the other had a bucket filled with ice that held a wine bottle. While the low lighting made it difficult to make out the far corners of the room, it placed a focus on the sofa that Caden moved to place Riva gently upon.
  13. "If they wish to speak ill of the King's feared general and the most terrifying woman in the kingdom, then they are more than welcome to." Despite his words, he turned his head slightly so that Riva couldn't see before shooting a hard glare at the maid.
  14. "If your lovely face was asking the questions, then not even a day."
  15. "Nope, nothing romantic." Caden lied, "just an evening with my wife, that's all." He turned away from the dining room, and diverted towards a hall that he hadn't used in a while.
  16. "Nothing," Caden protested again as he left out of his office's door. "I just figured you'd like to go for a stroll after being in you office all day."
  17. "I was not," Caden protested playfully. "However, if an opportunity presents itself, I try not to push it away."
  18. "I'm taking my beautiful wife to her seat so she doesn't tire herself out, of course." He grinned at her, "unless you'd like to walk?"
  19. "Then it's a good thing you were married to a strong man," Caden said with a smile. The moment he stopped speaking, he swept Riva's legs out from under her in one, smooth motion. He lifted her up and carried her like the knights in the stories told to children.
  20. Caden smiled, "do you want to sit down?"
  21. "You can be," Caden affirmed, "and you are." He took deep breaths, keeping them rhythmic and consistent.
  22. Caden found himself wrapping his arms around Riva, then swaying softly side to side as he hushed her. Not knowing what else to say, he whispered softly into her ear. "I love you."
  23. He leaned down and kissed her gently before meeting her eyes again, "do you believe me?"
  24. Caden lifted her chin gently so he could meet her dazzling blue eyes, as piercing as the sun, and as captivating as the Stars themselves. How he had ever feared them was entirely beyond him. "I'd never lie to you."
