    Caden raised an eye brow, "yes, Riva?"

    "Go ahead, brew another potion to get him to doubt his personal guard." He sniffed, "you're a horrible woman, one the general would never fall for in his right mind."

    "You admit it, then. Trapped him with your traps and snares you vile woman." He grabbed the hilt of his blade, "to think that someone with the likes of you believes herself to be worthy of the general's affection."

    "We are of the Praetorium Guard, the best in the land. We only give our respect to those who earn it."

    "What you say is impossible," the guard sneered, "no one could fall for a conniving and ugly woman like yourself. Especially not a man as prestigious as our general. He deserve ten times the woman you'll ever be."

    The man's face turned harder than his steel blade, "I don't know what spell you cast on him, but I've head and seen your witchcraft before. It won't last."

    "Good," Caden said, his plain but obviously starched cloths matching his wife's. "I don't want to keep you waiting."

    The doors flung open as Fischer forced his way through them, hardly noticing when Nowak tried to wave him down. He made his way to the back of the room, where he saw the captain filing away some paperwork into a small chest of drawers. The young man approached with a short salute, "sir, I have to report to you immediately." The captain returned with a short salute, "better make it quick, soldier." "Sir, I have seen evidence about a case of assault between a troublesome serving woman, and one of the King's men." "If it was one of the palace guard, then they can handle it themselves," the captain said with a scoff. "They've made that abundantly clear to us." Fischer shook his head, "no sir, not one of the guard. He's just a staff member, and a serving woman tried to kill him, and she's probably willing to do so again." "I will not just go about arresting people on the staff. What evidence do you have?" "I saw it myself, and I helped the young man arrive at the medical center." The captain raised an eyebrow, "then it sounds as if you should have performed the arrest yourself, soldier." "The uh, opportunity didn't present itself," Fischer said before clearing his throat. "Then go file a report with the evidence, and we'll address it in turn." The older officer sighed, "I don't mean to sound callous, but we're just not cut out for this sort of work." "Sir, I'm worried that she'll try to strike again, I request that we post a Praetorium man to watch over the medical ward." "I'll order in one soldier." The captain thought on the subject a moment before looking back at Fischer, "do you know who in specific we need to watch out for?" "Allivia Nordy, sir." At the simple mentioning of the name, the captain froze before speaking hesitantly. "The same Allivia Nordy that's under investigation for bribery?" "One in the same, sir." The man did what passed for a smile. It was barely a twitch on his face, but he might as well be shouting in joy. "We've been needing a reason to arrest her. Do you know where she is now?" Fischer stood up straighter, "I saw her heading towards the medical ward, where the man she attacked is resting." The captain called over Nowak, "get some men together, sergeant. I have an assignment for you." ------ With his back straightened further than normal at the apparent challenge, the guard glared back at the former torturess. "The general knows where our loyalty lies, Raveness, and we know where his loyalty lies. The same cannot be said for you."

    "Of course, love." Caden brushed off his clothes while he stood near the door, waiting. "Whenever you are ready."

    Name: Caden Praetorium Appearance: Fairly tall at 6'4, although he walks with a feint slouch. His most distinctive feature is the scarring on his face, which if not for the scaring, it might have been considered handsome. His scars are accompanied by caramel hair that is greying out fast, but accented by amber gold eyes. While no longer in any official military, he still dresses both in a militaristic and utilitarian, unless his wife decides to dress him. Details: Reaching nearly 56 years of age, to which he has survived to because of both his continued skill in combat, as well as his wife's skill is potion making. While he was once a proud general of the kingdom of Mendahar, but he was forced to the humility of the dust when he failed to save it from destruction. Now he's searching with his wife, the once infamous Raveness for a new purpose, which he believes that he has found in breeding and caring for dogs, but his better half might have other plans. Personality: A straight forward, and often times oblivious man to social situations. He's uncompromising unless he's dealing with his wife, then whatever she wants will fly (within reason). Skills: Superb in the art of combat despite his age, and while he's straightforward in social situations, he's a tactical and strategic man when it comes to working his way around a battlefield. What he lacks for in youth is made up for in age and experience.

    "No?" Caden raised an eyebrow as she ate more than he had suspected anyone could stomach.

    "She did . . ." He shook his head while wiping his cheeks. "But I've never been able to get them right. For ages I decided that i was useless without her."

    "I just thought that you might be distraught, and it always makes me feel better when I have one of them . . ."

    "Alright . . . I might have made it . . ." He looked away, ashamed.

    "I- No?"

    'Wait!" Caden demanded just too late as a faint burnt smell was released when the lid was lifted. Beneath it was a poor attempt at some sort of pot pie that had been obviously left in the oven for too long.

    "It's nothing, it would be better if you didn't think on it."

    "Hum?" He looked over to the end table before clearing his throat, "we don't have to . . ."

    "No, I promise you." He locked eyes with hers, "I wasn't enough for- for her, and I understand if you doubt me. But I promise that I'll do everything I can."

    Caden hesitated for but a moment before kissing her back, holding her close as if to never let go.

    Caden sighed deeply, ignoring the tears that streamed down his face while slowly lifting his arms to hold Riva close. "I wish it was as simple as deciding . . ."

    Caden gasped at her intensity, unable to bring his own arms to embrace her back. "I don't deserve this. I let her down, and I'll only let you down, too."

    "Tell that to the young man who was too late to even catch her last moments, her last breath." Caden demanded, "tell that to the man-" He clenched his fists, trying to fight away the tears that threatened to flow when he considered the moment again. "Tell that to the man who would have traded his life to feel her warmth, her loving embrace one last time."

    "Of course," Caden whispered. "But I should have been more."

    Caden followed in his wife's example, calming down until a single tear crept its way down his cheek. "I should have been faster . . . I should have been there . . ."
