SA2, ch14: Adolin wins his first Blade, very nice. I didn't fully understand why everyone was so upset and what he did that was so different than standard dueling style except... attack quickly and violently, which seems like a fair move. I like how Adolin is so loyal to his father at this point, and it's a little funny how he doesn't trust Kaladin.

I actually loved the detail that people were upset, b/c stupid unspoken rules still exist in sports today.  So many silly things in baseball like frowning upon batters for hitting a homerun when the lead is already great - like, I know we're probably gonna win, but is this not what you payed me to do?  Same thing but different here.

I liked seeing some disgruntled fans lol, Adloin's desire to just win and skip the propensities was fun.

So, the planet isn't necessary invested itself. And besides that something happening to Harmony would have minimal impact on anything that wasn't the shard itself, even if they ran on his Investiture.

Wasn't Scadrial, as a planet, created by Ruin and Preservation working together? That makes it, so far as I'm aware, the only planet not made up of 'general' investiture - maybe the combination of the two powers outside of a vessel doesn't make exactly Harmony's investiture, but I feel like Harmony's destruction would effect Scadrial at least in some way.

  3. Perhaps something similar to what happens with Radiant plate?  When the Knight is advanced enough, some windspren or logicspren homies or whatever your orders' lesser spren is make up the ammunition.

The bonded spren is the bow, the lesser spren are the arrows type deal.

Are lesser spren also of both Honor and Cultivation?  Cuz if so they'd also manifest as some variant of the same metal shardblades are currently, correct?

  4. (I think!) At least in some cases with Inquisitors, the spikes stick out of the body because they benefit from using longer spikes when creating Inquisitors

I don't recall where in the story, but we learn that on the operating tables, in order to steal the most power / make the strongest spike, Inquisitors will drive a spike through a living misting and into the nascent Inquisitor, whos laying beneath the body on the table.  For that to go well I certainly picture them using spikes long enough to stick out some end even when dug fully in.  Messy work lol.

I like Shallan, and I worry that the dislike of her falls on sexism. Dalinar and Kal have a lot of similar overlap to Shallan, but they rarely get the hate. Dalinar was much MUCH worse when he was working through his demons. What has Shallan done? Told some jokes and tried to help people while developing multiple personalities? I just don't think the treatment of her has been fair by many readers.

Dalinar was a monster, and I recognize that.  But his chapters are engaging, and I enjoy reading about his struggle and change.  He knows he was a monster, and it eats at him.  Were Dalinar a woman in the same position, she would be just as much of a monster, nothing would change for me.

Shallan makes some of the least funny jokes I've ever read.  I like reading her chapters, but man do I hate getting to her quips. The humor just doesn't land for me, and I dislike her not addressing her issues.  Were Shallan a man in the same position, his jokes would be equally unfunny, nothing would change for me.

Sure - maybe I don't completely understand Shallan's situation with all the mental health complications and why she choses to operate in the way she does.  But I can say the way she operates annoys me, even if I know it's not entirely her fault/choice, and that she is trying.  IDK...I know a lot of people don't like Shallan, but I seriously doubt it's because of sexism.

do we have conformation on this? because theoretically he could use it to become a misting in several metals, while still staying not very connected to any specific shard(which is a confirmed thing that he wants to do.

So if this is true wouldn’t that mean anyone can burn godmetals but don’t because they don’t know the importance

We do.  Here's one WoB, but there are a number off others.

    Spoiler

    Questioner

    What's lerasium?

    Brandon Sanderson

That is the bead of metal that Elend finds at the end of Book 2, that Vin finds and gives to Elend.

    Questioner

Oh so there were only two and the Lord Ruler kind of left it there?

    Brandon Sanderson

There actually were a bunch of them, and the first Mistborn came from people who ate that. The Lord Ruler took one for himself and he left others there to use if he needed them.

Footnote: Brandon has since canonized that Rashek used the power of the Well of Ascension to make himself into a Mistborn, not a bead of lerasium. Whether that contradicts this, or he used the bead for another purpose is unknown.
    Salt Lake City Comic-Con 2014 (Sept. 4, 2014)

IIRC there has been some back and forth on who can / cannot burn godmetals, especially concerning the Lerasium / Atium.  We should learn more on that point soon

    Spoiler

    Xais56

Brandon has said that everyone ought to be able to burn Atium, like they can all burn Lerasium, and the fact that they can't was an oversight on his part that he would've done different in hindsight.

Maybe now he's had an in-universe reason to re-write the laws of allomancy it's back to his intended concept; Mistborn burn all 16 base metals, mistings burn one base metal, non-allomancers can only burn godmetal.

    Peter Ahlstrom

My explanation for this is that Preservation somehow caused all naturally occurring atium to form as an alloy of atium and electrum. The atium Mistings were actually electrum Mistings.

    Xais56

It's a very tidy solution, but it creates the maddening question of what does pure atium do?

    Peter Ahlstrom

That answer has already been revealed canonically. RAFO.

    LewsTherinTelescope

Is this proper canon (or as close as out-of-book statements come), or more Peter the fan theorizing?

    Peter Ahlstrom

I’m not totally sure Brandon is happy with this explanation.

Footnote: Brandon later confirmed that this is indeed the case.

    *edit* much better WoB lol

    Paladin Brewer

Previously you were asked if Hoid could have been using the lerasium to alloy with other metals to change his spiritweb, and you answered it was technically possible. Does that mean you’re finally admitting that Hoid did not digest the bead?

    Brandon Sanderson

I am not admitting that. It was possible for him to do that, but he did not.

Isn’t hoid a mistborn? Unless it’s though a different means he should be proof that anyone can burn the god metals

Hoid is a full Mistborn after consuming the bead from the well.  IDK why he'd want to alloy it to just be a misting

edit - and a damn strong one at that.  He ate one of the OG 16 beads so he's as strong as Elend was

  8. the snippets of song Robert Jordan wrote for the series are always such a highlight when they pop up, especially in the audiobooks imo.  He dropped some gems in there

this, the Aiel "Life is a dream" chant, and all of the battle songs we hear around Mat are my faves : )

The 'broth and meat' comparison also suggests that even when bonding is an option, humans simply provide more benefits to the spren half of the bond so they would be preferred in general.

perhaps it's got something in the same vein as spren more often bonding someone of the opposite gender?

if spren and singers are more alike than spren and humans, it may be that they get more from a bond with an entity further removed from them?

By attatching both sets of fabrials to large blocks, so that the total weight of each System is 100 Kg, and assuming the weight of System 3 is less than that of System 2 will result in the following

    1. System 1 will drop 1 meter and because it is exerting ~166 Kg of upwards force on System 2, System 2 will be brought up 5 meters
    2. Upon the disconjoining of gems A and a System 2 will drop 4 meters, and System 3 will move 4 meters
    3. Upon the conjoining of gems B and b both Systems 1 and 2 will have the same effective weight, however since System 2 has momentum behind it it will fall 1 meter raising System 1 by 1 meter.

How did you get that for Step 1?  If (1) and (2) are each 100 kg now, (2) should only move .25m for every 1m (1) moves if A and a are linked, it shouldn't move further.

    Quote

    However we can do more

First we mount fabrails on the top and bottom of System's 1 and 2, capable of both attracting and reppelling air. When a System falls the fabrial on the bottom will repel air, enableing both systems to fall in a vacuum. And the Fabrial on the top will attract air, making the system experience greater pressure than it otherwise would. When raising the effect will be reversed, creating a vaccum above the system, and increasing pressure bellow it.

This seems reasonable, stockpile stormlight and get mechanical energy out of it.  I wonder what the optimal way to do that is

so strictly by raising and lowering the gemstones, we shouldn't be able to cheese the system in any way.  idk if it's been mentioned in the thread, but setting something up to rack and rerack the dun and lit sphere's automatically for highstorms could be cool application of something like this - toss your duns in a bin that send them to some apparatus like that, all powered by spheres from that same storm.  or anything else that does utilize that juicy free energy XD

  12. Two things to get out of the way first.  One - we have no proper unit (outside of monetary terms) for gemstones, so i will use simply that when describing their size, a unit.  Two - im going to be viewing all motion as discrete and ignoring acceleration; as Nameless has already pointed out, acceleration already does enough to mess with things, so I'll poke some new holes without it if I can

So, here is my understanding of paired Rubies / Amethysts.  Lets say I have two identical 100kg cubes with a rubies set inside a face of each, a 1 unit ruby in one (block 1) and a 4 unit ruby in another (block 2).  the weight of the rubies is negligible in this case, given the sizes of he blocks.  what this means is that if i push on block 1 with 200 N of force, block 1 will receive 40 N of it, and block 2 160 N, a 1:4 split.  This encompasses two important facts - the weight of the full system is the full weight of both sides, and the gemstone sizing, relative to its pair, controls the division of forces.  If im wrong here, pls lmk

Lets break down the current process so it's easier to talk about:

    We have systems (1) [A+B], (2) [a+b+C], and (3) [c]

We begin at rest, with systems (1), (2), and (3), at rest at position 0

    1. WITH A:a (1) falls 1m, (2) rises 5m in response (5 to 1)
    2. WITH C:c (2) falls 4m, (3) rises 4m in response (1 to 1)
    3. WITH B:b (2) falls 1m, (1) rises 1m in response (1 to 1)

Now, (1) and (2) are back at 0, and our output (3) is 4m higher than it was when it started!  Free energy!

The problem with the current Frustration Apparatus is it ignores mass when convenient, only looking at the relationship between the currently conjoined gems as opposed to relationship between the currently joined systems.  Consider the mass / size of the parts of the system in relative to the whole.  Each of these gems has mass, which must be accounted for.  If we use A and a, let a weight 1 unit and A 5.  Assuming a = b = c, and assuming our systems are ONLY the mentioned gems at these given masses and no additional weights, our systems weigh 6, 3, and 1 units respectively.  With the weight accounted for (and initially pulley motions not adjusted [ie drop (2) 4m]), the process looks like.

    1. WITH A:a (1) falls 1m, (2) rises 2m in response (6 to 3)
    2. WITH C:c (2) falls 4m, (3) rises 12m in response (3 to 1)
    3. WITH B:b (2) falls 1m, (1) rises .5m in response (3 to 6)

This obeys conservation of momentum, with the sum total energy of the three systems at 0, the starting value, at every point in time.  This is where additional arguments can be made about acceleration as well - my example is also idealized, moving discretely from one potential energy state to another while ignoring acceleration / deceleration - but those arguments are in the same direction im shooting.

Perhaps with some arrangement of gem sizes and system weights the device could be used for efficient energy storage and recovery, optimizing how amounts of it get moved around or such

I'm not super happy with this, feeling like I'm forgetting something poignant, but will look over it again after work!

I know there's one Child who kidnapped Perrin and Egwene in Book one after they met Elaidas but I can't remember his name.

I know there's one who is in charge of them all. Book 3 prologue was from his POV and he's plotting something but I can't remember. I know that Padan Fain is with him trying to manipulate things under a different name.

I think Padan Fains alias is Moredeeth?

I know there's a Child who is secretly a Dark Friend and hates Perrin. That was revealed in the Book 3 prologue when a half man talked to him

I know there's a guy who died on Almoths Plain at the end of Book 2 and his son is trying to avenge him. I think his name is Bornhold?

I dont really get what their goal is? Are they just killing anyone they think is against the Light? What is the Commander scheming?

Glad to hear you're enjoying WoT! The audiobooks rock - we get to correct people on pronunciation, they get us on spelling XD

Geofram Bornhald is a Lord Capitan of the Children (one rank below the highest rank, Lord Capitan Commander, currently Pedron Niall).  He and his party capture and hold Perrin and Egwene in book one.  He is, as you correctly guessed, the Capitan who got absolutely smashed on Toman Head.  His son, Dain, is now driven against Perrin.

Yup!  Thats an alias of Fains

You'll soon learn that a lot of the Children have very different ideas on what it means to keep people walking in the light, if you will.  The purpose of the organization is stopping Darkfriends and evil, but something something about a few bad eggs can spoil the bunch

    1. As I said before, there was no Dalinar POV during that moment, as we see it only through Moash and Ash PoV. We can't say he did not feel it or he did with certainty. And then we skip year in-between books so to have that kind of conversation between Dalinar and SF after a year would be weird.

    2. Ishar seems to have bigger connection with Dalinar as he is Bondsmith and Gavilar not, Ishar even said it that. Ishar would have to most likely establish connection with Gavilar by touching him.

    3. SF was fully aware when Odium hijacked the vision, he was literally pushed away from it. Ishar probably would not have to do it by brute strength but still starting and ending visions by request would be something that SF could sense, and he would be aware of Gavilar talking to someone in his visions, even if he could not sense that person. We also knew that Gavilar's visions are the same as Dalinar's so they must come from SF. SF completely ignoring all that weirdness is a stretch. Also with Lift, he noticed her as soon as Dalinar did, so it suggest the same would happen when Gavilar would be talking to someone else in the visions.

    5. He categorically refused to bond with Dalinar and few seconds later agree to it. Abandoning lie is much lesser deal than bonding and risking life.

    1. I know there was no Dalinar PoV.  The fact that there wasn't, and the fact that we never hear about it from him or SF, just seems absurd to me if SF can actually sense the deaths.  And no, it would not be weird - wouldn't you like to know why the sliver of god you're bonded to started screaming in agony?  I know SF is not exactly forthcoming with Dalinar, but c'mon, that's a pretty weird thing to keep quiet about (both in terms of in-character decisions and Brandon decisions).

2&3.  Fair points, but we still have a lot to learn about Bondsmithing stuff - I don't think Ishy pulling the wool over SF's eyes is out of the question

    5. Just bc Gavilar told him whatever about Dalinar at the end and the SF started sending the visions to Dalinar after does not mean the two are immediate cause/effect - i would not call that obeying him

  15. 29 minutes ago, Frustration said:

I have but I'll repeat myself.

    1. Heralds cannot sense each other suffer non-permenant death. Kalak was still alive but none of the others Ishar included could tell he was alive. To say otherwise is to directly contradict the books. The only other individuals who could possibly tell if a Herald died are the fused(Highly unlikely) Which could not be there as they were bound to Braize, Odium, who can barely connect to people with the Everstorm, and does not have the guile, nor the personality to pull this off, Culitvation, who acts nothing like the Stormfather in the prologue, and Honor, who died and his cognitive shadow fused with the Stormfather.
    2. Ishar did not have his blade at this time. The Unmade only recently appeared in Shinovar per Taravangian, and disreguarding that his experiments with spren only started a few months before RoW. So him hijacking the Visions is out of the question.
    3. The Stormfather would definatly have noticed someone hijacking the visions, so him doing nothing about it is weird. Additionally Whoever Gavilar is speaking to has the ability to bring people into the visions, and end them on command. The only being we know with the power to do that is the Stormfather.
    4. The Stormfather shows the ability to see the future, something Ishar definatly cannot do. But we know the Stormfather can due to his comments to Kaladin before Szeth attacked in WoR.
    5. The Stormfather obeyed Gavilar, something Ishar would never do.
    6. How would Ishar have even formed a Connection with Gavilar without touching him? And how would he maintain it? Every other time a Bondsmith has used Connection it has been temporary, why is this the exception?

    1. In the same vein, if this is the Stormfather proper, we must assume he can sense the deaths of heralds. Why did he not freak when Jez died?  The absence of that from the books is a big reason i'm team faker, as if SF can sense them it would seem extremely disingenuous to not bring it up. Spoiler > Quote to manage length

    Spoiler

It’s not about what you are saying. That is not what is wrong.

    “But—”

Suddenly, the Stormfather wavered. Lightning pulsed through his shimmering form, lighting Gavilar’s room with an electric glow. Blue frost on the rugs, pure light reflecting in the glass of the balcony doors.

Then, the Stormfather cried out. A sound like a peal of thunder, agonized.

“What?” Gavilar said, backing up. “What happened?”

A Herald... A Herald has died... No. I am not ready... The Oathpact... No. They mustn’t see. They mustn’t know...

This does not seem like something whoever it is had control over / was aware of and ready for.  If this is Stormfather, i simply cannot rectify his lack of reaction to Jez's death / Dalinar's awareness of the SF bugging out.

    2. Perhaps there is a connection with Gav that he does not have with Dalinar.  We've got 6 books to go

    3. In your search for absolute proof, how can you say for sure SF would have noticed his visions being hijacked?  Can you tell me exactly how the magic works so in that he would be made aware?  If there is a reason for which I am not aware, lmk

    4. Not sure what part in particular you are referring to, but working theory is Gav is still speaking to SF at points, so this is moot

    5. Would he really abandon a lie he willingly went into for pride?  No

    6. IDFK, we no next to nothing about connection compared to its existing mechanics (in my belief).

Well let's examine the first premise of the Stormfaker theory, that the Stormfather in the prologue isn't the real Stromfather. Do you have any concrete evidence for it?

please consider again that it is The Stormfaker Theory, not The Stormfaker Identity Confirmed!  Its a theory, there is no concrete evidence, but evidence can simply point in a certain direction without being damning.

as well - forgive me for speaking for the entire Stormfaker camp, but I think we are fully aware that, yes, this may just be the Stormfather, but there are a lot of things that are readily explained by someone interfering .

Not really, I find theories are best made by taking the evidence and building up to a conclusion, rather than the other way around. I don't feel there is enough evidence for us to even say that it isn't the Stormfather, much less who an impersonater could be

i disagree that this post and the previous stormfaker discussions have been built in reverse as you say. there is evidence, a damn lot of it as one can see from tekno's summary; how heavily you weigh that evidence and its proposed explanations is a matter of personal opinion, but given certain views it is not farfetched to reach the conclusion that there is a potential interloper when everything is looked at together. if it looks like a stormfaker, swims like a stormfaker, and quacks like a stormfaker, there is probably some merit to the stormfaker theory

also, in this particular case, i don't think it is at all strange to make assumptions without a ton of definitive evidence - the Stormfather is off in this prologue man

  18. Firmly with you on team Stormfaker, tekno, glad to see that the momentum for the theory is still going strong in some!  Def going to comb over all your gathered details (which, thank you for doing so so neatly!) and see if I can't find something new later tn.
