    Hello and welcome!

    I'm curious about this game design bit...I've been doing some solo development myself, a little on Unity, and a lot on Roblox. I've got a game I'm hoping to release in late August.  So tell me more! What's your experience like, where does your genius lie...?:P

    Sazed as the Hero of Ages could be greater than an ordinary Shard because he is the vessel of TWO reunited Shards. But in a way he is still naive. At least as far as I know he doesn't understand the Cosmere as well as Preservation or Ruin might have. But then again I'm still fairly early to the Cosmere.

    So it's grey but yeah I get it now.

    Yeah I know, you're right, but I thought it was funny anyway. I thought of this during the 'Fungeon' scene where Felix tries to break the cell bars with his hammer, only to thicken them, and exclaim, "Why do I fix everything I touch!" It just reminded me of how they are polar opposites in that way, and how Felix cannot destroy, while Ralph tends to do so unintentionally all the time. So yeah, it's not perfect, but close enough to make me laugh a little.^_^
    That said, I do think Preservation probably could strengthen or improve something if it meant preserving it, similar to how Ruin can create with the intent of destroying. So maybe the cell bar thing still makes sense. And in any case, Felix can't create so much as restore, which isn't quite the same a preserving but yeah.

    Ha lucky, none of my family cares at all to read them^_^ I knew someone who had read most of them, but they moved away.

    I tried to get some of my friends to read some...I got one to read The Final Empire, but that was it. So now I geek out in my room alone when I should probably be sleeping.

    Gotcha, I thought the two novellas were adjacent. I'll probably save them for after Era 2 anyway, I still have Warbreaker, SA 2 & 3, Threnody, and Elantris to entertain me once I'm done with Hero of Ages.:blink::lol:

    Oh, can a shard still be picked up after the Vessel has been killed? I thought that killing the Vessel shattered the shard and rendered it--but not the Shardworld or previously established investiture systems--sterile and unusable. But I guess not?

    I know I'm really getting into material for books I haven't read yet, but that's okay at a minor level.

    Makes sense. But things like when Vin drawing power directly from the mists would no longer be possible if Preservation was shattered, correct? Since that is feeding off of the Shardbearer's power itself.

I've only read a couple books (tWoK is the only SA book I've read thus far) so I'm a little early still, but can someone help me understand why Honor's magic system is still intact if he is dead? Like, what happens when a shard is shattered? Does it still sort of function but is unable to be picked up?

    I'm okay with a couple spoilers theory-wise, but if you are unable to answer this question without giving plot spoilers just say so, I can just read and find out like everyone else:P

    I thought this had to do with the energy being consumed by the phase change from the liquid in the cartridge to the gas that is released...but it would still make sense I think that a gas becoming less concentrated would consume heat as well, just to a much smaller degree (unless the Stormlight is really concentrated when stored, which, come to think of it, it probably is).

    So yes, I think this makes sense. Now I want to hear what Sanderson has to say about this, because his response to the question about frosting sounds like there might be more to it.

    Maybe along with light the Stormlight radiates heat energy...? Which must be overruled by the use of heat when the Stormlight is used and thus depressurized.

    Either way I think chill from use of a pristine, radiant magical energy source that can be stored in gemstones and changes the fabric of multiple realms is pretty epic. Honor's magic system is very elegant.

    Shardblades form water droplets because the apparent chill condenses water vapor. This chill (I think) could either come from investiture (innate investiture??) or from the spren. Either way it probably has something to do with the spren bond, which I honestly am yet to read much about. But the fact that both the blade and the droplets remain solid and liquid rather than returning to a gas indicates that something is maintaining the chill AND/OR something is buffing the pressure. My guess, again, is spren or investiture (since we decided investiture is a third essence like matter or energy, and I wouldn't be surprised if spren somehow had control over phases.)

    But...Adhesion??? I've only read WoK, but I don't remember if frost forms when Kaladin uses Windrunner Surgebinding, so if not then maybe the frost has to do with the Honorblade being the source of Szeth's Windrunner abilities...

    The part I highlighted in green reminds me of the inexplicable lack of heat that should have been emitted from the deposition, so either Brandon needs to refresh his knowledge of phase changing or he is being remarkably clever in implementing this disappearing of energy. Also Brandon not wanting to talk about Szeth's frost yet might have to do with the unknown fourth law of 'Investodynamics'.

    Okay (I'm totally improvising this response, so it's all over the place), so now I'm thinking that this probably has to do with Investiture, considering that we don't fully understand it yet.

    My house is too noisy to think up a solid conclusion...I'll come back later to see if anyone can help me straiten things out or point out if I missed anything.

     

    P.S. I just found confirmation that investiture is a third essence in the universe

    Awesomesauce, this is all perfectly plausible and it's always fun to geek out ^_^ But I personally think that Calderis is right in saying that Stormlight is Honor's Investiture manifested in the physical realm, so it isn't actually matter or energy. Investiture is it's own essence.

  14. It's been a very long time...I sorely miss the Cosmere. I've been kept busy, and I haven't even had time to read. In the past it's been my escape, and I seldom have a chance to even pick up a good book for a few moments anymore. I've had to pause my progress on Hero of Ages, and I really miss reading in general, but especially Sanderson. But that's all good and fine, I'm prioritizing, and I hope to find more time to read this summer.

    So, partially because I want to remain active on the Shard, but also genuinely to ask a question I'm posting this.

    Once I finally finish Hero of Ages, I'm planning to read Warbreaker before I continue on to Words of Radiance. I can figure out a decent order, however I'd like some advice on where to fit in Shadows for Silence--I know it's a short read, so maybe that'd be good for when I am still busy. I know Threnody is a less significant shardworld, so I was wondering if anyone had input on where to fit it in with my (slow) Cosmere reading.

    Thanks for keeping the Shard alive, I'm looking forward to Binge Reading again when I get the chance:P and hopefully I can keep up with the Cosmere better next year, since I've actually only gotten to a couple books as of yet.

  15. In hindsight, I realize that the concept of Stormlight probably isn't all that different from, per say, Atium. They both are pure forms of Investiture fueled by the magic system of a Shard (or two Shards), one as a gas and one as a solid. Yes, I'm truly satisfied with the conclusion that Investiture--and the forms it takes--is a unique type of concept/aspect of the universe unlike matter or energy.

    I'll probably be keeping this in mind as I continue to explore more Shard's magic systems.

    A liquid for of it would be super concentrated, more so than a solid one. 

    Investiture has its own rules. Energy and matter don't behave the same ways, and neither does it. 

    I really really appreciate this post, thank you for the input! I feel like this makes the most sense. Investiture may be non-baryonic matter or some sort of non-traditional energy, but it is most likely a third group of entity. And any liquid form, as you have said, would not be condensed Stormlight gas, but more accurately Investiture simply in the form of liquid.

  17. I sort of doubt it's possible...I am yet to read Warbreaker, but there seems to be some sort of tie between Endowment and Honor. From the few things I've heard, the magic systems are similar. Shardblades--as far as I know--are part of Honor's magic system. But I really can't say much, I don't know how flexible Shard's magic systems are, and I'm still reasonably new to the Cosmere, so I'm no expert. But I think the forging of Shardblades--just as the Snapping of a Misting--probably can only happen under the proper magic systems.

Stormlight could be held for only a short time, a few minutes at most. It leaked away, the human body too porous a container. He had heard that the Voidbringers could hold it in perfectly. But, then, did they even exist? His punishment declared that they didn't. His honor demanded that they did."

    Yeah, so to be fair I really doubt it decays, but I do like the way you all think.

    I really don't know what to say about the placement on the Periodic Table. It honestly seems more probable that it is some sort of molecule. Unless there is an element that doesn't exist in the Cosmere, and is replaced by Stormlight. Probably not an organic element. Maybe something in group 18? Those are mostly unreactive gasses, right? Maybe neon or something. I don't know.

    I doubt Investiture is in the electromagnetic spectrum, because waves of Investiture just doesn't sound right. It's more of an essence. Or it could be a particle...some sort of mutant electron that only holds significance in the Cosmere. But no, I doubt that. I'll bet Investiture is either beyond baryonic consideration or simply...magic. This is a 'magic system' after all.
