  1. "Witches have their ways," Ivian replied, "and this one especially. The Raveness does not draw power from any number of potions or victims but by the fear of the people at her mercy; while she lives, the name lives. And I'll not have that name in my kingdom any longer."
  2. "That I must applaud and respect, but the fact remains that she is a threat to this kingdom and its people. As such she must be removed."
  3. A realization--a suspicion, really--came over Ivian, followed by an unprecedented fear. This wasn't supposed to happen. "I sent the Raveness to your home to disentangle her sins from this kingdom," Ivian said, voice forceably controlled. "What was it that happened while she was there?"
  4. "Irreplaceable?" Ivian shook his head. "What requirement could that witch fulfil? Don't tell me that she's sold herself to the soldiers as a toy."
  5. "You needn't keep up the facade any longer, Caden. I can imprison her and let the kingdom forget the Raveness entirely."
  6. "What I mean is that you no longer have to keep the woman as such. We can begone with her entirely."
  7. "Yes, of course... but also to let her die," Ivian replied. "The Raveness, anyways; not necessarily Thadel. The name of the King's Lady Torturess needed to be slowly forgotten by this kingdom--and with the Spring coming back, I think our work in that regard is done."
  8. Ivian returned to his regular posture. "You know why I assigned her to you in the first place, yes?"
  9. "In that case, it will no longer be necessary for your 'marriage' with the ex-Raveness."
  10. "Very well. You will be headed East, then, by the time the grasses return?"
  11. "The Ladies, of course, will be deployed." Ivian nodded. "However, I would wish to be more reserved with their contributions."
  12. Ivian laced his fingers together. "I've been working towards that end, general, and I believe it may be the turning point in our favor. While your guard and armies are formidable, the combined militias of all the noble houses are... lucrative. Nigh impossibly so. And I think that it may be possible to reign them under our--indirect, at least--command."
  13. "We would have to split our forces, lest our eastern borders are left undefended."
  14. "Of course." Ivian nodded. "But the north and east still remain."
  15. "If it's aggression they want, then it's aggression they'll get. If they fight back we'll push farther."
  16. "Weakness?" Part of Ivian truly did want to bring together the armies of Mendahar and march through the north and south. A carnal lust for power--one he could never truly quench--showed him the prospect of an empire. He pressed his knuckles to the table, incapable of pushing away the subconscious desire to rule everything. The other kingdoms were fractured, frail; a pushover for the now-unified armies of Mendahar. He could march through without mercy, showing the true strength of his kingdom. But was it weakness to find solace? Was it weakness to reserve himself? An old memory weaved its way into his mind: when he was first named king. He remembered his soldiers marching against the Baudelaire estate, and the very general who stood before him moving to destroy the old church without question. They were unflitching, unhesitant, relentless. Rebels, as Ivian had called them, were to be quelled. But now his messengers negotiated his terms to the family, and he longed defend his lands rather than expand them. Still, though... the other kingdoms remained. "We needn't conquer our enemies, Caden. We need merely send a message." He slid his fingers to the borders of Mendahar. "Conquer the lands nearest to us. The people will keep their lands and farms; we will, too, grant asylum to those without. Those we conquer will become our citizens." He tapped the map again. "Hopefully that will be enough."
  17. "I would have preferred diplomacy, of course, but that has never been a very... realistic option." Ivian tapped his map. "I am unsure of which option would be most optimal."

  19. "It's just a few minutes from here." Schevin said, hailing a innercab.
  20. "I did, Praetorium." Ivian replied. "To discuss our kingdom's situation, considering that Spring is nearly upon us."
